Before entering the village, Lin Wenhui was worried about running into Liu Xiuzhen, knowing she would bombard him with questions. He initially planned to keep his head down and pretend not to see her, but unexpectedly, she caught him right away.
"Shusheng Brother didn't come back because An Bingwen's condition isn't good; he stayed behind," Lin Wenhui said quickly, eager to slip past Liu Xiuzhen.
But Liu Xiuzhen was not about to let him go. She grabbed his arm again. "He stayed? Why did he have to stay? Why didn't you stay? Why didn't the others stay?" Her tone was somewhat aggressive.
Lin Wenhui scratched his head, feeling cornered by Liu Xiuzhen's questioning, and stammered, "I... I actually wanted to stay with Shusheng Brother, but he said I have class tomorrow morning and insisted I come back with them first." He pointed at the other few people who had returned with him, looking as if he had done something wrong.
Indeed, every time he encountered Liu Xiuzhen, Lin Wenhui felt like a scholar facing soldiers—he had a reason but couldn't articulate it clearly, always feeling guilty.
"You have class? What about them? Do they have class too? Why didn’t they stay?" Liu Xiuzhen pointed at the young men who had returned earlier and raised her voice.
"Some of them wanted to stay too, but either they have elderly family members or young ones that need care," Lin Wenhui explained. Although he was a teacher and usually articulate, when faced with Liu Xiuzhen's outburst, he found himself at a loss for words and couldn't provide a solid justification.
"So what? So he stayed because he has no elderly or young ones to take care of?" Perhaps seeing Lin Wenhui's guilty expression made Liu Xiuzhen feel more justified in her confrontation, and her voice grew louder.
"No, no," Lin Wenhui waved his hands repeatedly. "Sister-in-law, please don't misunderstand; it's not like that. You take care of your family, right? You can handle it; Shusheng Brother can rest assured."
As he spoke, Lin Wenhui exchanged glances with one of the young men who quickly stepped forward to pull Liu Xiuzhen's hand away from Lin Wenhui's arm. "Sister-in-law, sister-in-law, this is how it is."
Taking advantage of the moment while Liu Xiuzhen was listening to the young man's explanation, Lin Wenhui hurriedly slipped away.
By the time Liu Xiuzhen realized what had happened, Lin Wenhui had already walked quite a distance.
"Hey." Liu Xiuzhen called out to Lin Wenhui's back.
Lin Wenhui turned around and waved his hand, saying, "Sister-in-law, let's go home for dinner."
After Lin Wenhui returned home, several young men also went back to their own homes. Liu Xiuzhen stood by the bridge for a moment, greeted others, and then headed home as well.
Just as Liu Xiuzhen's figure disappeared, the group of women who had been watching the scene by the bridge began to chatter among themselves.
"Hmph!" One woman disdainfully let out a scoff from her nose while shaking her head.
"Some things, you can't help but believe; that's just how it is," another woman chimed in.
"Exactly." The woman who had scoffed earlier felt even more pleased when someone echoed her words, a triumphant smile spreading across her face as she slightly raised her chin. "Before marriage, An Bingwen was perfectly fine; she fell ill right after getting married. Her previous husband was just like that."
"Isn't that right?" Many others nodded in agreement.
"She has the fate of a husband-killer. Just look at her submissive demeanor, her waist so frail it seems boneless, her shallow brows and narrow eyes, and her thin shoulders. It's obvious she has the look of someone destined for misfortune. Back when Bingwen Brother married her, he acted like he had found a treasure, hmph!" With more people agreeing with her, a robust woman spoke even more bluntly, showing no hesitation at all.
