When Lu Chenyu's deep voice whispered, "What's wrong, Lin Xi," in her ear, it sounded like a lover's gentle murmur. If it weren't for the situation they were in, Lin Xi's heart would surely have fluttered.
At that moment, Lu Chenyu looked at Lin Xi with a pained expression. If it weren't for the circumstances, he would have reached out to wipe away the tears of grievance on her face.
The little snake was something he had caught in the grass on his way to school. He remembered that their biology teacher was about to cover the chapter on reptiles, so he put the snake into a transparent plastic box that had just held his snack and brought it to class, planning to keep it at home and observe it after the lesson.
He had originally placed the box containing the snake in his own drawer, but later, while searching for his homework in the drawer, he took the box out and casually put it into Lin Xi's desk drawer. After finding his homework, he forgot to take the box back.
He never expected that not only would it scare Lin Xi, but it would also cause such a disruption in class.
Who would have thought that as soon as he finished speaking, his group of friends would mimic him in a strange tone and start teasing, saying, "What's wrong? Lin Xi!"

"What are you shouting about? What are you laughing at?" Lu Chenyu stood up and shouted at those who were screaming.

Lin Xi's face turned pale with anger and then flushed red. Suddenly embarrassed and furious, she shouted, "Lu Chenyu, you jerk! I won't sit next to you anymore." With that, Lin Xi ran out of the classroom.
In the following days, Lin Xi was determined not to sit next to Lu Chenyu anymore. She went to find their homeroom teacher, Mr. Li, every day to request a seat change.
Mr. Li continuously tried to persuade her. "Lin Xi, you need to trust my judgment. Lu Chenyu is not a bad student; you just need to be patient with him. He will improve; trust me."
"Lin Xi, don't let down my trust in you. I believe you can handle your relationship with him well; you can help him change his bad habits."
"Lin Xi, you are a class officer, an excellent student, and a model student. You need to help classmates like Lu Chenyu who can improve, and the teacher believes you can do it."
Every time she brought up the idea of changing seats, Mr. Li would pull out these words and dismiss her request.
Fine, since I can't change seats, I'll think of a way to make him move his desk on his own, Lin Xi thought angrily.
Don't be fooled by Lin Xi's usually gentle demeanor; when she becomes stubborn and headstrong, she is as unyielding as a bull. Once she made up her mind, it was hard for her to change it.
From the day she made that decision, she truly stopped having any interaction with Lu Chenyu. Although her gentle nature prevented her from reaching an irreconcilable state with him, she was much more resolute than before.
She hardly allowed him to touch anything of hers. Even if it was just her desk, as soon as Lu Chenyu's elbow crossed the line of her desk even slightly, she would glare at him with disgust and indifference or scream in annoyance until he moved his arm away.
Lu Chenyu's seat was behind Lin Xi's, and during class breaks, he inevitably had to pass behind her. When Sophomore first started and they were seated together, Lu Chenyu would always knock on her desk, prompting her to stand up. Later on, he didn't need to knock; as long as he waited quietly for a moment, she would automatically stand up to let him pass.
Now, she remained completely still; whether Lu Chenyu knocked on the desk or stood beside her waiting, she ignored him.
At first, Lu Chenyu tried to force his way through as if he had just met Lin Xi. Since she ignored him, he thought he didn't need to greet her and could simply push through from behind.
He assumed Lin Xi would still be weak like before; seeing him force his way past her from behind would make her shy enough to stand up and let him through.
However, to his surprise, Lin Xi did not stand up and instead adopted another way to deal with him.
That day, shortly after class ended, a terrified scream suddenly echoed in the classroom. "Don't touch me!"
This scream immediately drew everyone's attention; it was Lin Xi's voice. Her scream was as terrifying as when she had seen that snake in her drawer that day, as if Lu Chenyu standing behind her was the little green snake he had once placed in her drawer.
At that moment, all eyes in the class turned toward him as if he had done something to disrupt the safety of the classroom.
Behind Lin Xi, Lu Chenyu was at a loss, raising his hands and smiling awkwardly at those looking at him, his face flushed with embarrassment.
This was one of the few truly embarrassing situations Lu Chenyu had encountered, yet it was one he could not handle easily.
In front of others, Lu Chenyu had faced awkwardness before and usually brushed off troublesome people with a smile. However, facing Lin Xi, he could not simply laugh it off.
"Lu Chenyu, what bad thing did you do?" a male classmate asked with a teasing grin.
"I... I didn't do anything! Is it wrong to just want to go out and have some fun?"
Helplessly, Lu Chenyu shook his head and sat back down, no longer thinking about wanting to go out during the break.
Unexpectedly, just as Lu Chenyu sat down, a classmate suddenly mimicked his tone and shouted, "What's up! Lin Xi!"
The classroom erupted in laughter. From then on, whenever Lin Xi screamed, there would always be some strange voice following up with, "What's up? Lin Xi!"
Of course, as Lin Xi continued to make things difficult for Lu Chenyu over time, everyone seemed to understand that her screams were intentionally meant to trouble him, hoping he would realize the difficulty and actively ask the teacher to change seats.
It seemed that this time Lin Xi was determined to cut ties with him; that was what the classmates said behind their backs.
The relationship between Lin Xi and Lu Chenyu brought vibrancy to what would otherwise be a dull high school life. Thus, every time class ended, the sophomore students seemed to look forward to the sound of her screams followed by everyone chanting in unison, "What's up? Lin Xi!" Of course, Lin Xi wasn't completely unwilling to give Lu Chenyu any chance to step out; after all, nature calls. Lu Chenyu knew that deep down, Lin Xi wasn't someone who enjoyed making things difficult for others. So when urgent matters arose, he would quietly say, "Could you please move aside? I really need to use the restroom."
