I turned to Li Na, and noticed her face was a bit pale, her eyes revealing a hint of unease.
"What's wrong?" I asked.
"Look!" Li Na pointed at the bag of fruit on the table, her voice trembling as she said, "That fruit bag... it's yellow!"
A jolt ran through me as I quickly walked over to the table and picked up the bag of fruit. There, prominently printed on the bag, was a yellow cartoon design—a monkey wearing yellow gloves!
"Damn it! We've fallen into a trap!" I angrily threw the fruit onto the ground and slammed my fist on the table, creating a loud noise.
"He has been watching us in secret, taking advantage of our negligence to set a trap for us!" I gritted my teeth, filled with regret and self-blame for being so careless.
Li Na's face was pale as she tightly grasped my arm, her eyes filled with fear and worry. "What... what should we do now?"
"It's too late to talk about that now; we must find that girl as soon as possible, or it will be too late!" I took a deep breath, forcing myself to calm down. Now was not the time for self-recrimination; we needed to think of a way to make up for our mistakes quickly.
I picked up my phone and quickly dialed a number.
"Hello, Director Wang, this is Chen Ge. We need support; the killer may have moved the hostage..." My tone was urgent, speaking rapidly as if I wanted to spill all the information at once.
While I spoke on the phone, Li Na and I rushed out of the room, running towards the door. We had to race against time and couldn't afford to waste another second!
In the dimly lit hallway, our hurried footsteps echoed like a tense prelude to this battle against evil...
"The Technical Team has news; they performed facial recognition on the photos and confirmed the girl's identity," Mr. Zhang's voice came through the phone with an unusually grave tone. "Worse yet, we've traced her address; the killer may have already targeted her!"
"What?!" My pupils constricted suddenly, my heart feeling as if it were gripped tightly by an invisible hand, a chill spreading throughout my body in an instant.
"Give me the address!" I nearly shouted this out, my voice hoarse from tension.
"12 Southern Old Street, Chen Ge. You must be careful; the killer is very cunning. We are mobilizing police forces; you must hold on and not act impulsively..." Before Mr. Zhang could finish his sentence, I hung up the phone, flung open the car door, and shouted at Li Na beside me: "Get in the car!"
Li Na seemed to realize the seriousness of the situation as well; without asking further questions, she quickly sat in the passenger seat.
I slammed on the gas pedal, and the police car roared like an arrow released from its bow, speeding down the streets shrouded in night.
Southern Old Street was located on the outskirts of the city; the streets were narrow, houses old and dilapidated, with dim streetlights casting an eerie atmosphere everywhere.
The police car screeched to a halt in front of building 12. I pushed open the car door and dashed into the hallway.
"Bang! Bang! Bang!"
I knocked forcefully on the girl's front door but received no response—only my own rapid heartbeat echoed in the silent hallway.
"What should we do? Will it...?" Li Na's voice trembled slightly, her face filled with worry.
"It's too late!" I decided instantly and kicked the door with all my strength.
With a loud bang, the old wooden door couldn't withstand the force and shattered, a strong smell of blood rushing towards me.
My heart sank suddenly, an ominous premonition rising within me as I rushed into the room.
The room was in disarray, furniture scattered on the floor, splatters of blood on the walls, and a nauseating smell of blood filled the air, yet there was no sign of the girl.
