I wiped away my tears and got up to take a taxi home. As soon as I arrived, I received a call from my mom.
"Yueyue, how's work been lately?"
I bit my lip and replied, "It's been good."
"Then why have you been so busy recently?"
"I..." I hesitated for a moment, "I got demoted."
"What?" My mom's voice suddenly rose significantly, "Why were you demoted?"
I sighed, "It's because I didn't do well."
My mom was silent for a moment: "Don't be upset. I'll go talk to Xiao Huai's mom tomorrow and ask her how she raises her son."
"Mom..." My voice choked, "Please don't go. I'm doing fine now."
"You’re just too stubborn." My mom sighed, "Enough of that. You should rest."
After hanging up, I sat by the roadside and started to cry. My mom was right; I was too stubborn. I couldn't accept living a mediocre life like this. But what could I do? I didn't want to get married or have children, and I didn't want to revolve my life around a husband and kids. I wanted to live my own life and do the work I loved. However, reality had slapped me hard in the face.
I didn't know how long I cried until a familiar pair of leather shoes appeared in my line of sight.
I slowly raised my head and saw Xiao Huai. He frowned at me and asked, "What's wrong?" I stood up and wiped away my tears, saying, "It's nothing." Xiao Huai stared at me for a moment before slowly saying, "Let me take you home."
"No need, I can take a taxi back myself." Xiao Huai didn't say anything further but directly opened the passenger door. I looked at him, feeling a bit hesitant.
"Are you afraid I'll eat you?" Xiao Huai raised an eyebrow. I gritted my teeth and got into the car. After Xiao Huai got in, he turned on the lights inside the car.
I looked at him and asked, "How come you're here?" Xiao Huai was turning the steering wheel as he replied, "Meeting with a client." I nodded and fell silent again.
The car was very quiet, with only the sound of the windshield wipers moving. Suddenly, Xiao Huai spoke up, "Aren't you dissatisfied with your job?"
"Huh?" I was taken aback for a moment.
Xiao Huai continued, "I saw your performance review in the planning department; they don't like you." I forced a smile and said, "I know."
"But this job you're doing now, although tiring, allows you to learn things."
"Really?" I gazed out the window. "But I don't want to do this."
Xiao Huai fell silent again. The car once more sank into silence. After a while, Xiao Huai suddenly pulled over to the side of the road.
I looked at him in confusion and asked, "What's wrong?" Xiao Huai took a mint candy from the glove compartment and handed it to me, saying, "Here, eat this."
I looked at him in surprise.
Xiao Huai met my gaze and said, "I see you've been crying for a long time; your eyes are all swollen."
I took the Mint Candy and popped it into my mouth.
So cool, so icy.
Xiao Huai had changed.
The old him would never have been this gentle.
In the evening, Xiao Huai drove me back to where I was staying.
I asked him to drop me off early; I didn't want anyone to see me being dropped off by him so late.
"Can you manage on your own?" Xiao Huai looked at me.
I nodded, "I can."
Xiao Huai continued to look at me, "Aren't you not living with your boyfriend?"
I paused for a moment, regretting what I had just told him.
"I'm fine; you can go now," I said, turning to leave.
I heard the sound of the car door closing behind me.
When I turned back, I saw Xiao Huai standing there watching me.
I waved at him, "Go back; be careful on the road."
Xiao Huai didn't say anything; he just quietly watched me.
I turned and walked into the neighborhood.
At the entrance of the neighborhood, Xiao Huai's car remained parked in place.
The headlights stayed on until I walked through the entrance of the neighborhood before they finally turned off.
When I got home, I found the lights were on inside.
Standing at the door, I saw Ma Jia mopping the floor in the living room.
I was a bit stunned, "What are you doing here?"
