"A bucket of popcorn, a bottle of drink, hmm..."
As Lu Chenyu stood in front of the beautiful Ticket Clerk in her work uniform, pointing at these items with one hand while holding a black leather wallet for the movie tickets, Lin Xi had already thrown away any dissatisfaction and unhappiness she felt earlier.
She stood beside Lu Chenyu, lightly tugging at the corner of his shirt with one hand, a satisfied smile on her face as she looked up at his tall and handsome figure. In her eyes, there was even a soft glow of admiration, like a cherished girl adoring her idol.
"Do you need anything else?" He rested his hand on her shoulder, gazing intently at her.
"Um, I don't need anything else." In Lin Xi's eyes, as long as Lu Chenyu was with her, what else could she possibly need? Nothing at all.
After thinking for a moment and scanning the snack counter behind the Ticket Clerk, she said, "Let's get another bag of sunflower seeds." He then lowered his head to take money from his wallet.
The pretty Ticket Clerk smiled slightly, "Sure."
"What about you? Why don't you have anything?" Lin Xi tugged at his sleeve and asked, noticing that everything bought was for her.
After paying and putting away the change, he wrapped his arm around Lin Xi's shoulder and walked toward the waiting area.
Since there were still more than ten minutes until the movie started, they sat down in a row of plastic chairs.
Lin Xi held the popcorn in her arms while holding the drink with her other hand. Lu Chenyu twisted open the bag of sunflower seeds.
Sitting in the chair, Lu Chenyu continued to gently hold Lin Xi's shoulder. Although there was still a hint of lingering melancholy on his face, the way he looked down at Lin Xi eating popcorn was filled with deep affection and sincerity, regardless of how others perceived it.
Lin Xi pinched a piece of popcorn and tossed it into Lu Chenyu's mouth. Her eyes sparkled with sweetness, and the feeling was palpable, as if the air itself carried a sweet fragrance.
Lu Chenyu opened his mouth to catch the popcorn, tightening his embrace slightly so that her body almost pressed against his chest.
"You don't eat, you eat." He reached out to smooth her fine hair at the temples and brushed away the strands that had blown to the corner of her mouth.
He glanced up at the end of the corridor, where many people were coming and going. The door at the end of the corridor had hardly been closed, and a cool breeze blew in.
He took off his scarf and wrapped it around Lin Xi.
Lin Xi smiled sweetly, "Every time I'm with you, I feel like a clumsy bear. No matter how many clothes I wear, you always think I’m underdressed."
Lu Chenyu smiled lightly; although his smile was subtle, it was filled with deep affection. His gaze on Lin Xi seemed to have a fiery glow, making her face feel a bit warm, and her heart raced faster.
"No matter the season, your hand in mine always feels cold. How can I relax? In winter, you need to dress warmly. To me, even if you look like a clumsy bear, you're still the most beautiful bear."
Lin Xi's heart trembled. Although it was just a common expression of concern between couples, it made her feel a bit flustered.
After a while, the movie started.
That night they watched an American romance film titled "First Love Memories," which had a nostalgic feel and a touching story. Lin Xi found herself in tears.
Throughout the movie, Lin Xi almost curled up in Lu Chenyu's arms.
She was moved both by the realistic and touching plot and by her emotions. Even after stepping out of the dim theater, she seemed unable to escape from the story, still immersed in deep sorrow.
As they exited, she inadvertently exclaimed, "Oh no! I thought it was nighttime; turns out it's still daytime."
He held her close and looked down the corridor with a gentle smile in his eyes. A gust of cold wind blew from the end of the hallway, causing Lin Xi to shiver.
He hurriedly held her tighter in his arms.
It was not wrong to describe the woman in love before him as a fool.
"Fool, we just went out this morning, and we haven't even had lunch yet," Lu Chenyu gently tapped her nose with his index finger.
Looking at the girl in front of him, during high school, she had seemed so intelligent in his eyes. Oh no, she was sharp; back then, she was rational, calm, mature, and even shrewd to the point where he felt somewhat inferior.
At that time, he was carefree, living without any plans, studying without any structure or strategy. He admired her and wished he could handle his affairs with such calmness like she did.
Now, like a silly little woman, her eyes held nothing but the person she loved and her love.
He lowered his head, his nose brushing against her soft, shiny black hair. He lightly inhaled her scent and found it hard to restrain himself from saying what he had buried deep in his heart: "Lin Xi, I love you so much and want to hold you like this forever."
But he held back and merely let his face glide gently over her hair.
"Where are we going to eat?" Lin Xi asked eagerly. It was not easy for them to meet after such a long time; how could she let him go easily? She wanted to spend the whole day with him.
Just as he was about to respond, suddenly his phone rang in his pocket.
After glancing at the caller ID, he removed his hand from her shoulder and stepped a meter away before answering the call.
The conversation didn't last long, but for Lin Xi, it felt like an eternity.
Since he stood right at the exit while taking the call, Lin Xi unconsciously moved her feet towards him.
As soon as she reached his side, his phone call ended. His expression was calm, yet it seemed to conceal some kind of hidden pain.
"Is something wrong?" Lin Xi cautiously asked, testing the waters.
"Um, just a little something. Lin Xi, I probably can't join you for dinner. I have to leave first," he said, his tone slow but his mood urgent, conveying a sense of immediacy.
Before Lin Xi could prepare herself mentally, he had already turned and headed downstairs.
Although he ruffled her hair as he left, there was warmth in his affection and a sense of apology.
Yet Lin Xi felt as if something had suddenly yanked at her heart, leaving her somewhat uncomfortable.
After all, they had come out together; even if they couldn't play until dark, they should at least return home together. What kind of reasoning was it to just leave her alone halfway?
He hadn't walked far when Lin Xi suddenly felt frantic and rushed down the stairs, standing at the entrance of the cinema's lobby searching for his figure.
No matter where he went, she was willing to follow him. No matter what he needed to do, she wanted to do it alongside him.
But he moved quickly, and the people on the street came and went—neither too many nor too few—sparse enough that there was no trace of him.
When she left home in the morning, the weather had been clear. Although thin lead clouds occasionally appeared from nowhere to obscure the sun that was struggling to shine through, the sunlight still felt warm on her skin. Yet in the blink of an eye, the sky became filled with thick lead clouds, heavy and dense, pressing down above her head. Standing on the street where she could no longer see his figure, Lin Xi felt a bit numb and tearless. When did she become so sentimental? When did she start to enjoy being unreasonable? When did she become so anxious about losing him?
