Wang Zhan got into an accident and fractured his right leg, needing someone to take care of him. My mom urged me to come over, and Wang Zhan's Mother also insisted I come. The two of them seemed more anxious than the person involved.
"Jiang Wan, Wang Zhan is your neighbor and older brother. He was so good to you when you were little, and now he's in trouble. Don't you think you should go take care of him?" My mom advised me earnestly.
I lowered my head and said nothing. Just a few days ago, I had vowed that I would no longer entangle myself with him. And now I was going to slap myself in the face? Besides, didn't he have a girlfriend?
"Where's his girlfriend?"
"What girlfriend?" My mom looked at me in surprise. "Wang Zhan's Mother said he doesn't have a girlfriend."
I froze, my mind in a jumble. How could Wang Zhan's Mother not know whether he had a girlfriend? Could it be... Wang Zhan lied to me? A thousand thoughts flashed through my mind, and in the end, I could only brace myself and go to the hospital to find him.
I cooked seafood porridge and brought it to the hospital. Wang Zhan was leaning on the bed reading a book. When he heard the noise, he looked up at me. Our eyes met. He seemed to have anticipated my arrival and was not surprised at all. Instead, he looked somewhat disappointed: "So it really is you."
I felt a bit awkward; just a few days ago, I had made strong remarks, and now I was here to take care of him. My mom held my hand and chatted with Wang Zhan's Mother.
"Xiao Zhan, our family Jiang Wan is worried about you and insisted that I bring her over to take a look."
"I heard you don't have a girlfriend. How about considering our Jiang Wan?"
Wang Zhan glanced at me lightly and said, "Is that so?"
"Jiang Wan, do you want to?"
My mom was nodding furiously beside me, signaling me to agree quickly.
Wang Zhan's mother looked at me with anticipation as if marrying Wang Zhan would solve his lifelong issues.
I took a deep breath, about to speak when Wang Zhan scoffed, "Forget it, she doesn't like me."
I sighed in relief; thankfully, he didn't agree. Otherwise, I really wouldn't know how to face him.
Wang Zhan's mother frowned and said, "Xiao Zhan, you and Jiang Wan grew up together; you know each other well. What's wrong with that?"
"You've known each other for so many years; there's a foundation of feelings, so it should be easier to get along."
My mom nodded vigorously.
Wang Zhan lowered his gaze, and there seemed to be a hint of sadness in his eyes: "Jiang Wan told me she doesn't like me."
"She even said before not to bother her."
Wang Zhan's mother frowned again: "Did you do something to make Jiang Wan angry?"
My mom tugged at my arm: "Jiang Wan, do you have any misunderstandings about Xiao Zhan?"
I shook my head and handed the seafood porridge to Wang Zhan: "You haven't eaten yet, right? I made some porridge for you."
"Try it and see if it suits your taste."
Wang Zhan took the porridge and had a sip, then calmly said, "You bought this outside, didn't you?"
I was taken aback. "How did you know?"
"You never prepare ingredients in advance."
Wang Zhan's words made my face flush instantly. Indeed, every time I went to his house to cook, I would prepare the ingredients beforehand and cook for him on the spot. I rarely prepared ingredients just for him.
"I came in a hurry this time, so I didn't prepare in advance."
I lowered my head, feeling a bit embarrassed.
Wang Zhan chuckled lightly. "Hmm."
"Give it a try and see if it suits your taste."
Wang Zhan leisurely finished the porridge, and just as he set down the bowl, there was a knock at the door of the hospital room.
Marin stood at the door wearing a fitted denim skirt. She was holding a thermos.
That fitted skirt reminded me of a long time ago when I bought a similar one for myself—the one that Wang Zhan disliked.
I instinctively glanced at Wang Zhan. His expression showed no change. It wasn't that the skirt looked bad; it was just that the person wearing it was different now.
