Su Hailu pointed her finger at Lin Xi's forehead and said, "A typical guy who values romance over friendship. I'll remember your abandonment of me tonight. However," she paused and suddenly changed her tone, "it seems I can go downstairs with you! There's no need to rush to kick me out, right? Are you going to dress up?" Su Hailu's eyes had a strange, mischievous glint.
"Dress up for what? It's not like I'm going on a date with a boyfriend; it's just childhood friends from the same village," Lin Xi replied as she stood in front of the mirror by the dormitory entrance, slightly fixing her hair and clothes before linking arms with Su Hailu and heading downstairs.
Once they reached the ground floor, Su Hailu leaned in close to Lin Xi's ear and whispered, "Which handsome guy are we talking about? Please point him out before I leave."
Lin Xi shrugged lightly and, covering her mouth, mischievously whispered back in Su Hailu's ear, "Unfortunately, I don't know which handsome guy it is either; the last time we met was in third grade. Hmm! But hopefully, he is a handsome guy." Lin Xi emphasized this last part.
"Ah, what should we do then?" Su Hailu exclaimed softly, her expression immediately catching the attention of a nearby boy.
He walked up to stand in front of Lin Xi and Su Hailu, glancing at Su Hailu.
It was around six o'clock in the evening; night had not fully fallen yet, and both parties' expressions and postures were clearly visible.
After examining Su Hailu for no more than a second, An Shaojie stepped to the left and stood formally in front of Lin Xi, tightening his grip on the books he was holding. "Lin Xi, do you still remember me? I'm An Shaojie, Brother Shaojie."
"Wow!" Lin Xi hadn't reacted yet when she suddenly heard a scream from beside her that nearly drew everyone's attention.
Su Hailu covered her mouth with both hands, her eyes wide open like lanterns. "This is amazing!"
Everyone looked at Su Hailu, except for An Shaojie, who didn't spare her a glance.
"Hey! Hey! An Shaojie, Brother Shaojie, you've got it wrong! I'm your childhood companion Lin Xi!" Su Hailu stepped forward with her hands behind her back, raising her face and looking provocatively at An Shaojie.
Su Hailu was undoubtedly a stunning beauty—thick eyebrows and large eyes, a straight nose, thin sexy lips, long hair slightly curled down to her shoulders. Her black coat accentuated her fair skin beautifully. She wore half-high-heeled pointed leather boots and tight maroon pants that radiated youthful vitality while exuding an alluring charm.
An Shaojie remained unfazed as his deep voice slowly emerged. "I know you're not Lin Xi; she is."
"Why am I not? Why is she? We haven't seen each other since third grade," Su Hailu stepped closer with an aggressive gaze, persistently staring at An Shaojie as she questioned him confusingly.
She is not an easy person to deal with.
"Because even though I have never met Lin Xi, she has always been in my heart." An Shaojie's gaze was calm, without a hint of evasion or panic, his voice steady like the water in a winter lake, without a ripple.
"Wow, Lin Xi, did you hear that? You've always been in his heart!" Su Hailu exclaimed, playfully tapping Lin Xi's arm.
"It seems I have no hope now, haha!" She then laughed heartily, giving An Shaojie a light pat on the shoulder. "Good luck, Brother Shaojie, bye!"
Su Hailu shot an ambiguous glance at Lin Xi, as if she had uncovered Lin Xi's secret feelings. Lin Xi's face suddenly flushed bright red, and her ears grew warm.
After stepping half a meter away, Su Hailu turned back and snapped her fingers at Lin Xi. "He's really handsome, you know, Lin Xi. Handsome guy, keep it up." She then gave An Shaojie another suggestive look.
With Su Hailu's teasing, Lin Xi felt a bit embarrassed. Once Su Hailu had walked far enough away, she shyly called out "Brother Shaojie."
Before coming down from the dormitory building, Lin Xi thought that standing in front of An Shaojie would feel as natural as it did when they were children.
Although she hadn't called him "Brother Shaojie" to his face since they parted ways at the age of nine, this title often slipped out when she talked about him and Qinglan with classmates and friends; it felt familiar and comfortable.
So before heading downstairs, she made no mental preparations, just like when they used to walk to school together as kids. But little did she know that after Su Hailu's interruption, what she thought would be a normal encounter had become somewhat awkward and ambiguous.
Once Su Hailu left, the surrounding air seemed to freeze suddenly. The two people who had just faced each other calmly were now at a loss for words. An Shaojie, who had been so composed moments ago, could no longer bring himself to look into Lin Xi's eyes.
"Lin Xi, I..."
"Brother Shaojie, I..."
After a few moments of silence hanging in the air, both of them spoke at the same time.
They exchanged a glance, and Lin Xi couldn't help but cover her mouth and chuckle lightly. "That was my classmate, Su Hailu. She's... just that kind of person, hehe."
"Hehe, it's nothing." An Shaojie rarely smiled, and it was unusual for his voice to be so light and unsteady, his usual indifferent expression disappearing.
"How have you been these years?" Lin Xi finally lifted her head and looked at An Shaojie, trying hard to calm herself down.
"Not bad." An Shaojie chuckled, surprisingly appearing a bit shy. This demeanor was something Lin Xi had never seen in him before; it meant that during his infancy, toddler years, and childhood, An Shaojie had never shown such shyness.
Indeed, in Lin Xi's memory, An Shaojie always had a calm yet uneasy expression, detached yet cold.
A classmate walked past Lin Xi and An Shaojie, muttering softly, "There are people standing in front of the dormitory talking about love?"
The two suddenly felt a bit awkward.
"Oh, let's find a place to walk or sit down and chat, okay?" Just like when they were younger, as long as he was in front of Lin Xi, An Shaojie always waited for her to speak first and make decisions.
He was always her echo. "Mm, okay."
Although this was a habit from their childhood and they hadn't seen each other for over a decade, they still unconsciously maintained this habit.
Walking side by side through the bustling crowd, passing the busiest campus road until they reached the quieter Academy Road, Lin Xi took a deep breath. "What's wrong? Nervous?" Seeing Lin Xi appear as if she had shed a heavy burden, An Shaojie made a joke. "Not at all. What's there to be nervous about with Brother Shaojie around?" Lin Xi replied casually.
