"Knock, knock." The sound of someone tapping on the car window startled the driver, who quickly glanced to the left and saw a disheveled Gu Yan. He hurriedly unlocked the door.
Gu Yan walked to the back, and as the lock clicked open, he pulled the door open and sat in the back seat. As soon as he leaned against the soft seat, Gu Yan closed his eyes, looking somewhat fatigued.
"Sir, what happened?" the driver asked anxiously, turning his head.
Gu Yan appeared to have been running in the rain. Although he had instructed the driver to wait for him at the same spot, the driver still feared being blamed for not picking up Gu Yan on time due to negligence.
Gu Yan remained in a lazy posture, not even opening his eyes. "I ran into a pickpocket on the way back and had my wallet stolen. There wasn't anything valuable inside, but that wallet was a gift from my mother, so I went after him. This is how it ended up."
The driver understood and nodded. "Sir, you could have asked me to check with the police instead of going through all this trouble. Did you manage to find it in the end?"
Gu Yan did not respond.
"Good luck then. Alright, let's head back," the driver said.
He nodded, sensing Gu Yan's lack of interest and wisely kept quiet as he started the car and slowly drove toward home.
The wet clothes clung uncomfortably to Gu Yan's body. Once he arrived home, he headed straight to his room. After taking a hot shower and changing into dry clothes, he felt a bit better.
Once he was cleaned up, he went to his father's study as usual. Gu Yan had not fully taken over his father's business yet; many decisions were still made by his father while he occasionally handled less important meetings, like today.
After every outing, he would return to give his father a routine report.
Gu Yan knocked on the door and waited outside with his hand withdrawn.
After quite some time passed without any response from inside, he decided to push the door open and walk in.
Logically, his father should be in the study; he knew Gu Yan would come looking for him. However, for some unknown reason, the room was empty.
Gu Yan frowned and noticed some documents scattered across the desk with a few pages flipped open.
He did not approach to look closely but inferred from a distance that these were not ordinary business contracts.
His father was a meticulous person; every transaction record was marked with identical file folders. The document before him was clearly different from those around it.

Despite his intense curiosity, Gu Yan restrained himself from going forward to examine it.
Perhaps the key to understanding everything lay here; maybe an opportunity to uncover the truth was right before him.
Yet deep down inside, he felt that something was off.
Based on his understanding of his father, he knew that his father would not rush out without tidying up the desk.
So, Gu Yan quietly sat on the sofa by the bed, expressionless, looking towards the door.
Sure enough, after a while, the door was pushed open, revealing his father's figure behind it.
Gu Yan felt a wave of relief in his heart. If he had gone to check just now, he would have likely been caught after only a few pages, and his disguise would have been in vain.
He immediately stood up and called out, "Father."
His father looked at Gu Yan by the window; a hint of affection appeared on his otherwise emotionless face, and he seemed to relax a bit.
After inviting Gu Yan to sit down, he walked to the desk to organize the scattered documents and locked them away in the drawer.
Once everything was done, he walked back to Gu Yan and gently patted his shoulder as if to encourage him. "You're back?"
"Yes, I'm back."
"You came back a bit late this time. How did it go?" his father asked.
"Everything went smoothly over there. The other party was very polite and hinted at a willingness to cooperate. I negotiated some contract details with him; although the process was somewhat complicated, we ultimately reached a compromise," Gu Yan replied.
"What about other matters?"
Gu Yan couldn't quite grasp what his father was asking, so he decided to respond with the excuse he had prepared earlier.
"Well, something happened on the way back; I almost lost my wallet, which delayed me a bit."
His father nodded. "That should be stable over there; I just wanted you to expand your network and meet some people. But how did you end up losing something afterward?"
"I encountered a pickpocket on the way. Fortunately, I managed to corner him in a small alley, but I couldn't catch him. He ran off while I was picking up my wallet," Gu Yan said, a hint of regret flashing in his eyes as if lamenting letting the thief escape.
"Ah, I see," his father responded calmly, seemingly convinced by the explanation.
He continued to ask about some details of the conversation and offered a few pointers before nodding in satisfaction.
"Although this time went smoothly, many things in business can change rapidly; you need to stay vigilant. There’s still much for you to learn."
"You're right, Father," Gu Yan replied obediently.
Just as his father was about to conclude their conversation, Gu Yan suddenly called out to stop him.
"By the way, there's one more thing."
"Um? What is it?"
"It's nothing, really. August is approaching, and I want to visit my grandfather's old house and pay my respects to him." Gu Yan sighed, revealing a sense of nostalgia. "It's been about ten years since my grandfather passed away. I haven't been back in a long time, so I might as well take this opportunity to go back. Father, what do you think?" He looked at his father with a hint of inquiry.
His father remained silent, appearing somewhat hesitant. He stared intently at Gu Yan, as if trying to discern something from his face, but found nothing; all he saw was deep reminiscence and longing.
"Father, is there something on your mind?" Seeing his father silent, Gu Yan asked in confusion.
Only then did his father snap back to reality. He discreetly composed himself and agreed, "Logically speaking, it is time to go back and take a look. I remember that although you didn't see your grandfather often, you had a close relationship with him. You were the one who sent him off in the end. It's good."
"Yes, that's why I want to take a boat back this time, just like before, as if he were still here."
"Go ahead... go ahead," his father sighed.
It seemed that memories of his deceased father weighed on him; his mood was not very high, but in the end, he still agreed to Gu Yan's request.
With permission granted, Gu Yan immediately began making preparations.
The plan went so smoothly that it was hard to believe. Gu Yan had originally prepared for failure; if his father had not agreed to this excuse, he was ready to wait a while longer to lower his father's guard.
But the outcome was a great success, and he couldn't help but feel lucky.
Convincing his father was not easy; perhaps it was because of the significant meaning his grandfather held for him that it had such an effect, Gu Yan thought.
Regardless, for the next period of time, he could finally pursue what he wanted to do freely.
Of course, it would also be easier to bring that person along with him. He curled his lips into a smile.
