"Sir, you are awake?"
A strange voice came from above. Zhang Yun struggled to turn his head and saw a man in black standing beside him, his face covered by a black mask, revealing only a pair of sharp eyes.
"Who are you..." Zhang Yun wanted to ask but found his throat extremely dry, unable to make any sound.
The man in black seemed to notice his predicament and took a water pouch from his waist, handing it to him. "Please drink some water, sir."
Zhang Yun took the pouch and gulped down several mouthfuls, feeling much more comfortable in his throat. Only then did he carefully observe his surroundings, realizing he was in a cave, the entrance concealed by dense branches, making it very hidden.
"Where is this? How did I end up here?" Zhang Yun looked at the man in black and asked in confusion.
The man in black remained silent for a moment before slowly speaking. "This is deep within Taihang Mountain. You were gravely injured, and Subordinate saved you."
"Taihang Mountain?" Zhang Yun was taken aback. "How did I end up here? Who sent you?"
"Subordinate was ordered by His Majesty to secretly protect you," the man in black said, lowering his head respectfully.
"His Majesty?" Zhang Yun was even more puzzled. "His Majesty issued an edict to eliminate the rebels. I was carrying out orders; why would he send someone to protect me?"
The man in black hesitated for a moment, as if weighing something. "You may not know, but Li Gonggong is treacherous and cunning. He appears loyal on the surface but harbors ill intentions, aiming to usurp the throne. His Majesty has long sensed his wolfish ambitions but has been unable to find evidence and has thus remained silent."
"What?!" Zhang Yun was shocked. "Li Gonggong actually has such ambitions?! Then why doesn't His Majesty..."
"Your Majesty has your own difficulties; there is no need for you to ask further," the man in black interrupted him. "I saved you this time on the orders of Your Majesty, to inform you of Li Gonggong's conspiracy."
"Li Gonggong's conspiracy?" Zhang Yun gritted his teeth against the pain in his body and sat up straight. "What does he intend to do?"
"Li Gonggong has secretly gathered a group of court officials and bribed the Imperial Guard Commander. He plans to launch a coup during Your Majesty's heavenly sacrifice, using the emperor to command the lords and seize control of the court!" The man in black spoke heavily.
"How outrageous!" Zhang Yun was furious. He struggled to stand but winced as it pulled at his wound, stifling a groan. "Rest assured, Li Gonggong's conspiracy will not succeed!" The man in black supported him and said solemnly, "Your Majesty has already made secret arrangements. Once Li Gonggong reveals his true intentions, he will be captured all at once!"
"Your Majesty is wise!" A glimmer of hope flashed in Zhang Yun's eyes. "What should I do?"
"To cover his tracks, Li Gonggong will certainly claim that you have been killed, so you cannot show yourself for now," the man in black said. "During this time, you should rest here and wait for news from Your Majesty."
Zhang Yun nodded; he understood that all he could do now was wait. He looked at the mysterious man in black before him, filled with gratitude.
"Thank you for saving my life; may I ask your name?"
The man in black shook his head. "I am merely following orders and do not dare take credit; it is best if you do not inquire about my name."
Zhang Yun wanted to ask more, but the man in black had already turned and walked toward the cave entrance. He glanced back at Zhang Yun and said solemnly, "Take care!"
With that, he vanished into the dense forest, leaving Zhang Yun alone in the empty cave, lingering over the shocking news brought by the man in black.
