An Xin Ya sat there in silence, not saying a word. She stared straight ahead; the weather in this late autumn was getting colder. A gust of chilly wind blew by, causing the yellow leaves on the trees to fall, leaving only bare branches. She couldn't help but sneeze and wrapped her arms around herself, feeling a bit chilly.
Thinking of Wian, she felt how unfortunate she was. At such a young age, she had to endure such a serious illness, spending most of her childhood in the hospital. Suddenly, An Xin Ya felt very fortunate; at least her childhood was spent in an orphanage, alongside classmates and friends, as well as teachers. After six years, her Foster Parents took her home, giving her a happy and complete family where she could feel the warmth and love of a home.
The nurse, worried that she might catch a cold, came over and leaned down to say to her, "Let's go back!"
An Xin Ya nodded and, with the nurse's assistance, walked back into the hospital. They took the elevator up to the seventh floor of the medical research center and returned to her hospital room to lie down.
Shouya had been busy with An Xin Ya's eye restoration experiments lately and could only spare a little time to accompany her. In the two or three days leading up to the surgery, An Xin Ya often requested to walk around or sit in the courtyard downstairs. When Shouya didn't have time, he would instruct the nurses to take care of her.
"Sister Anxi, I see you!"
A sweet and youthful voice echoed from down the hospital corridor, gradually getting closer.
An Xin Ya couldn't help but smile brightly at Wian, who ran over and tightly hugged her leg. Looking up at her, Wian said, "Sister Anxi, I caught you! Can I touch your hair?"
"Of course!" An Xin Ya squatted down and moved her long black hair aside.
Wian's soft little hands gently stroked her hair as she exclaimed enviously, "So beautiful! Sister Anxi, your hair is not only pretty but you are beautiful too."
This made An Xin Ya laugh as she placed her hands on Wian's delicate shoulders and smiled, saying, "Little rascal, when did you become so smooth-talking?"
"I'm not wrong! You're beautiful! Your eyes are also nice; if only you could see them! Then you could see me too."
Hearing Wian's words made An Xin Ya's heart tremble slightly. Yes, how much she wanted to see this little girl in front of her, how much she wanted to see Brother Shouya and Grandma Wushuang and Yezi...
"In a few days, I'm going to have surgery," An Xin Ya said. She counted down the days until the surgery every day with anxiety and fear.
No matter what happened, she had to be strong. Compared to her, Wian was much stronger. She believed that she would get better and was confident that she would grow long black shiny hair like hers.
The next day, Shouya was still busy with experiments while An Xin Ya was assisted by a nurse to go downstairs to the courtyard. Wian was playing soccer there; upon seeing Sister Anxi arrive, she hugged the ball and ran over with a bright smile saying, "Sister Anxi, let's play a game today! Let's play blindfold tag..."
"Alright! Sister Anxi can't see, so there's no need to cover her eyes with a cloth."
They began playing tag on the open grass.
"Sister Anxi, I'm over here... come and catch me!"
"Don't run, I'll catch you in a moment, just don't run!"
An Xin Ya perked up her ears, carefully listening to Wian's movements, but she was clever and moved lightly, making it hard for her to hear any sounds.
"Sister Anxi, I'm right here, come on! Hehe!" Wian was hiding behind Nurse, poking her head out and giggling, then looking at Nurse and putting her finger to her lips to signal her to be quiet.
"Vian, where are you? Come out! If I catch you, you're done for!" An Xin Ya could only hear the sound of someone sneaking around but wasn't sure which direction it was coming from.
At that moment, Shouya, wearing a white coat, walked out of the hospital. As he was heading this way, a nurse stopped him to ask for his signature on a patient's report. He quickly signed his name and strode over.
"Sister Anxi, you'll never catch me..." Wian stuck her tongue out from behind Nurse.
"I will definitely catch you." An Xin Ya said loudly. Being sharp, she held her breath and listened carefully for the footsteps approaching; Wian must be nearby and couldn't be too far away.
Shouya approached with his hands in the pockets of his white coat, smiling as he watched her and Wian playing. Not long ago, she had mentioned Wian to him, saying how much she liked little Wei An. He knew all about Wian's condition: at six years old, she was diagnosed with leukemia and had undergone several rounds of chemotherapy, but her condition remained unstable and surgery was still needed.
When Wian saw the handsome doctor coming over, she mischievously ran behind him and shouted loudly, "Sister Anxi, I'm over here! Come catch me!"
"Don't run; I will definitely catch you." Following the sound, An Xin Ya slowly walked over step by step. Suddenly, she stumbled into someone's embrace with a thud. Strong arms wrapped around her, and she caught a faint scent of jasmine from that person along with a familiar breathing sound.
"Brother Shouya, is that you?" An Xin Ya asked with wide eyes.
