"That day?" Xiao Huai sneered, "Which day are you referring to?"
I was so embarrassed that I couldn't say a word.
Xiao Huai continued to press:
"Is it the day you took the initiative to kiss me and took off my clothes?"
My face turned bright red: "I'm sorry, I really know I was wrong."
Xiao Huai stared at me for a long time before finally looking away coldly:
"When did you and your boyfriend get together?"
I lowered my head and replied softly, "Almost a year."
"Is he good to you?"
"Pretty good."
"In what way?"
I didn't understand why Xiao Huai was asking this, so I could only answer honestly:
"He is very considerate, gentle, and generous with me."
As I spoke, I felt a bit guilty myself.
Ma Jia really treated me well, but our views on spending were quite different.
He believed that money should be saved and not spent recklessly,
so he managed all my salary.
He doesn't smoke or drink and lives very frugally,
not even willing to buy himself new clothes.
But I'm a girl; I like to shop,
and I enjoy making my life a bit more refined.
However, I wouldn't blame him; it's not easy for him to earn money, and saving is the right thing to do.
After hearing what I said, Xiao Huai coldly laughed: "I didn't see that coming."
I was too embarrassed to speak.
Xiao Huai didn't say anything else; he had the driver take me home. When I got out of the car, Xiao Huai didn't even glance at me. I felt frustrated and was about to leave when someone suddenly appeared in front of me.
"Jiang Yue?" Ma Jia looked at me in surprise. "How did you get out of a Bentley?"
I was taken aback and stammered an explanation: "That was... that was my boss's car."
"Your boss? What does your boss want with you?"
"I... I just asked my boss for something." I lowered my head, feeling extremely guilty.
Ma Jia laughed, "What did you ask him for?"
I took a deep breath and mustered the courage to speak: "I got fired by my boss, and I just went to ask him to let me come back."
Ma Jia's smile froze on her face: "So, did you succeed in your request?"
I shook my head: "Probably not."
Ma Jia hesitated before saying: "Actually... being fired isn't such a big deal. You can always find another job."
I nodded: "I know."
"That's good to hear." Ma Jia smiled and patted my shoulder. "Why are you back so early today?"
I awkwardly smiled: "I took a leave of absence from my boss."
"That's good." Ma Jia said with a smile as she walked into the elevator. "I told you, men will always show some leniency."
He seemed very happy, and I didn't know why he was so cheerful.
In the evening, Ma Jia cooked for me in my rental apartment. After dinner, he affectionately kissed my lips and asked, "Jiang Yue, when are we getting married?"
I was taken aback for a moment before replying, "At the end of the year."
"But I think that's too late. I want to marry you sooner."
"…Sure."
Ma Jia looked at me, his expression somewhat troubled. "But the wedding date is already set, and I'm busy with work, so I might not be able to change it."
I nodded. "Then let's stick to the end of the year."
Ma Jia hugged me tightly and said, "Jiang Yue, you're really wonderful."
I forced a smile and didn't say anything. Ma Jia held me for a long time until the sound of rain outside gradually lessened before he finally let go.
He put on his coat and lowered his voice to say, "It's getting late; I should head back now. Remember to close the windows when you go to bed tonight, and check the gas. Call me if you need anything."
I nodded. "Okay."
As Ma Jia left, I secretly sighed in relief. I wondered if I was truly ready for marriage. The rain continued to fall outside, pattering against the window sill. I gazed out the window, unconsciously recalling what had happened that night.
