After thinking it over, I decided to wait for him downstairs at his place. I stood at the garage entrance for several hours before finally seeing Xiao Huai's car. He was sitting in the back seat, with a girl resting on his long legs. The girl had the face of an internet celebrity, and they looked very close.
I awkwardly stood in front of the car window and gently tapped on the glass. "Xiao Huai, can I talk to you?"
Xiao Huai looked at me expressionlessly. "If you have something to say, say it here."
I felt like I was going crazy; he actually wanted me to plead in front of others! I nervously fidgeted with my fingers. "Can you come out for a moment?"
Xiao Huai didn't move, but the girl in his arms spoke up first: "Brother Huai, who is she?"
Xiao Huai didn't answer; he just stared at me. "If you have something to say, say it quickly. I'm in a hurry."
I felt a sudden chill run down my spine, as if I had been caught in the act. I steeled myself and spoke up: "Could you please not pursue my responsibility... I didn't mean to make a mistake. I really need this job."
Xiao Huai raised an eyebrow. "Do we have any relationship?"
I froze in place. His meaning was clear; we had no relationship, so why should I ask anything of him? But we had grown up together; how could he say it didn't count as a relationship?
I bitterly forced a smile. "Don't you remember? When we were kids..."
"I forgot all about my childhood." Xiao Huai interrupted me impatiently.
I felt like a deflated balloon, all my confidence disappearing in that moment.
Yes, he has made it big now and has long since looked down on our family. What am I even worth? How could I dare to reach out for connections?
I awkwardly smiled, "Sorry, could you just take me to the company? I'll talk there."
Before Xiao Huai could respond, the girl in his arms laughed first: "So this is one of your company's employees? What an eye-opener."
I felt more like the target of mockery. She scrutinized me from head to toe: "Do you want to see if you're worthy?"
I trembled all over, unsure if it was from the cold or from anger.
"I don't have any money; all my money is with my boyfriend."
The girl laughed even more shamelessly: "So you have a boyfriend, then why are you looking for Brother Huai?"
Xiao Huai glanced at me and suddenly said, "Get in the car."
I was taken aback. The girl in Xiao Huai's arms was also stunned.
"Do I need to ask you nicely?" Xiao Huai spoke again.
I couldn't believe it; Xiao Huai was asking me to get in the car!
I didn't dare hesitate and quickly opened the door and sat down. The driver in the front seat stole a glance at me, his eyes filled with curiosity.
I was extremely embarrassed, keeping my head down and not daring to look at him. The partition in the back slowly lowered, separating the front and back seats. I felt like I was sitting on pins and needles, my whole body tense.
"What does Xiao Huai mean?" What did he want? I cautiously turned my head and found him looking down at his phone, not paying attention to me. The car had the heater on, but I still felt cold.
I carefully spoke up, "Xiao Huai, I really didn't mean to. Can you not hold this against me?"
Xiao Huai didn't look up and replied lightly, "Don't you have a boyfriend? Just have him give you money."
I lowered my head, feeling as small as an ugly duckling. "He controls all my money."
Finally, Xiao Huai looked up at me, a teasing smile in his eyes. I felt so embarrassed that I wanted to find a hole to hide in.
Xiao Huai let out a soft scoff, "You really are obedient." I clenched my fists tightly on my knees, not daring to make a sound.
Xiao Huai instructed the driver to start driving. I had no idea where he was taking me, and I felt a bit scared. Gathering my courage, I asked, "Xiao Huai, where are you taking me?"
Xiao Huai looked at me as if I were prey.
"Are you scared?"
My voice trembled with nervousness.
"I'm... I'm sorry. It was my fault that day. I shouldn't have provoked you."
