"Are you asking me to go to your house? To sleep?" Qinglan was unsure if she had misheard or if Simple had made a mistake. "Your own attention?"
"Yeah." She had just nodded but quickly shook her head and said, "No, it's my brother who asked me to come and get you to go to my house."
"Your brother?" Qinglan found it amusing; this lie was too clumsy. "I don't even know your brother. Who is he?"
Indeed, Qinglan had never met Jian Ming, and Simple rarely mentioned Jian Ming in front of Qinglan.
She thought that since she often talked about Qinglan in front of Jian Ming, Jian Ming would know about Qinglan, and therefore Qinglan would also know about Jian Ming. She forgot that she had never mentioned her brother Jian Ming in front of Qinglan.
Sometimes, that's how it is between people; one person may be very familiar with another, while the other knows nothing about them.
"My brother is just my brother. Well, forget about him." Simple waved her hand. "My mom also asked me to invite you to our house."
"Your mom? What's that about? How does she know me?" Qinglan was even more confused.
"Hey!" Qinglan sighed and said, "Isn't it because you're so outstanding? I often mention you in front of them, saying how good your grades are. My mom is a teacher! She loves students with good grades. As soon as I mention your name, she knows you. Didn't you win some award in the national physics competition last time? My mom teaches physics, so she knows your name."
Qinglan listened like it was a convoluted love story as Simple brought up one character after another.
"Wow, am I that famous?" Qinglan opened her mouth wide. "You don't have some other tricks up your sleeve, do you?" Qinglan pointed at Simple's nose and stepped closer to her.
Simple pushed Qinglan's hand away and said, "Let me tell you directly then; my brother wants to ask you about someone."
"Your brother wants to ask me about someone? Who?" Qinglan asked.
"No matter who it is! We'll talk about it when we get to my house!" After saying this, without caring whether Qinglan had finished packing her things, Simple grabbed the bag that Qinglan had packed and pulled her out.
When they arrived at Simple's house, her parents and older brother warmly welcomed Qinglan, and they prepared a feast for her in the evening.
"I just like students who study seriously and have good grades. I have never shied away from this belief. I never believe that someone who does poorly in school will do well in society. Every industry needs serious people; if an unserious person is doing well in society, then there must be something wrong with that society."
After dinner, Simple's mom and Qinglan sat on the sofa chatting. When she said this, her eyes were on Simple.
Simple understood her mother's gaze and playfully said, "Mom, here you go again. I told you, I met Qinglan too late. If I had met her earlier, I would have realized my mistakes and corrected my bad habits long ago. I promise to learn from Qinglan in the future. I've decided that no matter how I do on this exam, I want to be with Qinglan."
"She’s going to a prestigious university, and you’re only going to a junior college. How can you be together?" Simple's mom asked reproachfully.
"Why can't we be together? Just because we can't attend the same school doesn't mean we can't study in the same city. As long as we're in the same city, we can be together. I've decided that wherever Qinglan studies, that's where I'll go too," Simple said, shaking her head confidently as if she had come up with a brilliant idea.
Qinglan smiled and replied, "Sounds good." Then she turned to Simple's mom and said, "Auntie, don't worry. Simple is actually quite good. She’s not unserious; she just likes to have fun a bit more. From now on, I'll take care of her, and she'll behave." Qinglan smiled at Simple.
Simple nodded repeatedly in agreement, her mouth full of food, making it unclear whether she was saying "yes" or "eat."
In the evening, Qinglan sat on the sofa with Simple's parents watching TV, feeling anxious inside. This was because Simple had mentioned that her brother wanted to ask her about someone, but Jian Ming had been in his room on the computer since after dinner.
After graduating from high school, Jian Ming was accepted into Beijing A Certain Normal University majoring in Computer Software and shared a desk with Shaw Min's classmate Reiko, who was majoring in Economics.
It wasn't until Qinglan and Simple went back to their room to sleep that Jian Ming finally came out of his room.
“Simple, didn't you say your brother wanted to ask me about someone? Why hasn't he inquired yet? Who exactly does he want to know about?” Qinglan asked while taking off her clothes.
“Oh, it's not really about asking someone specific. When my brother was in high school, he probably liked An Shaojie's sister, An Shaomin. Later, An Shaomin suddenly didn't take the college entrance exam. My brother even went to your village to look for her, but it seems he didn't see her. So he still doesn't know why Shaw Min suddenly gave up on the exam.”
Upon hearing Simple's words, Qinglan was startled and suddenly recalled something from last summer. “No wonder when I first saw Jian Ming, he looked so familiar,” Qinglan thought to herself.
“I heard that An Shaojie's sister is working in Shenzhen now. You’re from the same village; you should know about her situation, right? What’s going on?” Simple asked, oblivious to the change in Qinglan's expression.
Simple's sudden mention of Shaw Min made Qinglan think of An Shaojie, who now harbored deep resentment towards her. He should also be staying at school tonight; by the time the college entrance exam ended, there were no more buses from the county town to their town. He would probably return home tomorrow morning.
After Shaw Min went to Shenzhen, she reportedly hadn't returned home. This college entrance exam was a big deal for their family, especially for Shaw Min, who had always doted on her younger brother. She would definitely take this opportunity to come home.
“Hey! Qinglan, what’s going on?”
Simple tapped Qinglan's arm, startling her. “What? What’s going on?” Qinglan replied, having not paid attention to what Simple had said earlier.
“Fine! I've been talking to you for ages and you weren't even listening. What were you thinking about?” Simple pretended to be angry.
“I wasn't thinking about anything. What did you ask?” Qinglan responded. “Tell me, are you thinking about An Shaojie?” Simple suddenly asked.
“What? What nonsense are you talking about?” Qinglan feigned nonchalance but felt a jolt inside. “I’m from the same village as Brother Shaojie; isn’t it normal to think of him? I was just wondering what time his bus is tomorrow and if we could go home together,” Qinglan explained evasively.
