Several students who had already sensed the situation turned their gaze toward the source of the sound.
It was An Shaojie, who slammed a book down on the table. He then stood up and walked out of the classroom.
Every time Qinglan and Xu Wen were mentioned, he always displayed this kind of behavior and expression. His classmates had grown accustomed to his inexplicable emotions; they glanced at him once and then returned to the lively scene.
"How strange," someone murmured softly.
It was indeed strange. He didn't like interacting with Qinglan, which even made others feel that he disliked her. Yet, it seemed he was always jealous of Qinglan and Xu Wen.
There were also rumors that recently he had been getting close to a girl from the School of Management, showing signs of being in a relationship.
Since he was already in a relationship, was it unreasonable to expect others to keep their distance? It was both unbelievable and understandable.
Qinglan watched An Shaojie's back as he left the classroom.
"Who is Xu Wen?" Zhou Xiaochuan asked innocently.
At that moment, Qinglan approached and patted Hu Jiao'er on the shoulder, saying, "Jiao'er, class is about to start. Let's ask tomorrow."
It was currently a large combined class, and Qinglan didn't want everyone to associate Zhou Xiaochuan's question with her and Xu Wen.
Moreover, even if An Shaojie had someone he liked, even if he would never like her, Qinglan's heart would always ache for him!
She didn’t want to see him in such an emotional state because it hurt her heart!
But Hu Jiao'er stubbornly stood in front of Zhou Xiaochuan, not smiling, her expression serious.
"Zhou Xiaochuan, you just need to answer whether you will participate in the outing this weekend."
"Isn't this a class activity?" Zhou Xiaochuan countered with a question.
"It is," Hu Jiao'er replied succinctly.
Qinglan stood aside watching the two of them in a standoff.
"Am I a member of the class?" Zhou Xiaochuan's eyes fixed on Hu Jiao'er, not smiling.
At this point, Jiao'er's momentum began to weaken.
"Yes," came her weak voice.
"That's right. As a member of the class, I naturally have to participate in class activities."
After going around in circles, Hu Jiao'er's straightforward nature was worn down by him. She turned her face away in silence, "Alright, you win."
Qinglan stood to the side, chuckling quietly.
Another pair of rivals was about to emerge! The feeling of facing an opponent was quite nice.
When Hu Jiao'er angrily returned to her seat, the class bell rang.
Zhou Xiaochuan continued to watch her as she took her seat until class began.
He seemed to let out a meaningful bitter smile and shook his head.
After class, he returned to the dormitory and asked his roommate about Hu Jiao'er’s name.
"Hu Jiao'er? Jiao'er? Hmm, that's a nice name!" He remembered the first girl's name.
"What's up? Are you looking for a chance to get back at her or provoke her?" his roommate asked.
He was taken aback, raising an eyebrow. "Get back at her? Provoke?"
"Yeah, I advise you not to mess with her. Don't be fooled by her silly appearance; she's quite clever. If you provoke her, you'll only end up being ridiculed and humiliated, fleeing in disgrace. That chubby girl is very sharp," his roommate warned.
Zhou Xiaochuan smiled lightly and thought to himself, "If I'm going to provoke her, I might as well do it for a lifetime, and I must succeed; otherwise, what does it mean to be a man?"
The cold river water began to warm; yellow ducks played in the spring. Shallow grass lined the riverbank, and fine rain welcomed the green willows.
In early spring, the tall Phoenix Trees on campus have slowly begun to sprout a hint of new green in the misty rain.
Lin Xi, dressed in white jeans, walked towards the Fifth Teaching Building with a heavy heart. The first two classes this morning were Probability Theory and Mathematical Statistics, a subject that Lin Xi liked and valued.
However, today she felt no mood for it at all; her steps seemed as heavy as a thousand pounds, making it difficult for her to move forward.
“Lin Xi, hurry up! Class is about to start,” a girl rushed past her from behind and waved her hand back.
“Oh, I know,” Lin Xi replied absentmindedly.
Since the beginning of the semester until early March, An Shaojie had asked Lin Xi several times to study together, but she had found various excuses to refuse him. Yet every time she turned him down and saw the disappointment and pain in his eyes, she felt a deep sense of discomfort. The bond they shared since childhood held significant importance in her heart, making it hard for her to completely sever her feelings for him.
However, childhood affection does not equate to love.
For An Shaojie now, what he needed was love, not mere affection. But Lin Xi could not give him love; she simply could not.
Her heart, her love, everything was given to Lu Chenyu, the one who occupied her thoughts despite not showing any melancholy in his eyes.
Today, sitting in class, Lin Xi could not absorb anything the teacher was saying; her mind was elsewhere.
“Lin Xi.”
“Hmm.”
Under the cold moonlight, Lu Chenyu held Lin Xi's hand as they strolled along the campus track where they shared their first kiss. The snow on the ground had not completely melted yet, and the white snow appeared particularly bright in the night.
This was Lin Xi's first date with Lu Chenyu after the winter break.
“Why haven’t you contacted me? You didn’t reach out after returning from Beijing,” Lin Xi asked as she gazed into Lu Chenyu's eyes.
“I…” Lu Chenyu glanced at the ground before looking back at Lin Xi with uncertain eyes. “I’m afraid I can’t give you the happiness you want.”
“Why can’t you?” Lin Xi gently asked.
Lu Chenyu lowered his head and did not answer.
"Can't you give me happiness? Can you give happiness to someone else?" Lin Xi continued to ask.
"Because I don't have the ability..." After a long time, Lu Chenyu finally spoke in a very soft voice.
"You don't have the ability? Lu Chenyu, do I need a lot? Do I need more than others?" Lin Xi looked at Lu Chenyu with some grievance, tears glistening in her eyes in the darkness.
"No." Lu Chenyu replied somewhat weakly.
"Two people in love can be happy as long as they love each other, do you know that?" Lin Xi asked tearfully, looking at Lu Chenyu.
"I... Lin Xi." Lu Chenyu gently pulled Lin Xi into his embrace, wiped away the tears from the corners of her eyes, and softly murmured, "I'm sorry, it's my fault."
"Will you still contact me in the future?" Lin Xi asked softly in his ear while crying.
"Contact." He tightened his embrace around Lin Xi, and his low voice gently called her name in her ear, "Lin Xi."
"Don't ever leave me, forever and ever." Lin Xi leaned against Lu Chenyu's chest, gazing at his handsome face.
There was still a barely noticeable hint of melancholy in his eyes. "Hmm, I won't." Lu Chenyu stroked Lin Xi's hair, gently rubbing his chin on the top of her head. His soft voice pierced through the silent night sky, causing the moon and stars to shyly hide away.
