"It’s only seven in the morning; it’s quite impolite to call someone this early."
"I promise you, I will definitely call him in the afternoon, so don’t worry."
Shu Ran confidently assured, but… by the afternoon, she had completely forgotten.
This phenomenon is known in psychology as selective amnesia.
After a busy day, Shu Ran took the subway and made her way home after a long journey.
As she approached the entrance of her community, she noticed a gray Mercedes parked by the roadside that looked somewhat familiar.
She wondered suspiciously if the owner of the car could be Qin Xian.
However, she quickly dismissed this thought. First, she hadn’t called Qin Xian, and second, Qin Xian seemed to have been busy all day and hadn’t contacted her either.
So it must just be a coincidence.
Yet, she couldn’t shake off a strange premonition that lingered until she stood at her front door.
Upon opening the door, a rich aroma of meat wafted toward her. She took a deep breath and couldn’t help but smile broadly, calling out into the house, "Mom, did you make Sweet and Sour Ribs?"
Before waiting for a response, she changed into her slippers and hurried toward the kitchen.
Halfway there, she caught sight of a plate of her favorite Sweet and Sour Ribs shining brightly on the dining table. Her eyes lit up instantly, and she didn’t want to move another step.
She blinked and glanced at Shu Mother, who was busy in the kitchen. Ignoring everyone else, she walked straight to the dining table and stealthily picked up a piece of rib, popping it into her mouth for a bite.
"Um..." The sweet and sour flavor spread in her mouth as Shu Ran squinted her eyes in satisfaction.
Just as she was about to take another bite, a light laugh suddenly reached her ears.
Shu Ran, biting into the rib, turned her head in confusion, and nearly choked.
Who could tell her where Qin Xian, standing beside her with a teasing look as he watched her sneak a bite of the ribs, had come from!!!
Startled, Shu Ran's hand shook, causing the rib to slip from her grasp. It rolled slickly across the smooth table surface a few times before falling off completely, finally coming to rest beside Qin Xian's shiny shoes.
Shu Ran had never felt so embarrassed and ashamed as she did at that moment; her face turned bright red, wishing she could find a hole to hide in.
Looking at her silly expression, Qin Xian laughed heartily and teased, "Little glutton."
He had been silently sitting on the sofa since she entered. He watched with great interest as she rushed into the kitchen, then stopped halfway to sneakily eat the ribs with a mischievous look.
It was just too cute.
Thinking back on it made Qin Xian's smile grow even wider.
"What are you two doing standing there?" Shu Mother happened to come out carrying dishes. "Sit down."
In the midst of her embarrassment, seeing Shu Mother felt like seeing a savior. She hurried over and said, "Mom, let me help you."
Seeing her like this, Shu Mother thought she was just shy and teased her, "You’re already a couple; why are you still so shy? How will that work in the future?"
Shu Ran took the dishes from her hands, smiling foolishly as she tried to brush it off.
After serving the dishes, Shu Mother returned to the kitchen to serve soup. Shu Ran was about to follow her but was stopped by Shu Mother, who said, "You don't need to help here. Qin Xian is here for the first time; go chat with him and make sure he doesn't feel bored."
Shu Ran had no choice but to step back and slowly walked over to him, inviting him to sit in the living room.
As soon as they sat down, Shu Ran asked a question she was eager to know the answer to.
"How did you end up here?"
She hadn't called Qin Xian, so how did he know that her mother invited him for dinner tonight?
Could it be that her mother ran into him while taking out the trash?
No way.
While she was pondering this, Qin Xian provided the answer: "Auntie called me in the morning and asked me to come over for dinner tonight."
???
That couldn't be possible; how would her mother have Qin Xian's number?
Wait! Her mother does have it!
She remembered that her mother had sent her Qin Xian's contact information when she was trying to set them up on a blind date.
It was right there with Qin Xian's phone number.
What a slip-up...
Qin Xian raised an eyebrow, "What, you don't want me to come?"
His words pierced through her thoughts, but how could Shu Ran answer with certainty? She could only laugh awkwardly, "No, no, I'm actually happy you came."
It wasn't that she didn't want him there; since Shu Ran had promised not to leave, it meant she had accepted him.
She just wasn't used to the fact that they had only been peacefully coexisting for two days before meeting the parents.
Wasn't this progress a bit... fast?
However, now that they had already met, there was no need for her to be shy anymore.
Shu Mother prepared a large table full of dishes, including Shu Ran's favorite Sweet and Sour Ribs, fried shrimp balls, corn and carrot chicken soup, and more. In the center of the table was a braised crucian carp, colorful and fragrant, which was one of her signature dishes.
"Qin Xian, come, try your auntie's cooking," Shu Mother said as she picked a piece of fish and handed it to Qin Xian. Seeing him humbly accept it and then praise it wholeheartedly made Shu Mother feel a great sense of satisfaction and increased her appreciation for him.
However, this person who was so favored by her mother was currently undergoing a thorough 360-degree interrogation from her.
"Qin Xian, what business are you in? Are you busy?"
"It's okay; I've been busy acquiring a securities company recently."
"Acquiring? Your company must be quite large then."
"Yeah, it's doing alright."
Meanwhile, Shu Ran, happily gnawing on ribs beside them, couldn't help but want to correct the inaccuracies in their conversation.
Their company is not just doing well; it should be considered very large.
Not to mention S City, even other cities are basically covered under his industry.
Such achievements, and he actually thinks it's just okay.
The gap in values is quite significant...
Shu Ran was quietly thinking when Shu Mother spoke again.
"Shu Ran, she sometimes is just too introverted. She tends to keep everything to herself and doesn't like to express it. So Qin Xian, when you are with her, take care of her and be understanding. If you can, help her out a bit..."
"Mom—"
Before she could finish her sentence, Shu Ran interrupted.
How could she not interrupt? She felt like her mom was treating her like a patient, talking about helping her out.
Come on, as long as Qin Naive doesn't upset her, that's enough.
