She busily moved back and forth in the kitchen while he handled his work in the living room. Both were occupied with their tasks, yet they felt an inexplicable warmth in their hearts on this cold winter evening.
When he furrowed his brows and looked up at her busy figure, his heart naturally calmed down.
This once empty home in December now felt alive simply because of her presence, filled with a strong sense of warmth and liveliness.
As she prepared food in the kitchen, she turned to see him working earnestly, and for the first time, she felt a sense of being a wife.
After an unknown amount of time, Qin Xian finally finished all his tasks. The sound of chopping vegetables still echoed from the kitchen. He smiled and stood up, slowly walking into the kitchen.
Shu Ran was carefully slicing lotus root and white radish for the soup when suddenly, her slender waist was embraced from behind. A refreshing male scent enveloped her as someone rested their head gently on her shoulder, their warm breath brushing against her fair neck, causing a slight tickle. Shu Ran lightly struggled and laughed, "Don't mess around; dinner will be ready soon."
Qin Xian buried his head deeper, greedily inhaling the fragrance of her hair. His voice lazily drifted from behind her ear, "I'm not hungry."
Shu Ran smiled, "But I am."
She had slept until dusk and hadn't eaten all day; her stomach was empty, making a soft growling sound.
"What are we eating then?"
"Hot pot! Didn't I tell you?" Shu Ran turned her head with a playful look that held a hint of reproach. "Were you not listening just now?"
How could he possibly have been listening? He was too busy admiring her smile to pay attention to what she was saying.
After cutting the last slice of lotus root and placing it on a plate, Shu Ran turned around to embrace him. She looked up at him with a joyful expression, her tone cheerful and different from usual. "I prepared a lot of delicious dishes and fresh meat. It will definitely taste great when we cook it."
As she spoke, her face radiated with excitement, her eyes sparkling with light, completely devoid of the usual hints of solitude and dullness.
Qin Xian ruffled her hair affectionately and looked at her seriously as he said, "But I think you look more delicious."
Shu Ran's cheeks flushed slightly as she gently swatted his hand away, pretending to be angry. "Go away." Then she laughed and pushed herself out of his embrace, heading towards the hot pot.
During dinner, Qin Xian, ignoring Shu Ran's surprised gaze, took the spoon from her hand. Throughout the meal, he was responsible for cooking while she happily ate beside him. It had been a long time since she felt so joyful and satisfied.
After finishing the meal, Shu Ran washed the dishes while Qin Xian cut fruits to feed her.
But was Qin Xian really that obedient? No, not at all.
While feeding her fruits, he would occasionally kiss her blushing cheeks and play with her hair. He never grew tired of these small gestures. As long as she stood in front of him, Qin Xian wanted to be close to her at all times, relishing it as if he were enchanted.
Only after a long moment of intimacy did he finally let her go, allowing her to wash the dishes properly.
After they finished washing the dishes, they returned to the living room. Qin Xian held her in his arms as they casually watched a variety show on TV, a warm feeling of domestic bliss extending between them.
She nestled in his embrace, warm and comfortable, and suddenly spoke softly, "I once read a passage in a book that went like this."
Qin Xian looked down at her in confusion, not understanding the meaning behind her sudden words.
She smiled gently without explaining further and continued, "The marriage life I envision is like this: two people with their own passions for work, coming home after work to cuddle on the sofa, spending time with children or watching TV together. Cooking together, cleaning together, smiling at each other. Sleeping in each other's arms at night and kissing each other goodbye in the morning before heading off to work. Traveling together, watching movies together, shopping together. Whatever is on their minds would be shared first with each other—simple and clean, like a freshly washed white shirt."
"When I read that passage back then, it felt like I could visualize such scenes in my mind. Honestly, that kind of life is truly beautiful and desirable. At that young age when I loved to fantasize, I thought I must find a big boy who looks great when he smiles and have a sweet romance that feels like being immersed in honey, ultimately stepping into the perfect marriage."
At this point, she suddenly chuckled softly, unsure whether she was laughing at her own innocence or naivety.
"Isn't it naive? Like a story from a fairy tale or a dream. But," her gaze paused for a moment, "I believed it."
Shu Ran was someone who became very persistent once she set her mind on something; put nicely, she had resilience; put harshly, she was stubborn.
"So during my most imaginative years, I experienced my first love—my first romance."
"Imagining it was truly beautiful, but only after experiencing it did I realize how bittersweet it could be; the final outcome was an unhappy parting."
At this point, she paused for a moment, her gaze slowly shifting to the man who had remained calm and silent throughout. His expression was indifferent, his eyes watching her without a hint of emotion.
He knew what she wanted to say.
Unconsciously, his hand brushed against her luscious lips, a dangerous aura seeping through his cool tone as he asked, "Who have you given yourself to here?"
Shu Ran's gaze did not waver in the slightest, her tone resolute. "You. Only you."
To be honest, she had never kissed Wen Yihuan; at most, they had embraced.
Shu Ran looked at him, a mischievous thought suddenly crossing her mind. She deliberately said, "My first kiss was taken by a mysterious man while I was walking home one night."
"Oh?" Qin Xian's memory instantly flickered back; the mysterious man she mentioned seemed to be him.
This answer truly left him unable to feel angry, the corners of his lips slowly curling into a smile.
Shu Ran observed his expression and secretly breathed a sigh of relief.
Finally, she thought, she had managed to clarify things; this matter should be completely over now.
But Shu Ran knew that after saying so much, it was definitely not just to say these things.
