This is the end of Lin Xi's narration about Lu Chenyu.
As they descended the mountain, Lu Chenyu still held Lin Xi's hand. The two were chatting and laughing, feeling very happy. Lin Xi had completely let go of her reservations in front of Lu Chenyu. Lu Chenyu was the same, speaking to Lin Xi about their future life as if they were an old married couple.
When they reached a ditch that seemed a bit wide for Lin Xi to cross, she stopped and said to Lu Chenyu, "I can't get over it."
"How did you cross it when you came?" Lu Chenyu's words were casual, like his questions when he studied geological formations—seeking the essence of things rather than questioning her.
However, Lin Xi took it poorly. She pouted and turned her back to Lu Chenyu, ignoring him.
This was the first time Lin Xi had acted petulantly in front of him, and it was also the first time Lu Chenyu faced a girl being sulky. He rubbed his hands together, unsure of what to do.
"What's wrong? Lin Xi!" His tone remained the same as it had been in high school, with familiar expressions and voice.
Lin Xi turned around and punched Lu Chenyu lightly on the arm. "You silly goose, don't you know how to comfort a girl yet? Do you even know how to date?"
Lin Xi just wanted to act a little spoiled and have Lu Chenyu hug her for encouragement. On their way up the mountain, she had complained several times about how hard it was, but Lu Chenyu seemed oblivious, walking ahead and only turning back to help her at difficult spots. This left Lin Xi feeling somewhat frustrated.
Girls in relationships are usually delicate, with their boyfriends protecting them along the way. Yet here she was, clearly a delicate girl but having to take care of herself like a tough woman in front of him. Lin Xi felt a bit stifled.
Since their trip to Hainan, Lin Xi felt that her relationship with Lu Chenyu had become more intimate. Although nothing had happened between them, that night she had entrusted herself to him without reservation, indicating that she had already given him her heart.
Yet he still seemed oblivious.
Lin Xi felt a surge of resentment.
But Lin Xi did not know that Lu Chenyu had his own plans in mind.
When he chose geology, he essentially made a choice about his future life. From his parents, he saw the pattern of his future life, so he had been mentally preparing himself.
Thus, he felt conflicted about Lin Xi. He was reluctant to let her go, yet worried that she would suffer if she followed him. How could he not understand Lin Xi's tenderness? He just wanted to cultivate her courage to overcome difficulties, so that he could feel at ease letting her be with him.
However, looking at her hopeful eyes and shy face, Lu Chenyu felt a pang of pain in his heart. Suddenly, he scooped Lin Xi up and leaped.
"Ah... ah ah ah..."
Lin Xi lay in his arms, closed her eyes, and felt the cool breeze by her ears as her hair fluttered. She kept punching his chest with her fists.
When the wind by her ears stopped, she opened her eyes and found they were already on the other side of the ditch, with Lu Chenyu still holding her.
He lowered his head and gazed at her affectionately, so close that their faces were almost touching. They had been this intimate before; it wasn't fear of such closeness that made Lin Xi's heart race. Yet still, her heart fluttered, her face flushed, and her gaze found nowhere to hide. His head leaned down further, and his breath brushed against her face, ear, and neck—ticklish yet excitingly tense.
She could hear his heartbeat, thumping in rhythm with the rise and fall of his chest, echoing in her ear as it pounded against him.
His head continued to lean down, the warmth of his breath making her cheeks burn and her heart race. His lips brushed against hers.
She closed her eyes again, thinking he would kiss deeply. Her heart raced as she awaited that thrilling moment—the moment that would make her heart skip a beat, the moment when her mind would go blank. Oh! No, her mind was already blank; she only felt a wave of warmth stirring within her and a pair of soft lips gently licking at hers. She slightly parted her lips, ready to welcome a deeper kiss from him.
But after lightly touching her lips once, he stopped there, motionless.
After a long time, Lin Xi opened her eyes to find that he had slowly pulled away from her lips.
"Lin Xi! No matter how much I love you, it never feels enough, yet I dare not love you too deeply. I fear falling into despair. Every time I miss you, my heart feels like it's sinking into an endless abyss of darkness," Lu Chenyu quietly told himself.
Later, on the way down the mountain, Lin Xi felt a bit gloomy. Although Lu Chenyu held her hand tightly, as if afraid she might suddenly disappear, Lin Xi could no longer be as happy as she was on the way up. She didn't understand why Lu Chenyu suddenly seemed hesitant to get close to her.
As they neared the foot of the mountain, Lin Xi shared a dream with Lu Chenyu.
"Last night, I had a dream where I walked into a castle filled with blooming flowers and saw a prince playing the piano in the hall..."
In reality, this was not a dream Lin Xi had last night; it was merely a scene she had imagined while descending the mountain.
Perhaps every girl in love feels this way, wishing to be a princess waiting for a piano-playing prince in a castle.
Lin Xi, who longed for romantic love, was no exception. Although it didn't necessarily mean she wanted the person she liked to be a prince or that she viewed herself as a princess in love.
However, words spoken without intent can carry weight for those who listen, especially for young boys and girls in love who are particularly sensitive. A single phrase or action can lead them to overthink. On one hand, they desire stable and comfortable love; on the other hand, they crave constant romantic gestures from their partner. Yet, in their pursuit of romance, they often disrupt the stability they seek within their hearts. Thus, love is filled with contradictions and anxieties.
After hearing Lin Xi's words, Lu Chenyu became upset and sensitively asked her:
"In your mind, do you prefer boys like that piano-playing prince? But someone like me—a rough guy—can never be a prince! You knew what kind of person I was when you first met me."
Lin Xi got angry. "I was just saying it casually; why do you have to think so much?" A perfectly romantic moment was ruined by their inexplicable emotions. Lin Xi let go of Lu Chenyu's hand and angrily ran down the mountain alone. Lu Chenyu stood there dejectedly for a long time. On the way back to the city, Lin Xi remained angry with Lu Chenyu, sitting by the window and staring outside without saying a word.
