Hearing her address, Zhou Yiren wore a friendly smile, but there was a hint of mockery in her eyes as she gently asked, "Can we talk privately?"
Lu Qisheng first glanced at Shu Ran, noticing her worried expression and the way she bit her lip anxiously.
Shu Ran felt completely at a loss; she had never experienced such a situation before.
However, from her perspective, it was best to avoid confrontation. Her aunt was not someone to be trifled with. Having navigated the business world for many years, she was intelligent, capable, resourceful, and skilled in negotiation and profit-making. As a successful and mature woman, facing off against someone like Lu Qisheng, who was just starting out in society, would likely leave Lu Qisheng either severely harmed or stripped of her defenses.
The purpose of her visit today was clear; not only did Shu Ran understand this, but Lu Qisheng likely did too.
Avoiding it might only delay the inevitable.
Moreover, since the other party had come directly to them, could Lu Qisheng really brush it off? She thought that given Lu Qisheng's character, she wouldn't.
Thus, while her thoughts were still racing and the words she wanted to say remained unspoken, Shu Ran heard Lu Qisheng's straightforward agreement: "Okay."
Since she already knew the outcome, the past few months spent with Xin Yi had been the happiest time for her. One should not be greedy but learn to be content; some things are enough to have experienced once.
She had long been prepared for this and had anticipated today; yet still, a wave of bitterness surged within her, making it impossible for her to even smile.
...
All the way there, ever since finding out that Shu Ran's aunt was Lu Qisheng's boyfriend's mother and that she had come to break them up, Li Xin had been chattering non-stop in the car. Shu Ran was so annoyed by her incessant talking that she hurriedly grabbed some snacks from the back seat to stuff in Li Xin's mouth for a moment of peace.
While munching on snacks, Li Xin still felt uneasy. "Hey, do you think your aunt will do something to Lu Qisheng?"
Shu Ran drove in frustration while also trying to make a phone call. The busy signal only added to her agitation, and Li Xin kept asking questions beside her. Shu Ran truly didn't want to respond.
But knowing that Li Xin was worried about Lu Qisheng, she sighed and patiently replied, "Don't worry; she won't."
At most, she would ask Lu Qisheng to leave Qin Xinyi and offer her some money to stay away from S City and never enter his world again. Or perhaps if she were more ruthless and refused to compromise, she might threaten her with those deadly secrets.
Zhou Yiren would not hit her, would not scold her, and certainly would not kill her. The purpose of her visit was likely to subtly or overtly remind her of how lowly her identity was and how filthy her background was, questioning how she could possibly be worthy of Her Son.
She asked her to leave and not to tarnish her son's future. She could offer her another chance at life, as long as she stayed away from her son; she would do nothing else.
Shu Ran knew that she would agree, Lu Qisheng would definitely agree.
Zhou Yiren would not do anything to Lu Qisheng; she was merely advising her to leave. Just this matter alone could lead Lu Qisheng to despair.
Someone who had once seen the sunlight, who had been illuminated by it, how could they live freely again if they returned to the cold shadows?
Li Xin was worried, but seeing Shu Ran flustered finally made her realize something. She kept quiet until Shu Ran drove her home, when she couldn't help but say, "If there are any new developments with Lu Qisheng, remember to let me know."
"Okay."
Shu Ran nodded and slowly drove away.
All the way, Shu Ran kept trying to call Qin Xinyi, but for some reason, no matter how many times she tried, she couldn't get through. She was anxious and feared that if Lu Qisheng really agreed, it would be difficult to reverse the situation.
She hoped that at least Qin Xinyi would know that she had tried to intervene and fight for them; if they still couldn't be together after that, it would be a different matter.
Sighing at this thought, Shu Ran felt both frustrated and heartbroken. Life was already so difficult; finding someone they loved was not easy at all. Why did they have to be torn apart?
When Shu Ran made the seventh call, Qin Xinyi finally picked up. Shu Ran felt exhausted; she had never called someone so many times in a frenzy before.
"Sister-in-law, why are you looking for me so urgently in the middle of the night? Did something happen to my brother?"
Qin Xinyi answered the phone nervously. He had just finished showering and heard his phone ringing incessantly. Thinking something was wrong, he rushed to his bedside and saw that it was his sister-in-law Shu Ran calling him—seven times.
Frightened, Xin Yi thought something had happened to his brother and was about to change clothes to head to the Qin Family when Shu Ran said, "No, your brother is fine; it's Lu Qisheng."
Qin Xinyi paused in his movements; a sudden bad feeling surged in his heart. His expression turned serious as he asked back, "Lu Qisheng? What happened to Lu Qisheng?"
Shu Ran slowly spoke, "Auntie is looking for Lu Qisheng."
"They are at the old coffee shop in the east of the city. You should go check it out."
With a "thud," Shu Ran heard something fall on the other end of the phone, and then the call was abruptly disconnected, leaving no further sound.
Shu Ran sighed, lingering in the empty silence of the road late at night, remaining silent for a long time.
...
"I hope Miss Lu can keep her word; that way, we will all be better off, and Xin Yi won't have to be caught in the middle. Do you think I'm right, Miss Lu?"
For the first time, Lu Qisheng found it difficult to say the word "yes."
She forced a bitter smile and took a sip of her coffee, which was nearly undrinkable due to its overwhelming bitterness, making her eyes well up with tears.
But Zhou Yiren continued to press her, "I also hope this matter can remain confidential, preferably without anyone knowing, including Shu Ran."
She knew that Shu Ran was friends with Lu Qisheng, likely quite close.
However, she didn't want to involve Shu Ran, as if Shu Ran got involved, there was still the significant figure of Qin Xian behind her. At that point, things would likely become much more complicated.
