After the roommates left, the dormitory felt especially quiet, and at the same time, Qinglan felt particularly helpless. She leaned her head against the cold iron railing painted green, hoping it would help her feel more awake. With her eyes half-closed, she occasionally forced herself to open them and glanced at the phone in her hand.
At that moment, the sound she longed for most was the ringtone of the phone she held, as it represented that she was not alone but cared for by someone.
She desperately needed that care.
Soon, the phone rang loudly, instantly filling the quiet dormitory with life. Qinglan did not rush to answer the call because she needed to hear that ringtone so much, and subconsciously, she really wanted to see who was calling.
So she picked up the phone and looked closely; it was Xu Wen calling.
Xu Wen's call certainly brought a sense of calm to Qinglan's heart, but she still felt a bit disappointed.
Xu Wen said he was downstairs and asked her to come down to get the tickets.
After taking the tickets, Qinglan stood in front of Xu Wen.
It had been a long time since she had looked at him this closely.
He had lost a lot of weight; his eyes were still bright but now carried layers of hesitation.
Qinglan bit her lip, speechless.
She didn't know when it started, but she no longer felt as confident and carefree in front of him as before; she seemed much more restrained now.
"You should go back and rest. Don't worry; as long as someone is here, there's nothing that can't be solved," Xu Wen said.
What a familiar phrase; it was something she often heard him say before. Back then, he always said it with humor and confidence. At that time, Qinglan often felt clumsy in front of him and would hesitate when faced with tricky problems. He would stand in front of her, smiling confidently and saying, "No rush; there's always a way out. As long as someone is here, there's nothing that can't be solved."
Back then, as long as he was by her side, Qinglan felt that nothing was frightening and nothing was unsolvable; she always felt secure in her heart.
Standing in front of him again today and hearing those words, Qinglan finally eased her tension and anxiety, smiling shyly.
"You should go back and rest. I'll go find him," Xu Wen repeated.
At the entrance of the dormitory corridor, Qinglan turned back and smiled brightly, recalling the moments spent with Xu Wen.
"Go inside, I'll take care of everything," Xu Wen waved to her.
It was only after Qinglan entered that Xu Wen turned to leave.
After parting from Qinglan, Xu Wen began searching for An Shaojie. He also went to the house rented by Qinglan and An Shaojie. He already knew where they lived. An Shaojie was indeed not there.
Later, he visited several places, following a route almost identical to the one Qinglan had taken. There was no place they frequently visited that Xu Wen was unaware of.
He found no trace of An Shaojie in all the places he knew. He even called An Shaojie's phone, but it was also turned off.
"How can this be? A guy with a girlfriend turning off his phone for such a long time without contacting her? Doesn't he worry about her? Even if he doesn't worry about her, he should think about how she must be worried about him!" Xu Wen couldn't hold back his frustration and felt almost frantic.
Feeling somewhat dejected, Xu Wen walked towards Qinglan's dormitory, realizing she hadn't had dinner yet. For the first time, he recognized that sometimes, despite someone's presence, effort, and sincerity, there are problems that cannot be solved. He felt a bit discouraged and suffocated.
"What kind of person is he? Why does someone as smart as Qinglan have to encounter him?" Xu Wen felt a sense of sorrow for Qinglan.
As he walked, he inadvertently looked up and noticed a patch of grass in the distance. Suddenly, Xu Wen remembered seeing Qinglan lying there one night. Of course, she wouldn't go to such a secluded spot alone; An Shaojie must have been there that night too.
With this thought in mind, Xu Wen rushed towards that location.
Sure enough, An Shaojie was leisurely lying there with his eyes closed.
Xu Wen could hardly contain himself and wanted to kick him. But he held back and stood beside him, looking down at him.
After standing there for quite a while, An Shaojie finally sensed someone was there. He opened his eyes, glanced at Xu Wen, saw who it was, and closed his eyes again.
Xu Wen grabbed his arm and pulled him up. "Get up."
An Shaojie shrugged off his hand and angrily shouted, "What do you want?"
"What do you think you're doing?" The usually gentle and refined Xu Wen was provoked by An Shaojie's indifferent attitude towards everyone. He shouted back angrily, "Qinglan has been looking for you all afternoon."
An Shaojie stood up, sneering as he said, "Oh, I knew it. You would come to me for something. The famous scholar Xu Wen, who else could possibly get him to help besides that woman?"
Xu Wen was speechless but still patiently replied, "An Shaojie, what kind of attitude is this? What woman? Qinglan is your girlfriend. You haven't cared for her or looked after her, letting others run away with her, and you aren't even ashamed or reflective about it?"
"Hahaha..." An Shaojie laughed loudly, "How ridiculous. My girlfriend can't find me but easily finds you instead? Since you can be summoned at any time, why do you need to look for me?" An Shaojie nearly shouted in anger.
"She came to me because she couldn't find you." Seeing An Shaojie getting angry out of jealousy, Xu Wen felt a bit relieved, indicating that he did care about Qinglan, so his tone softened as he explained.
An Shaojie didn't listen to Xu Wen's explanation and turned to leave.
Just as he took a step, he froze.
Because standing in front of him was Qinglan.
It turned out that after Qinglan returned to the dormitory and waited for news from Xu Wen and An Shaojie without any updates, she had been wondering where An Shaojie might have gone. After checking all the places he usually visited without success, she suddenly thought of this rarely visited patch of grass and came to take a look.
Unexpectedly, not only was An Shaojie here, but Xu Wen was also present. Qinglan realized that Xu Wen probably thought of this place too because he had found her here that night.
In the familiar lawn with familiar faces, recalling what had happened on this patch of grass made Qinglan feel embarrassed.
Because she hadn't expected Xu Wen to be here as well, she felt even more awkward and didn't know what to say. It was Xu Wen who spoke first: "You came too?" His expression was calm. Perhaps to avoid suspicion, Qinglan only nodded slightly at Xu Wen without responding and directly walked up to An Shaojie, saying, "My grandfather is unwell. My father called and said I must go back tomorrow to see him one last time. I hope you can accompany me home."
