The day Zhu Shuting learned about her boyfriend's first love was a Monday morning, right after the third period. Her boyfriend had gone to the restroom, leaving his phone on the pages of a book on the desk.
At that time, using mobile phones was just becoming popular on campus. Her boyfriend came from a well-off family, and over the past two years, he had been tutoring and doing odd jobs alongside Zhu Shuting, earning some money for himself. So last Saturday, she accompanied him to buy a new phone.
While her boyfriend was in the restroom, his phone buzzed on the desk beside Zhu Shuting. At that moment, she was chatting with Reiko.
The phone vibrated on the desk, causing the books to tremble slightly. It spun on the pages before falling onto the table.
When the phone first rang, Zhu Shuting merely glanced at it and had no intention of answering. She and her boyfriend had always given each other plenty of space, and her personality was generally calm. She rarely participated in activities with him and his group of friends, so despite the buzzing phone, she continued to chat happily with Reiko.
"Why don't you answer it? It might be something urgent," Reiko suggested as the ringtone sounded for a second time.
"Probably just a call from his family," Zhu Shuting replied casually as she picked up the phone to take a look.
When they bought the phone yesterday, her boyfriend mentioned that he had only shared his number with his family and her.
After thinking for a moment, Zhu Shuting decided to answer with a "Hello."
On the other end was a girl's voice. After considering for a moment, Zhu Shuting asked, "Who is this?"
The girl seemed taken aback and responded with a somewhat rude tone, "Who are you?"
Feeling as if she were being confronted as an unfaithful partner, Zhu Shuting felt a surge of anger and coldly replied, "I am his girlfriend. Who are you?"
At that moment, Zhu Shuting realized that her assertive tone carried an unsettling sense of suspicion.
Sure enough, the other party coldly laughed and said, "You are his girlfriend? Let Zhu Jingpeng take the call." The tone was already quite rude.
Zhu Jingpeng is the name of Zhu Shuting's boyfriend.
"Why should he take the call? This is my phone, why does he need to answer it?" Zhu Shuting calmly retorted.
Zhu Shuting's aura was evident here; the more chaotic the situation, the calmer she became, and at critical moments, she could unexpectedly deliver a killer blow that left others dumbfounded.
The other party was clearly taken aback and fell silent for a long time. Suddenly, they began to shout furiously into the phone, "Zhu Jingpeng, that big liar! I am his first love girlfriend from several years ago!"
Her loud voice was heard by almost all the other students in the classroom.
At that moment, Zhu Jingpeng walked to the classroom door with a smile on his face.
His phone was pressed against Zhu Shuting's ear.
He paused for a moment, retracting his foot that was about to step into the classroom, looking at Zhu Shuting with a somewhat panicked expression.
However, seeing Zhu Shuting smiling without any signs of distress calmed him down.
Zhu Jingpeng's smile returned, and his facial muscles relaxed as he walked up to Zhu Shuting.
"Whose call is it?" he asked with a smirk.
At this point, Zhu Shuting had already hung up the phone. No one noticed what she said before hanging up because everyone's attention was focused on Zhu Jingpeng at the classroom door.
As Zhu Jingpeng moved forward, everyone's gaze followed him until nearly all the students' eyes were on Zhu Shuting and Zhu Jingpeng.
The classroom, which had just been noisy, was now so quiet that one could hear a pin drop.
Everyone knew that Zhu Jingpeng had a first love studying in a different city, except for Zhu Shuting and a few close friends of hers.
Of course, Reiko was one of those exceptions; otherwise, someone as dramatic as Reiko would have already spilled the beans to Shuting.
The classmates were aware that despite Shuting's usually gentle and quiet demeanor, she had a fiery temper that could be quite explosive. They had witnessed several intense scenes between her and Zhu Jingpeng during their tumultuous relationship, which were truly breathtaking.
So when they saw Zhu Shuting and Zhu Jingpeng so invested in their respective relationships, and with Zhu Jingpeng constantly assuring familiar faces that he had already broken up with his ex-girlfriend, everyone believed that his relationship with Zhu Shuting was genuine. This is why they refrained from mentioning his long-distance girlfriend in front of her.
Everyone was waiting to see how Zhu Shuting would explode this time.
How would Zhu Jingpeng respond to her?
Would he manage to get through this smoothly? Everyone knew that Zhu Shuting was quite stubborn, especially when it came to matters of the heart.
They held their breath, anticipating the storm that was about to hit.
However...
Zhu Shuting stood before Zhu Jingpeng with an incredibly elegant smile on her face, gracefully handing him her phone.
Zhu Jingpeng looked at her, wearing a fawning smile.
"Zhu Jingpeng, your girlfriend just called you. I'm sorry I answered it and even made a little joke, saying this phone is mine and that you bought it for me because I'm the one who spends every day with you. She must be furious and has probably scolded me. You should call her back quickly to explain and comfort her. If necessary, I can step in to clarify things; just let me know."
As Zhu Shuting spoke, she organized her pens on the desk.
Zhu Jingpeng's smile was frozen on her face.
After organizing herself, Zhu Shuting made a gesture for "please make way" with her hand, passing by Zhu Jingpeng and walking to Reiko's seat. She tossed something onto the desk and said, "Go inside."
Reiko sat obediently in the inner seat, leaving the one by the aisle for her.
Reiko initially wanted to ask, "What happened?"
But after thinking it over, it didn't seem appropriate. What happened? Did she really need to ask? Wasn't it all clear to see?
"Shuting..." Reiko softly called her name.
"Nothing's wrong," Shuting replied with a faint smile.
Yet Reiko could see almost unbearable sadness hidden behind her gentle smile, as if she were on the verge of tears.
After class, they continued to chat and laugh together on their way back to the dormitory.
Once they returned to the dorm, Shuting fell silent.
"If you want to cry, just let it out," Reiko said.
"Why should I cry?" Shuting retorted. Reiko stepped forward and gently embraced her. Leaning on Reiko's shoulder, Shuting finally couldn't hold back any longer; tears flowed like a stream. But it wasn't the cathartic crying that Reiko had imagined.
