Several other roommates were on the phone, informing friends and family about when they would be going home. The remaining two girls had already had a hometown friend come in and were chatting with her.
Qinglan stood there in confusion for a moment before continuing to speak to the girl who had asked her a question earlier, "I came to find Lin Xi a few times before, during the May Day holiday. Don't you remember? You were in the dormitory."
The girl finally stopped what she was doing, seemingly recalling Qinglan, "Oh, I remember now. You came to see her a few times. Was there something you needed?"
She then called out to another girl in the dormitory, "Hey, do you have Lin Xi's phone number? She's been looking for Lin Xi, and I don't have her number." The girl turned back to Qinglan and smiled apologetically.
"Oh, did you mention to her that I came looking for her last time?" Qinglan asked politely.
"Oh!" The girl slapped her forehead, "I'm sorry, I forgot. She hasn't been in the dormitory for several days after that, so I completely forgot about it." The girl kept apologizing.
At that moment, the girl who had been asked finally found a phone book among the clutter and provided Lin Xi's mobile number to Qinglan.
Just before leaving, Qinglan remembered something and turned back to ask, "Excuse me, where is your Lin Xi from?"
"Aren't you her friend? You don't know where she's from?" The girl seemed surprised. "Don't you know her?"
"Oh, I don't know her. I'm just trying to confirm because I used to have a friend named Lin Xi as well, so I wanted to make sure she wasn't the same Lin Xi I knew," Qinglan replied.
"Oh, I see! She seems to be from Hubei; that's all we know," several other girls chimed in.
After thanking them, Qinglan left Lin Xi's dormitory feeling a wave of discomfort wash over her as complex emotions surged within her. Although she hadn't met this girl named Lin Xi yet, she was already quite certain that this Lin Xi was the one she had been missing all along.
Because this afternoon, after finishing her last exam, she saw An Shaojie grab his bag and rush out of the classroom, telling classmates he needed to catch a train home at seven.
They had planned to go home together.
It must have been Lin Xi that An Shaojie was waiting for by the roadside during the last winter break when they went home.
Who else could make him search so frantically? Who else could make him wait like that?
No wonder she felt Lin Xi's presence nearby.
After leaving Lin Xi's dormitory area, Qinglan did not head straight back to her own dorm but wandered around the campus. With the school on break, students from nearby Beijing had returned home, and many from farther away had also left, making the campus much less crowded than usual, yet it was noisier than ever.
With exams over, everyone was relaxed, and since it was a summer night, it was too hot to stay in the dorms. As a result, groups of people gathered on every patch of grass and in places where they could sit and chat. They were engaged in deep conversations or having wild fun.
Wandering alone, Qinglan felt like there was no escape.
"How could this be? Ever since Lin Xi left Liu Family Village, she has missed her for over a decade. Although she no longer remembers what she looked like as a child and has no idea what she looks like now, the longing has never ceased."
She had imagined countless scenarios of their reunion, which would surely be the most surprising and touching moment in the world. However, she forgot about her! It turned out that An Shaojie and Lin Xi had already reunited. She should have known that Lin Xi was also at A University, yet she had never sought her out or even called her once.
In their reunion scene, she was inexplicably absent!
Lin Xi! Lin Xi! Why? Did I do something wrong that made you not want to see me? Is it because of Brother Shaojie? Did I not take good care of him? It's not that I didn't take care of him; it's that I simply didn't know how to care for him. After silently accompanying him for so many years, was that not enough?
Indeed, there was nowhere to escape; everywhere she looked were couples or groups of friends, while only Qinglan stood alone, with nowhere to place her feet.
When she finally returned to her dormitory, she found Xu Wen standing downstairs. Even in the dark and from a distance, Qinglan recognized the figure in a short-sleeved shirt—she knew it must be a deep blue striped shirt—standing tall among the crowd; there was no doubt it was Xu Wen.
There were indeed many boys waiting downstairs for girls; some wore impatient expressions as they craned their necks looking up at the building, wondering why their girls hadn't come down yet. Others stood with their legs crossed, seemingly distracted. Some crowded at the entrance, peering inside while greeting familiar faces coming and going. Others casually leaned against walls with their hands in their pockets, staring down at the ground.
Only Xu Wen stood upright and quietly in a place that wasn't too remote or conspicuous.
Yes, he was quiet; no matter where he stood or how noisy it got around him, his presence resembled a silent landscape painting.
He possessed such an aura, such energy, and an insulated quality that kept all external noise at least a meter away from him.
He always managed to choose just the right spot where no one approached within half a meter of him. Yet that spot was never too far from the crowd to make him seem lonely.
Qinglan walked toward that figure who could always move her to tears and provide her warmth and stability.
He stepped forward when he saw Qinglan at that moment.
"What are you doing here?" Qinglan asked, sounding a bit silly.
She always seemed a bit foolish in front of him, asking the same silly question every time she saw him.
"Waiting for you." Those two words were simple, but they carried so much emotion.
"Oh." Qinglan replied lightly with a soft laugh.
"Well, you've been waiting for a long time, right? Didn't I tell you I was going to meet a friend tonight?" After a brief silence, Qinglan asked again.
"Yeah, I know. That's why I just arrived; I haven't been waiting long." He looked into her eyes, his smile warm and bright.
Then he handed Qinglan a plastic bag and said, "Take this."
"What is it?" Qinglan asked.
"Things for you to take on the train tomorrow—some snacks, medicine, water, and essential oil." The tall man stood in front of Qinglan, bending down to sort through the items in the plastic bag.
"You can buy these things on the train," Qinglan said, her eyes showing annoyance, affection, and gratitude. "I know, but some things can't be bought on the train, like essential oil. I bought these along with some snacks and water. Besides, what you buy is different from what I would buy." He smiled.
