Listening to her voice, the restless unease and turbulent anger within him gradually began to calm down. His blood slowly warmed, and he breathed steadily, with her in his ears, in his heart, and filling his mind.
Shu Ran happily spoke halfway through her thoughts when she noticed he had fallen silent. Biting her lip, she mustered the courage to ask, "What's wrong today? Are you unhappy?"
From the very first sentence he uttered, Shu Ran sensed something was off. His voice was cold and unfamiliar, completely unlike the gentle tone he usually used with her.
Moreover, whenever Shu Ran spoke to him, she could hear a strong wind on the other end of the line, howling loudly, and there seemed to be faint sounds of snowflakes drifting.
She wondered where he could possibly be that the wind was so loud; it couldn't possibly be at the office.
He had left early in the morning and had been gone for almost twelve hours now.
Earlier that morning, when Shu Ran saw Chen Jin talking to Qin Xian in the dining room, she noticed a change in Qin Xian's expression; it looked somewhat unpleasant.
However, when Qin Xian sat down to eat with her, his mood seemed to return to normal, smiling gently, so Shu Ran didn't dare to ask.
She didn't understand him.
There were some things she didn't inquire about, but she still had an inkling deep down.
When she asked A-Chang what kind of person Qin Xian was, she already had a rough answer in her heart.
In such a large company, Qin Xian had to support it; how much hidden power was behind him? How much pressure did he have to bear? How many skills did he need to possess?
She knew nothing about it.
They said he was the hope of the entire family; how many expectations did that word "hope" carry?
She didn't know that either.
Shu Ran told herself that if he wanted to tell her these things, he would.
But originally, seeing him unhappy and troubled, she felt completely clueless about what to do.
It was false to say she wasn't disappointed.
Sometimes she felt that he had accompanied her through so many difficulties, being her support, her armor, protecting her.
And what about her? She couldn't do anything for him. Sometimes she even ended up causing trouble for him.
At times, she felt quite insecure and guilty.
Sometimes she even thought negatively, wondering if Qin Xian would be happier if he had met someone like Zhou Jiajia instead of her. Would his burdens be lighter?
He wouldn't have to worry about her well-being all the time or be concerned about her health.
She was too negative, always completely denying herself.
This point, even she herself didn't realize.
Qin Xian initially wanted to say it was nothing, but hearing her cautious voice softened his heart. He ultimately didn't want to dismiss her concern and patiently said to her, "There's something difficult to handle at the moment, but it's okay; it's almost resolved."
Such a response was already satisfactory for Shu Ran. At least he was willing to share some words with her rather than just brush her off with a couple of dismissive words while silently bearing everything himself; that was enough.
"Shu Ran, hurry up! We're leaving."
Shu Ran wanted to say more to him, but her colleague was already urging her. Reluctantly, she had to hang up and said, "My colleague is calling me. I have to go eat now."
"Don't be unhappy; everything will work out in the end. Come home early tonight; I'll be waiting for you at home. That's it, bye-bye."
"Okay." Qin Xian smiled lightly and then hung up the phone.
As soon as the words were spoken, Li Xin came over, playfully linking arms and teasing, "Who were you on the phone with? Your boyfriend? Look at you, all flushed! What sweet and romantic things did he say to make you so shy?"
Shu Ran instinctively touched her face; it was indeed a bit warm on both sides, but how could she possibly admit it? She hurriedly covered up, saying, "It's just the cold weather that made me red, not blushing."
Li Xin was not convinced at all and mockingly retorted, "Oh~ I don't believe you."
The two continued their banter while walking. Shu Ran kept trying to explain, but Li Xin remained skeptical, tearing apart her explanations.
They were having a great time chatting. Lu Qisheng stood by the car, hearing Li Xin's incessant chatter from afar. Shu Ran was helplessly listening to her talk, occasionally rebutting a point, but most of the time it was Li Xin doing all the talking.
Chirping like a hundred little birds.
Lu Qisheng became curious about what could possibly excite Li Xin so much. She stepped closer and asked curiously, "Hey, what are you two arguing about?"
Seeing Lu Qisheng arrive, Li Xin quickly pulled her in excitedly and said, "Lu Qisheng, I have a little secret to tell you—Shu Ran has a boyfriend now."
"I just saw her on the phone with her boyfriend. I don't know what they were talking about, but I bet it was some inappropriate sweet talk. Look at her, she's so embarrassed her face is all red."
Shu Ran felt utterly helpless; she really didn't understand why she was inexplicably blushing. After all, she hadn't said anything particularly noteworthy to Qin Xian.
Li Xin pressed on, "And when I said she has a boyfriend, she wouldn't even admit it."
Lu Qisheng stood by laughing silently; she simply couldn't imagine what kind of sweet talk the usually aloof Qin Xian would say. Her imagination fell short, and she didn't dare think too much about it for fear of getting goosebumps.
But seeing Shu Ran's innocent expression as she tried to explain while being interrupted by Li Xin's wild speculations made her silently chuckle.
Lu Qisheng couldn't help but want to laugh but still stepped in to defend Shu Ran: "Alright, alright, Xin Xin, don't overthink it. Shu Ran really doesn't have a boyfriend; I promise you."
Hearing someone speak up for her, Shu Ran's eyes lit up as she eagerly nodded and said, "Yes, yes, yes! I really don’t have a boyfriend."
"I only have a husband."
Li Xin looked at Lu Qisheng, then turned her head to glance at Shu Ran, asking with half-belief, "Really?"
"Really," Shu Ran quickly nodded, her eyes filled with sincerity, afraid that she wouldn't believe her.
It wasn't that Shu Ran minded anything; it was just that Li Xin's mouth was simply too...
She feared that if Li Xin found out she was with Qin Xian, it wouldn't take a day for the entire garden, including the parents, to know.
At that point, even if she wanted to keep a low profile, she wouldn't be able to.
Lu Qisheng also nodded, "It's true; she really doesn't have a boyfriend. She only has a husband."
Shu Ran: ??? I thought we agreed she was my good teammate.
Li Xin: !!!!!????
Li Xin suddenly widened her eyes, grabbing Lu Qisheng's shoulder and frantically asking, "Who? Who? Who? Who?"
Shu Ran felt inexplicably nervous, but Lu Qisheng casually mentioned a name, "Eddie Peng."
Li Xin's eye twitched, "Crazy! Then I'm Daniel Wu's wife! Drive, drive, drive! I want to go eat meat."
