I turned around and quickly walked to Li Na's side, asking urgently, "What’s going on?"
Li Na's expression was serious as she handed me a report. "The fibers found on the victim's fingers are identical to the light yellow fibers discovered at the scenes of previous cases."
My heart sank, a chill rushing from my feet to the top of my head. This meant our speculation was correct; this case was indeed committed by the same killer as in the earlier incidents!
"Damn it!" I slammed my fist against the wall, producing a muffled thud.
"Captain Chen, what should we do now?" Li Na looked at me, her eyes filled with concern.
"The killer is very cunning," I forced myself to calm down, analyzing the current situation. "He is extremely careful with each crime, leaving almost no direct evidence. But this time, he deliberately left a fiber behind, which indicates..."
I paused deliberately, watching Li Na's reaction.
"What does it indicate?" Li Na pressed, her brows furrowed.
I took a deep breath and slowly said, "It indicates he is provoking us!"
Li Na was momentarily stunned, her beautiful face filled with surprise.
"He is intentionally guiding us, wanting to play a cat-and-mouse game with us!" I said emphatically, anger flickering in my eyes.
"What should we do then?" Li Na asked worriedly. "Are we just going to let him lead us around?"
I pondered for a moment, a bold idea flashing through my mind: "No, we need to turn the tables!"
"Turn the tables?" Li Na looked at me in confusion.
"Exactly!" A glint of determination shone in my eyes. "We will follow his lead and deliberately release false information to lure him in!"
Li Na looked at me with a hint of understanding in her eyes. "I see. I'll arrange it right away."
With that, Li Na turned and left to start preparing for the next steps of our plan.
Killer, do you think you've already won?
We'll see about that!
I took a deep drag from my cigarette and extinguished it in the ashtray. The white smoke slowly rose before my eyes, blurring my vision and seemingly obscuring the chaotic thoughts in my mind.
"Notify all major media outlets," I said firmly to Li Na, "and tell them we found the murder weapon in the abandoned building in the south of the city; the killer is likely hiding nearby."
Li Na paused slightly before understanding my intention, a look of appreciation flashing in her eyes. "Got it, I'll take care of it."
The news quickly spread, and as expected, the media swarmed in like sharks sensing blood, surrounding the police station so tightly that not even a drop could escape.
I stood by the window in my office, watching the flashing lights below, a cold smile creeping onto my face. "The murderer, you really can't keep your cool..." I murmured to myself, a glint of coldness flashing in my eyes.
Two days later, late at night, the police station was quiet, with only the light in the duty room still on. I sat in my office holding a case file but couldn't focus on a single word.
"Knock knock knock..."
The sound of knocking broke the silence. I looked up as Li Na pushed the door open and walked in.
"How's it going?" I set down the file and stood up to ask.
"Everything is ready," Li Na said softly. "The Technical Team has installed surveillance cameras and infrared alarms around the Evidence Room. As soon as the murderer appears, he will be immediately detected."
I nodded and walked to the wall, opening a map of Jiangcheng. Pointing to the location of the Abandoned Building in the south of the city, I said, "I've arranged for police forces to be deployed around here. Once we spot any trace of the murderer, we will act immediately."
Li Na came over to my side and looked at the map, her brows slightly furrowed. "But will the murderer really fall for it?"
"He will," I replied firmly. "He thinks he's incredibly clever and enjoys playing with the police like puppets. This time, I will make him pay for his actions!"
Time ticked by slowly, and the air felt as if it had solidified, eerily silent. Suddenly, a sharp phone ring shattered the stillness.
"This is Chen Ge!" I grabbed the phone with urgency in my voice.
" Captain Chen, the alarm in the Evidence Room has been triggered!" A panicked voice came from the other end.
"I understand. I'm on my way!" I hung up, quickly grabbed my coat, and turned to Li Na. "Let's go!"
We rushed to the Evidence Room, where two officers stood at the door with tense expressions.
"What’s going on inside?" I asked urgently.
"Report to Captain Chen: When we arrived, we found that the lock had been broken, but the murderer has already escaped," one officer replied.
I pushed open the door to the Evidence Room and was hit by a damp, musty smell.
The Evidence Room was in disarray; papers were scattered everywhere, and cabinets containing evidence had been pried open with their contents thrown about chaotically.
"Damn it! He got away!" I slammed my fist on the table with a dull thud.
Li Na walked over and picked up a photograph from the ground. The photo depicted a young and beautiful woman, who was unmistakably the victim of this case. "What did he take?" Li Na asked, her gaze fixed on the photograph. I looked around, my eyes finally landing on the Evidence Locker.
