He turned his head and glanced indifferently, but that glance left him frozen in place.
The girl walking towards him was dressed in a beige casual sports outfit. Her fine, straight, soft long hair was tied up in a high ponytail, cascading down in a graceful arc.
Her features were clear and ethereal, her aura pure and clean.
As familiar as ever, she made him lose his focus once again.
He had just been thinking of her, and now she appeared right before his eyes.
Is this what they mean by "longing brings echoes"?
The person who occupied his thoughts, at the moment he was staring intently at her, her gaze also circled around and finally landed on him.
"Senior." Upon seeing him, Shu Ran clearly paused for a moment, taking a few seconds to greet him, her voice tinged with surprise.
"Shu Ran, long time no see." Xu Yan Ying appeared quite natural, taking the initiative to chat with her. "How have you been lately?"
Shu Ran nodded. "Not bad, and you?"
"Just the same," Xu Yan Ying replied with a wry smile.
His recent life could not simply be summed up as good or bad.
Shu Ran smiled awkwardly, suddenly at a loss for words, unsure of what to say next.
Yet inside, she felt an inexplicable tightness and discomfort.
In life, there are no chances to meet as if for the first time.
Many relationships, once there is a gap, cannot return to how they were before.
Just like him and her.
Once upon a time, their conversations were endless, and the atmosphere between the two was always relaxed and pressure-free.
But now?
They sat in silence, unsure of how to start.
In this dull and awkward atmosphere, Li Xin could tell at a glance that their relationship was anything but ordinary.
Curious, Li Xin couldn't help but lower her voice to ask, "Shu Ran, do you know him?"
"Yeah, he was my senior in college."
"Oh." With that answer, the flames of curiosity in Li Xin were doused halfway.
A senior... I thought he was an ex-boyfriend.
Eventually, it was Shu Ran who broke the silence. "What brings you here?"
Shu Ran slightly raised her eyebrows and glanced at the place behind him, which happened to be Lu Qisheng's residence.
Why is he here?
Xu Yan Ying didn't answer but countered with a question of her own. "I was just about to ask why you two are here."
Shu Ran pondered for a moment and decided to share. "I have a colleague who has been on leave for several days. We heard she had an accident recently, so we came to check on her. But we couldn't find her... instead, we ran into you..."
Xu Yan Ying squinted her eyes, playfully picking apart her words and feigning anger as she asked, "What? Are you disappointed to see me?"
Shu Ran quickly waved her hands in denial. "No, that's not what I meant."
"I'm just teasing you." Xu Yan Ying smiled mischievously.
This little joke eased the current atmosphere slightly, making the awkwardness feel less forced.
After laughing, he seriously asked her, "What is the name of the person you are looking for?"
"Lu Qisheng."
As soon as the words fell, Xu Yan Ying's expression, which had just shown a hint of joy, suddenly froze in that moment.
Seeing his suddenly serious expression, Shu Ran furrowed her brows in confusion and asked, "What's wrong, Senior?"
"This is a long story. If you don't mind, let's find a place to sit down and rest. I'll explain it to you slowly," Xu Yan Ying said as he leisurely walked forward and closed the door to Lu Qisheng's house behind him.
Li Xin exchanged glances with Shu Ran, both of them filled with suspicion and curiosity.
Why was Xu Yan Ying here? And why did he have the key to the Lu Family? What was his relationship with Lu Qisheng? Had something happened to Lu Qisheng?
These questions swirled in their minds, waiting for him to answer.
...
Qin Family.
After finishing a meeting, Lina hurried to the top floor to deliver lunch to the esteemed President Qin.
As soon as she exited the elevator, she noticed that the door to the general office was not closed.
From within the office came a faintly melodious and soothing piano piece, gently and slowly drifting into her ears.
Qin Xian was lazily leaning against a solid-colored leather sofa. With half-closed eyes and a calm expression, he seemed to be dozing off.
That strikingly beautiful face, usually so aggressive, softened slightly in this comfortable and relaxed atmosphere.
Lina stood hesitantly at the door with the lunch box in hand, unsure whether to disturb this picture of a handsome man resting.
"Come in."
At some point, Qin Xian had opened his eyes. Sitting upright, he appeared slightly fatigued.
He gently propped himself up on his elbows, his long fingers resting on his forehead, lightly pressing against his temples.
His gaze, however, coldly scrutinized her from top to bottom, finally landing on the three-tiered insulated lunch box she was holding.
He subtly furrowed his brows, feeling an inexplicable annoyance.
Ever since the incident with Qin Xinyi, he had lost interest in cooking.
As a result, his appetite had significantly decreased lately; he would only take a bite or two before losing interest in food altogether.
Lina placed the lunch box on the table in front of him, wordlessly and skillfully opening the compartments.
Just as she was halfway through, a cold male voice interrupted her, “Leave it. You can go now.”
Lina immediately halted her actions and obediently replied, “Yes.”
After saying that, she walked to the door and habitually closed it behind her.
A sudden thought crossed her mind: when did President Qin start listening to music? And soft instrumental music at that.
She could hardly believe it.
And why did Qin Xian suddenly start listening to light music? It certainly wasn’t for the sake of creating a pleasant atmosphere or calming his mind.
It was simply because he discovered three music apps on Shu Ran's phone while playing with it in the morning.
This was quite surprising for Qin Xian.
Her phone didn’t have a plethora of games or social media apps like Cao Yun’s. It didn’t have a bunch of photo editing apps like Lina’s; it only had three music players and some daily utility apps.
Curiously, he opened one and found that all the music she had collected were piano pieces and light melodies.
He quietly accepted everything, wanting to hear what kind of music she listened to.
Sure enough, just like her personality, it felt refreshing and comfortable.
Suddenly, he missed her a lot; he wanted to see her, to hold her, to breathe in her sweet fragrance.
Shu Ran was incredulously listening to Xu Yan Ying recounting the entire story.
According to him, Lu Qisheng's father had died, not by suicide but by homicide.
The murderer was a wealthy second-generation heir.
Lu Qisheng was forced to assist the murderer, being coerced by this rich heir to help him kill his own biological father.
After the deed was done, Lu Qisheng was taken away by this murderer; whether he was alive or dead remains unknown.
The police had been pursuing them relentlessly.
Xu Yan Ying, as a lawyer, naturally felt compelled to help the unfortunate victim's family seek justice. She accepted their commission so that they could be reunited.
However, this wealthy heir used his power and influence to suppress them at every turn, preventing them from seeking justice for the deceased.
