"Yes." The girl said, "Hey, why aren't you leaving with your boyfriend? I just saw him when I got off at the station. He walked past me without saying a word, and he looked kind of unhappy. You two aren't fighting anymore, are you?"
So he did come by! He really just left!
"Oh! Oh!" Qinglan replied, "We had a little argument earlier, but I..."
"But I later bought some things at the supermarket by the community entrance." The girl raised her shopping bag. "He’s probably already gone back to your school; it's been a while."
"Oh." Qinglan responded absentmindedly.
Just as Qinglan was about to turn and leave, the girl stopped her again and asked, "Are you going to continue renting this place next semester?"
The girl's question caught Qinglan off guard. Continue renting? She hadn't thought about that yet.
Why wouldn't she rent? Was this how it ended between her and An Shaojie?
Rent? But would he even come back here?
Qinglan took a long moment before answering the girl, "I don't know yet; I need to go back and discuss it with my boyfriend."
"Oh, okay." The girl smiled. "Because after the New Year, a few of my classmates are coming to Beijing to look for jobs, and they asked me to help find a place. If your place isn't available for rent, could you let me know?"
After agreeing with the girl, Qinglan hurried back to school.
Well, at least she knew he was still at school and that he hadn't gone home in the afternoon. Qinglan had to check his dormitory once.
Once back at school, Qinglan went straight to An Shaojie's dorm building.
After asking the uncle at the Conveyance Room to call him, Qinglan stood quietly by the roadside waiting for him.
After a long wait, someone came down from his dormitory to respond to Qinglan: "The Class Leader isn't in the dorm right now."
"Do you know where he went?" Qinglan asked.
"I don't know. He hasn't come back since he finished his exam this morning."
Qinglan was startled again; it seemed that after finishing the exam and having a meal, he went to his rented place.
"Do you know when he'll be back?" Qinglan continued to ask.
"I don't know about that either. He's been coming back to the dormitory very late these days."
"Do you know when he will go home?" Qinglan asked again.
After all, their classmates had been discussing the little matters between her and An Shaojie since the beginning of their freshman year, and the topic had never ceased. Even when she was dating Xu Wen, others seemed more interested in her relationship with An Shaojie. Their comments often sparked imaginations and speculations, leading to many possibilities and predictions, which kept them quite entertained.
Therefore, Qinglan wasn't afraid of being laughed at anymore and decided to keep asking playfully.
The boy joked, "Hey, shouldn't we be asking you this question? We need to ask you about the time when the class monitor wore open-crotch pants! Even if we want him to join us for a meal, we have to borrow you first!"
Qinglan scoffed lightly and stopped asking further. She turned around and waved goodbye to the boy as she headed back to her dormitory.
The next day, Qinglan sat in her dormitory waiting for Lin Xi to finish her exam so they could go out for a meal together.
It was the last day before the holiday, which felt almost like a holiday itself. The number of staff in the cafeteria had been reduced by half, and there were far fewer dishes and other staple foods than usual. So Qinglan and Lin Xi decided to go out for a meal instead.
Ah! These two childhood best friends actually had to wait until An Shaojie went missing before they could arrange to have a meal together.
Just as mealtime arrived, Qinglan received a call from Xu Wen. The first thing he asked was, "Have you been in touch with An Shaojie?"
"No," Qinglan replied, thinking he was still concerned about that issue.
"Well, let's go out to eat. The cafeteria food is almost gone," Xu Wen paused.
This was the first time Xu Wen invited Qinglan to dinner since Qinglan and An Shaojie got together.
"Okay," Qinglan replied, "but we need to wait for Lin Xi."
"Alright, you call her and tell her to meet us at the school gate. We'll wait for her there," Xu Wen said.
After Qinglan came down, she received a call from Lin Xi asking where she was.
On the phone, they agreed to meet at the school gate.
When Qinglan and Xu Wen arrived at the school gate, Lin Xi was already standing there.
"Ah, long time no see, handsome Xu," Lin Xi joked as soon as she saw Xu Wen next to Qinglan.
Xu Wen responded a bit shyly to Lin Xi.
"Where's Su Hailu?" Qinglan asked when she saw that only Lin Xi was there.
Indeed, earlier on the phone, Qinglan had asked Lin Xi to bring Su Hailu along since Xu Wen was treating. Qinglan knew that Lin Xi and Su Hailu were almost inseparable, especially when someone was treating to a meal. As good friends, Lin Xi usually brought Su Hailu along, and Su Hailu would do the same for Lin Xi. So Qinglan directly told Lin Xi to have Su Hailu come with her.
"Oh, her," Lin Xi said while fixing her hair as she walked with Qinglan and Xu Wen. "She's been acting mysteriously these past few days and hasn't been hanging out with me. I just called her, and she already has plans to eat with someone else, so she won't be coming with me."
"Oh," Qinglan replied absentmindedly.
"But it seems like she's been quite busy lately. I heard she's planning to go abroad next year, so she's been really focused on that. She's enrolled in an English training class outside and is preparing for the TOEFL," Lin Xi added.
Qinglan responded with another absentminded "oh."
"This guy is really determined. It seems he doesn't plan to go home during the winter break and is staying at school to review for exams," Lin Xi continued.
Qinglan and Xu Wen listened without much concern.
After dinner, Qinglan and Lin Xi decided to go shopping, while Xu Wen bid them farewell.
As Xu Wen reached a bus stop at the school gate, he had just walked past the back of the sign when he suddenly heard a familiar voice. He quickly turned around to look for the source of the sound.
However, there was no one familiar under the bus stop.
A bus was parked at the sign, and people were lining up to board.
He didn't see any familiar figures in the queue either.
When Xu Wen's gaze swept inside the bus, he noticed a shadow flicker past the window and then settle into a seat somewhere.
Xu Wen felt puzzled.
It was clearly Su Hailu's figure.
But that couldn't be right; he distinctly heard a male voice, a familiar deep and cold voice that could only belong to An Shaojie. Xu Wen hurriedly took a few steps forward and leaned against the window to look inside. But the bus had already started moving.
