Liu Liuwen nodded, tears silently streaming down her face. She stepped aside to let Lin Feng into the room, where the curtains were drawn, casting a dim light that filled the space with a heavy atmosphere.
"Where's Keke?" Lin Feng looked around but did not see his daughter's figure.
"She... is playing at a friend's house." Liu Liuwen lowered her head, unable to meet Lin Feng's gaze.
Lin Feng walked to the window and pulled back the heavy curtains. Sunlight instantly flooded the room, illuminating Liu Liuwen's pale face.
"You've lost weight." Lin Feng's voice was soft, yet it struck Liu Liuwen's heart like a heavy blow.
"Why... why did you come to find me?" Liu Liuwen's voice trembled slightly. She dared not hope that Lin Feng would forgive her; she only wanted to know what he intended to do now.
Lin Feng turned to look at Liu Liuwen, his expression complex. "I just wanted to ask you, why?"
"I..." Liu Liuwen opened her mouth but found no words. The vanity, greed, and loneliness that had consumed her felt utterly powerless in this moment; she could not find any excuse for her past betrayal.
"Do you know that Keke thinks about you every day? She asks me when you'll come home." There was a hint of choked emotion in Lin Feng's voice as he crouched down and took out a drawing from his pocket, handing it to Liu Liuwen. "This is what she drew yesterday. She said she hopes our family of three can always be together."
Liu Liuwen took the drawing, and tears flowed freely once more. In the picture, the three of them held hands under the sunlight, their faces beaming with happiness—a life she had once desperately longed for but had destroyed with her own hands.
"Li Wen, I know you still have feelings for me and for Keke. Our family still has a chance to start over, okay?" Lin Feng held Liu Liuwen's hand, his gaze sincere and earnest.
Liu Liuwen looked at Lin Feng, her heart filled with struggle. She loved Lin Feng and also loved Keke, but could the mistakes she made really be forgiven? Did she truly have the courage to start over?
Silence spread between them. Outside, the traffic flowed and the noise continued, while inside the room, only two battered hearts remained, drawing close yet hurting each other.
Ultimately, Liu Liuwen withdrew her hand. She dared not look into Lin Feng's eyes, her voice low and hoarse: "I'm sorry, Lin Feng, I..."
Before she could finish her sentence, a rapid knocking on the door interrupted her.
"Ms. Liu, Chen Qiang has been taken away by the police for suspected economic crimes. Please come with us to assist in the investigation," said a serious-sounding officer in uniform from outside the door.
Liu Liuwen's face instantly turned pale. She slumped helplessly onto the sofa, covering her face with her hands as tears streamed through her fingers.
Lin Feng watched this scene unfold before him, feeling a mix of emotions. He knew that all of this was Chen Qiang's own doing, but as an accomplice, Liu Liuwen would also have to pay for her actions.
He walked over to Liu Liuwen and gently patted her shoulder, his tone calm yet firm: "Go ahead and cooperate with the police investigation; strive for leniency. I will take good care of Keke, so don't worry."
Liu Liuwen lifted her head, looking at Lin Feng with tear-filled eyes. Her lips moved slightly, but in the end, she said nothing. She stood up and followed the police out of the room, leaving behind a lonely silhouette.
Lin Feng watched Liu Liuwen leave, his heart filled with helplessness and sadness. He knew their story was not over yet, but what the future held was anyone's guess.
He turned and walked out of the room. The sun still shone brightly outside, but in his heart, it felt as if a shadow had descended that he could not shake off.
