If others feel a sense of sadness facing the upcoming graduation, the only one who does not feel that way is Jian Ming. Not only does he not feel sad, but he also feels anticipation; he hopes to graduate soon because he has plans and expectations for life after graduation. His life after graduation includes An Shaomin. However, when he sees Reiko going, he decides to join everyone for some fun. On the way to the KTV, Jian Ming walks up to Reiko and quietly asks, "Did you decide to come because you saw him?"
"Who?" Reiko looks around and replies, "You?"
Jian Ming lightly taps Reiko on the forehead and says, "Still trying to play coy in front of me? Of course, it's Li Xueshou. I've known for a long time that you like him."
Reiko lowers her head in silence.
"Why aren't you saying anything?" Jian Ming continues to ask.
"I am," Reiko finally nods in acknowledgment. She knows it's useless to hide things from Jian Ming; although he doesn't have romantic feelings for her, he has always been kind and caring towards her since childhood. Her emotions are like a barometer written all over her face—how could Jian Ming not know?
"But we know he has someone he likes," Jian Ming says.
"He has someone he likes?" Reiko is surprised. "Who?"
Since secretly liking him, Reiko hadn't thought about this question because she had hardly seen him interact frequently with any girl.
But then Reiko thinks again: what does it matter if he has someone he likes? She likes him, but it's just a crush; she understands in her heart that it will always be just a crush.
She follows him simply to see him.
"We don't know who it is; we only know that he has always liked a girl from another department."
Who it is, she actually doesn't need Jian Ming to answer.
"Oh," Reiko responds lightly.
"Are you okay?" Jian Ming notices that Reiko's expression seems a bit dazed and thinks she might be feeling sad.
"I'm fine," Reiko replies.
Yes, Reiko will be fine. Even if he has someone he likes, so what? Ever since that evening filled with golden light, when he told her that girls should be more refined, following him has become a habit for Reiko, and habits are not easy to change. She watches him play basketball, reads the books he has read, and takes the same classes as him. She has grown accustomed to his interests and whereabouts.
Loving someone is a quiet affair; it’s enough to see him happy! In the KTV room, the lights are dim, and several classmates are shouting into microphones.
Reiko sits in a corner chatting with other classmates, but her eyes never leave him. In such a dark and ambiguous atmosphere, no one notices the burning gaze she has for him, except for Jian Ming.
He hasn’t sung all night either; like her, he sits in a corner alone, holding a cup and slowly drinking beer.
As the night deepens, the previously loud voices in the room have quieted down a bit. After several bottles of beer, many people start to feel tipsy; most of the boys are somewhat drunk and begin to sprawl across the sofas.
He seems not to handle alcohol well; after a while, his face turns pale as he leans back on the sofa with his eyes closed. She keeps staring at him. Suddenly, he stands up from the sofa, covering his mouth, and rushes out of the KTV.
He is drunk and about to vomit.
But no one pays attention to him; the classmates chatting with Reiko have already moved on to talk with others.
Reiko hurriedly follows him outside.
Jian Ming, who hasn’t drunk or sung all night, watches Reiko run out.
He enters the restroom while she waits outside. After a while, he stumbles out. She wants to help him but hesitates. Suddenly, he stumbles as if about to fall; Reiko quickly steps forward to support his shoulder. He looks at her with bleary eyes but says nothing, allowing her to guide him outside. She leads him out of the KTV; he leans against her closely, making her heart race. Once outside on the street, the cold air hits them sharply, contrasting with the warm air inside the KTV room. Reiko shivers. He should feel even colder; those who have been drinking can easily sober up in the cold wind. He seems to regain some clarity as he struggles to sit on the steps in front of the KTV entrance but doesn’t push her away; it seems he still wants to rely on her.
She sits down beside him; he turns his face to look at her as if wanting to say something.
She dares not face him directly, sitting upright with her body straight and her face turned forward, staring at the distant flickering neon lights.
“Who are you? Do you like me?” he suddenly murmurs, looking at her.
Reiko doesn’t answer who she is but nods and says, “I do like you, but you’re drunk.”
He fell silent.
After a long time, Reiko finally dared to turn her head, only to find that he had already fallen asleep, seemingly in a deep slumber, breathing out with a hint of beer on his breath.
Reiko had never drunk alcohol and was not accustomed to any alcoholic taste, but that night, she found the scent of beer on his breath somewhat intoxicating, making her feel a little dizzy, yet it felt good and sweet.
He rested his hands on his knees, with his head resting on the palms of his hands. Reiko mimicked his position for a moment but found it awkward and uncomfortable. She then let his head rest on her knees, allowing him to sleep more comfortably.
At the same time, she took off her down jacket and draped it over him.
Just then, a figure behind her took off their coat and placed it over Reiko's shoulders.
Reiko did not turn around; she knew it was Jian Ming standing behind her.
Jian Ming observed the two figures sitting on the steps for a while before heading upstairs back to the private room.
After an unknown amount of time, he seemed to wake up, shifting slightly and turning his head in her direction. Seizing the opportunity, Reiko gently placed his head back onto his own knees and draped Jian Ming's coat over him before putting on her own jacket.
As soon as she stood up, she noticed him move his head and then lift it to look at her.
Reiko felt flustered, unsure if he recognized her or how he would react. In a hurry, she stumbled away, disappearing into the thick cold of the night. Li Xueshou watched her figure vanish and smiled softly. "Thank you for liking me, girl!" he said gently. "But I cannot like you back. So this is all I can give you. I will remember you, remember tonight. Goodbye, girl!"
