Lin Wenhui and Zhi Lan almost simultaneously sat up in bed.
Lin Wenhui pulled the lamp switch by the bedside, and the room was instantly illuminated.
After exchanging a glance with Zhi Lan, Lin Wenhui put on his coat, got out of bed, and walked to the window. He noticed that several houses in Dazhuang had their lights on, and Lin Wenhui realized what had happened.
He hurriedly got dressed and was about to open the door to go outside.
"What's wrong?" Zhi Lan asked, sitting up in bed with her clothes on.
"It's Shusheng Brother and the others who have returned. An Bingwen must have already left. I want to check it out."
After saying that, Lin Wenhui opened the door and went out.
At that moment, the three children in the next room woke up.
In the adjacent room, there was a proper bed against one wall where Lin Xi and An Shaomin were sleeping, while a makeshift bed made of wooden planks was set up against the opposite wall where An Shaojie was sleeping.
Lin Xi rubbed her sleepy eyes and shouted loudly, "Mother En!"
Hearing Lin Xi's call, Zhi Lan realized that the three children had also been startled awake and hurriedly put on her clothes to go over.
"I'm scared," Lin Xi said, rubbing her eyes.
Zhi Lan gently touched Lin Xi and Shaw Min's heads before sitting down by An Shaojie's bed. She lowered her head and softly asked, "Would you like to go sleep in Mother’s room with your sister and Lin Xi?"
An Shaojie tightly closed his lips and lowered his head in thought.
Lin Xi and Shaw Min looked at him with hopeful eyes.
After a long pause, An Shaojie raised his head and slowly said, "Let them go! I'm not afraid."
Zhi Lan was taken aback for a moment. She stroked his head and asked affectionately, "Aren't you going?"
"I..." An Shaojie hesitated, then suddenly lifted his head to meet Jia Zhilan's gaze, firmly stating, "I'm not afraid."
"Oh, well then." Zhi Lan held An Shaojie's hands.
"Good boy, now lie down." She gently helped An Shaojie lie down and tucked him in before walking over to Lin Xi and Shaw Min's bed. She draped clothes over them and waved her hand, saying, "Come on, you two come sleep with me."
"But what about Dad? Where did Dad go?" Lin Xi asked cautiously, rubbing her still-sleepy eyes as she followed Zhi Lan.
"Nothing much. Your dad went out for something. Let's go to sleep." Once inside the room, Zhi Lan quickly arranged for Lin Xi and Shaw Min to settle down.
An Shaomin didn’t ask anything. It seemed she had already sensed what was happening. She lay quietly beside Lin Xi, her eyes wide open as if she were afraid of something or perhaps listening to the sounds outside, or feeling the changes in the world beyond.
After Zhi Lan turned off the lights, An Shaomin still stared wide-eyed into the darkness.
Around two in the morning, many people gathered at Liu Xiuzhen's home.
Liu Xiuzhen was holding a basin of hot water, washing Qing Shusheng's feet and face.
"An Bingwen left at two o'clock in the morning. Now there is only Bai Cuifen at the hospital. Teacher Lin, can you check if we have enough people here? If not, you can wake up a few young people to help. The stretcher we used to carry An Bingwen to the hospital this morning is still there and hasn't been taken apart. Later, I'll bring a few people to carry An Bingwen back," Qing Shusheng said while washing his face.
"I'll go with you to see what I can help with," Lin Wenhui said, recalling what Liu Xiuzhen had asked him earlier that day.
"You don't need to go. You have classes tomorrow. Besides, the village needs someone to make decisions and arrange things. If we keep going back and forth like this, by the time we return, it will probably be after breakfast or even around noon. Look, it's almost dawn," Qing Shusheng said as he glanced outside.
