"Okay." Lin Wenhui agreed and got up to go to Lin Xi's room to sleep.
The next morning, Lin Wenhui gave the key to An Bingwen's house to Zhi Lan, instructing her to tidy up a bit. "We have to make sure An Bingwen comes back to a clean home," Lin Wenhui said.
After adjusting her classes with other teachers at school, Lin Wenhui hurried back and went directly to An Bingwen's house. Zhi Lan was already cleaning up inside.
"Where are An Shaojie and Shaw Min?" Lin Wenhui asked.
"They just had breakfast and are playing at home with Lin Xi," Zhi Lan replied.
"Do An Shaojie and Shaw Min know that their father has passed away?" Lin Wenhui inquired.
"I haven't told them, but it seems they already know. An Shaojie hasn't said a word since then. Shaw Min is okay, but he has also been much quieter," Zhi Lan sighed.
After Zhi Lan finished tidying up the house, she prepared to cook. She took some money out of her pocket and handed it to Wenhui.
"Everyone has worked hard these past few days, especially Shusheng Brother. Sigh, he must be feeling upset too. Go buy some meat for everyone to replenish their strength. After the rice is steamed, I'll go pick some vegetables from our garden. Look at Cui Fen's garden; it's all overgrown. Sigh, she gave up everything to take care of An Bingwen and still couldn't keep him in the end," Zhi Lan said.
Around noon, Qing Shusheng and several young men carried An Bingwen back to Liu Family Village, followed by the sobbing Bai Cuifen.
After bringing An Bingwen into the house, Qing Shusheng initially planned to place him in an unused guest room behind the main hall, but Bai Cuifen firmly disagreed.
"We were married; how can we put him somewhere else at this final moment? Let's keep An Bingwen in our bedroom," she insisted.
Here, Zhi Lan quickly arranged for those returning from the hospital to have a meal.
While others were eating, Zhi Lan took a plate, filled it with rice and some dishes, and returned home.
As she passed Liu Xiuzhen's house, she saw Liu Xiuzhen eating in the living room. Zhi Lan entered and greeted her.
"Sister-in-law, I'm heading home for a bit to bring some food for the three kids. Can you help keep an eye on things at An Bingwen's place later?"
"Don't worry about it, go ahead," Liu Xiuzhen waved her hand with chopsticks in the air. "I'll come over as soon as I finish eating."
After leaving Liu Xiuzhen's house, Zhi Lan went straight home.
The three children were in Lin Xi's room, kneeling on one knee by the bed, huddled together looking at a picture book.
Zhi Lan quietly walked in and looked at the three children. Their faces were filled with happiness, contentment, and joy. The warm sunlight outside shone on them, casting a golden glow.
Zhi Lan couldn't bear to call out to them or disturb them, especially seeing the rare fleeting smiles on An Shaojie and Shaw Min's faces, which made her heart ache.
"Mother En." After a long while, Lin Xi finally noticed Zhi Lan. She lifted her head with a smile, clearly still immersed in the joy brought by the picture book.
Hearing Lin Xi's call, An Shaojie and Shaw Min turned around, their faces reflecting a simple happiness.
However, the moment An Shaojie turned to see Zhi Lan, his smile instantly faded away like smoke dissipating without a trace.
He shifted his gaze to the plastic bag that Zhi Lan was holding.
Zhi Lan carefully took the food out of the plastic bag.
"An Shaojie, Shaw Min, Lin Xi, come over for dinner." It was unclear when it started, but whenever these three children were together, Zhi Lan had developed a habit of calling An Shaojie's name first. The child's frail figure and sorrowful eyes always made people feel a pang of sympathy.