"Yes!" Shouya looked at her gently as if his eyes were filled with water and replied softly.
"Sister Anxi, you still didn't catch me, but you caught a handsome uncle instead," Wian said with a giggle as she watched the two of them.
An Xin Ya reached out her hand and gently stroked the head of Wian, who was wearing a hat. Then she squatted down and said softly, "You little rascal, you made it hard for me to catch you, but now I've got you."
"That's not fair, Sister Anxi, you're cheating," Wian pouted.
Shouya smiled as he watched An Xin Ya and Wian. Recently, Xinya had been much happier and often seen smiling.
Later, Wian was taken back to the hospital by her nurse. An Xin Ya stood quietly there, listening to Wian's footsteps fade away. Shouya approached her, adjusted her outer garment, and then helped her back to the hospital, whispering in her ear that it was cold outside and she should come out less to avoid catching a cold.
Shouya looked at her, unsure if she had taken his words to heart. She indeed hadn’t; on the third day before her surgery, she surprisingly asked the nurse to take her to see Wian. The nurse had no choice but to take her downstairs to the hospital and into Wian's ward.
"Sister Anxi, you're here!" Wian exclaimed as she lay in bed receiving an IV drip, unable to move with a tube inserted in her nose. It was said that she had been playing outside too much these past few days and caught a cold, causing her cells to start spreading.
Hearing Wian's weak voice made An Xin Ya's heart ache. With the nurse's assistance, she walked over and sat by Wian's bedside, taking her soft little hand in hers.
"Sister Anxi, I caught a cold and can't play games with you anymore. The nurse is putting a needle in my hand; it hurts so much!" Wian said.
"My Wian is the strongest, isn't she? You need to listen to the doctor and the nurse; if you do that, you'll get better and can play games with me again," An Xin Ya said gently.
"Mm!" Wian nodded.
An Xin Ya stayed in Wian's ward for a while before leaving and returning to her own room. She overheard the nurse saying that Wian needed surgery this time, but it came with risks due to her young age and weak body. After several rounds of chemotherapy and now another surgery, there was always a danger to her life.
She leaned quietly against the hospital bed, thinking of Wian, and tears began to fall uncontrollably.
This scene was witnessed by Shouya as he walked in. He hurried over with a worried expression and asked anxiously, "Xinya, what's wrong? Why are you crying?"
An Xin Ya didn’t tell him why she was crying. Instead, she tightly hugged Shouya and cried in his arms. She truly hoped that through the second surgery, her eyes would be successful so she could see again; this way, she could meet Wian one last time.
That night, Shouya took An Xin Ya into his room. He had been busy with experiments lately and had neglected her feelings and hadn’t listened to what was on her mind.
Smelling a familiar scent, An Xin Ya realized this was his private suite. It was here that they had developed their relationship and intimacy. Thinking about this made her cheeks flush slightly as she felt somewhat at a loss.
Shouya sat beside her, wrapped his arms around her, and talked to her about many things, asking if she wanted to go to the Netherlands. Did she want to see what Amsterdam, Rotterdam, and The Hague were like?
Did she want to go to Thailand, where there were mangoes, Chiang Mai, and Pattaya? Did she want to experience the romance of Windmill Country?
Did she want to enjoy the beauty and comfort of the azure sea and silver sands? Did she want to visit Northern Country and witness the beauty of cherry blossoms there?
An Xin Ya leaned against his shoulder, quietly listening to his voice, picturing the landscapes of these countries in her mind. Cherry blossoms—she seemed to remember Wushuang mentioning that there were vast fields of flowers there, so beautiful.
Shouya gently whispered in her ear, "Once your eye injury heals, I will definitely take you to the Netherlands, Thailand, Northern Country, and China..."
An Xin Ya smiled sweetly with happiness, nodding her head and softly saying "mm."
Shouya helped her up, looking at her with gentle eyes. Under the light, her fair skin showed a hint of rosy blush. She lowered her head as he kissed her lips and then said, "I’m going to take a shower first!"
After working all day in the lab, Shouya felt a bit tired. He had a smell of medicine on him and worried that An Xin Ya might not be able to stand it.
An Xin Ya nodded and sat quietly on the sofa, listening as Shouya walked into the bathroom. Soon after, the sound of running water filled the air.
An Xin Ya stood up and gently touched every piece of furniture around her. When she reached the bed, it felt soft and comfortable. The memory of their intimate moment flashed in her mind; although she couldn't see it or visualize their entangled forms, the sensations in her body brought a wonderful feeling—like soaring into the sky with joy.
She lay down on the bed, closed her eyes, and was enveloped by a faint scent of jasmine from the blanket. Perhaps she was too tired; before she knew it, she had fallen asleep.
