"Brother Shaojie," Qinglan called as she jogged to catch up with An Shaojie, even though she knew he had never responded to her before. 0

Qinglan followed him until they reached his home, where his family had locked the door tight. 0

An Shaojie paused for a moment. 0

"Brother Shaojie, your father is sick again. My father and the villagers took him to the Town Hospital, and your mother went too. Why don't you come to our house for dinner?" Qinglan looked up at him with an expectant and pleading expression, as if she were the one in trouble and not An Shaojie, begging him to take her in. 0

"Lanlan!" Suddenly, someone called from behind. 0

Qinglan turned around to see Lin Xi with her doll-like hairstyle. 0

"Brother Shaojie, your father is sick. Your mother, my dad, and Lanlan's father all took him to the town hospital. Your sister has been at my house. My mother sent me to tell you to come over for dinner." 0

Lin Xi's voice was sweet and tender, like freshly stir-fried bamboo shoots—fragrant and crisp. She was eager to finish her long string of words, which made her breathless, causing her chubby little body to bounce up and down as she spoke, giving her voice a melodic rise and fall. 0

As she spoke, her bright eyes sparkled as she looked at An Shaojie, afraid he might refuse. 0

Qinglan turned to Lin Xi with a pout, looking both cute and aggrieved. "Lin Sister, I want Brother Shaojie to come to our house for dinner. Our house is closer; yours is so far away. Besides, his sister is at your house. Isn't it better for him to eat at ours?" 0

"Lanlan, my mother said your family has many people. Your father and grandfather often help others in the village, so there isn't enough food for everyone. That's why Brother Shaojie should come to our house for dinner." 0

Qinglan shot Lin Xi an angry glare and turned away sulkily. 0

When Qinglan turned around again, An Shaojie had already followed Lin Xi and walked quite a distance away. 0

Watching their backs, tears fell from Qinglan's eyes for no reason. She stood in place for a long time before dejectedly heading home. 0

After returning home, Qinglan hastily shoveled a few bites of rice, then pushed the bowl and chopsticks to the center of the table, jumped off the stool, and ran outside. She tripped over Liu Jiawei's stool leg, stumbled a bit, and almost fell to the ground. 0

Qinglan grimaced as she rubbed her foot, not caring about the pain, and ran out again. 0

"Crazy girl, where are you going now?" Liu Jiawei asked discontentedly while standing up to make way for Qinglan. 0

Liu Jiawei was Qinglan's older brother, two years her senior. 0

"She must be going to Lin Xi's Home again. That An Shaojie is definitely having dinner at Lin Xi's Home today. Lanlan just loves to hang out with those two, but look at An Shaojie's attitude; he completely ignores Lanlan, yet she always tries to talk to him," Liu Jiawei grumbled as he leaned over his meal. 0

"Eat! There shouldn't be so much talk during mealtime." Liu Dezhou, sitting at the head of the table, tapped his bowl with his chopsticks. 0

Liu Jiawei widened his eyes in protest and shot a glare at his grandfather but dared not say more and continued eating. 0

Around noon, the young men who had taken An Bingwen to the hospital in the morning returned with Lin Wenhui, but Qing Shusheng did not come back. 0

Immediately, many villagers gathered around to ask those young men questions. The young men said little, only shaking their heads silently, and the villagers understood that An Bingwen's condition was not good. 0

"Where is our Qing Shusheng?" Liu Xiuzhen caught Lin Wenhui, who was trying to slip away with his head down. 0
