"No matter how bright the night is, as the distance grows, there will eventually come a point where shadows cannot be seen, and everything can disappear into the vastness of the night."
Qinglan ultimately understood that even though she always occupied a place in his heart, as long as he distanced himself from her, he would eventually vanish from her sight.
After returning to her dormitory, Qinglan called Xu Wen to inform him that she was back in her room. On the other end of the line, Xu Wen remained silent for a long time. Sitting in the KTV booth, he appeared to be engaging and entertaining everyone as usual, but he was actually calculating the time it would take for Qinglan to return or reach her dormitory.
When Qinglan's call came through, he glanced at his watch and deduced that she was walking back to her dormitory at a leisurely pace.
After dropping An Shaojie off at the school gate, she did not return; she must have gone back to the dormitory with him.
Upon returning to her dormitory, her voice on the phone sounded so low that Xu Wen felt a pang of heartache for Qinglan.
"Hello!" Qinglan called out on the phone.
Beep beep beep... only the busy tone remained on the line.
Qinglan held the receiver up to her eyes and wondered, "What’s going on? Xu Wen rarely acts like this; he almost never hangs up on my calls first. He also never gets drunk. Could there be a problem with the phone?"
Sighing, she decided not to dwell on it. After hanging up, Qinglan fell back into her earlier state of disappointment.
It wasn't entirely disappointment, though; after all, her relationship with An Shaojie had progressed significantly, which made her feel a little excited.
However, this significant step in their relationship also left Qinglan feeling somewhat uneasy.
In the past, he had harbored resentment towards her and had always been indifferent. Seeing her with Xu Wen only intensified his hatred, indicating that he cared about her deep down.
But now, their relationship had returned to a calm state. Overnight, it seemed he no longer harbored any hatred towards her.
Did the absence of hate mean there was no love either?
With an anxious heart, Qinglan sat restlessly alone in her dormitory, gazing at the gradually sinking moonlight outside. She felt a twinge of fear.
Cocooned in her blanket, she leaned against the bed railing and drifted off into a hazy sleep. Suddenly, a series of urgent ringing jolted Qinglan awake from her drowsy slumber. In a flurry, she grabbed her phone only to realize it wasn't her phone ringing. It was the IC card phone in the corner that was ringing.
Qinglan got out of bed and walked over to pick up the phone by the door.
"Lanlan, I'm downstairs."
Whose familiar voice is that? An Shaojie? Xu Wen? Qinglan shook her groggy head. Although she didn't drink much tonight, just one or two cups, the effects of the alcohol still made her feel a bit dizzy, causing her to mix up the voices.
But the way "Lanlan" was called broke Qinglan's heart. Xu Wen had never called her Lanlan; she only remembered An Shaojie calling her that earlier.
"Brother Shaojie," Qinglan called out, rubbing her eyes in confusion.
"Lanlan, are you half asleep? It's Xu Wen, I'm downstairs. Can you come down for a moment?"
Once she confirmed it was Xu Wen, tears of grievance streamed down Qinglan's cheeks.
She hurriedly rushed downstairs, still bleary-eyed.
In the deep night, the world was silent; the area in front of the Girls' Dormitory was empty, devoid of the daytime hustle and bustle. Everything around seemed to be in a dreamlike state, where even the lightest footsteps might disturb them.
The night breeze tousled Xu Wen's slightly curly hair as he stood next to a small tree that had just sprouted new buds, holding a bag in his hand while the breeze lifted the corners of his blue suit.
As soon as Xu Wen came into Qinglan's sight, she dashed towards him in a state of disappointment and wrapped her arms around his neck, sobbing softly.
"What's wrong? Are you scared being alone in the dorm?" Xu Wen asked, holding the bag with one hand while patting her back with the other.
"No," Qinglan replied.
"Then you must be hungry?" Xu Wen asked with a gentle smile.
Speaking of hunger, Qinglan's stomach indeed growled. She was feeling a bit hungry.
"How did you know?" Qinglan released her hold on Xu Wen and looked at him with playful eyes.
Xu Wen playfully tapped her cute nose and said, "I haven't taken my eyes off you all night. I saw what you ate and drank during dinner; you didn't have any main course, right?"
"Yes," Qinglan nodded vigorously.
"And during karaoke, you didn't eat anything either; your soul wasn't even in your body, silly girl."
Only then did Xu Wen open the plastic bag in his hand and glanced around before saying, "Come on, let's sit over there and eat."
Qinglan and Xu Wen walked to a nearby step and sat down. She began to enjoy her food.
He sat beside her, smiling as he watched her eat, thinking to himself, "What kind of girl is this? She approaches love with the same seriousness and dedication as she does her studies. Because of a childhood romance, she has never let go. Even when such a beautiful love is right in front of her, she remains fixated on her first love, even if it leaves her deeply hurt and full of scars."
At that moment, in the stillness of the night where everything was asleep and silent, ten meters behind them, under the small tree where Xu Wen had just stood, there was another tall and thin figure watching their backs, lost in thought.
There was no one around; aside from the twinkling stars in the night sky and the moon playfully hiding behind the clouds, no living creature could see the figure beneath the tree.
After standing for a while, the figure quietly disappeared.
As if he had never been there! As if he had never witnessed that scene!
When An Shaojie returned to his dormitory, he once again plunged himself into infinite sadness.
No one knew that before this, he had hidden under his blanket, biting down on it as he suppressed his tears.
Lin Xi had become a memory he could not recall or grasp, a painful first love that had already passed away.
He understood that he and Lin Xi could never return to their childhood. Even if lost things from childhood were recovered, they would never be the same as before.
His feelings for her had been one-sided all these years!
For his lost first love from childhood to the present day, he curled up in his blanket and let out the most painful cries of his life. Each cry was so suppressed that it left him breathless, causing his throat to twist and turn without being able to produce any sound. His heart ached so much that he could only curl up his frail body under the blanket. No one knew that after his suffering, he made a significant decision for the first time in his life—one that caused him deep pain yet also strengthened his resolve.
