Xu Wen slapped his forehead, "How foolish, I should have thought of this earlier."
Originally someone who was calm in emergencies, unflustered by the world, and rarely panicked in difficult situations, tonight he felt like a person with low intelligence and no logical reasoning, as if he had left his heart behind. He couldn't believe he hadn't figured out such a simple logic.
Xiang Yuanqiu and Wang Wei had not arranged their accommodations; how could she possibly have gone back to the dormitory first?
Without hesitation, he quickly turned around and walked back. There was no time to waste; he drove his family's car out. They lived on campus, so he soon exited the school grounds.
What was going on? He slapped the steering wheel, wondering why he felt such an urgent need to find her tonight, why he wanted to see her.
However, after driving outside the campus, he realized he didn't know where Qinglan's rental place was.
He hurriedly flipped through his contacts and found Qinglan's phone number. He dialed it, but the phone rang for a long time without anyone answering.
Xu Wen's heart grew even more anxious.
He suddenly regretted everything he had done tonight.
For example, he shouldn't have given up his seat to that girl classmate of hers at the beginning because he noticed that she hadn't talked much with that girl tonight. It seemed their relationship wasn't as good as he had imagined.
He should have sat next to her; hadn't he always sat beside her? Tonight was truly strange; he actually thought about trying to please that classmate of hers. Xu Wen had always been proud and aloof; when had he ever tried to please others? Sigh! He just wanted to see her in a better mood and thought pleasing her classmate would help.
The second mistake was letting her go with her classmate. Sigh! Even though she was her classmate, why did it feel like he couldn't trust anyone with her?
No matter who he handed her over to, he felt uneasy.
He once let go and handed her over to An Shaojie simply because she loved him as if he were her life; he had no choice but to let go. Yet even An Shaojie, the boy she loved dearly, didn't put him at ease.
But tonight...
Xu Wen regretted hitting his head repeatedly.
The third mistake—sigh, how foolish of him—why didn't he just ask Jiang Liuying where her rental place was earlier?
Xu Wen picked up his phone again and called Qinglan once more, but still no one answered.
After hanging up from Qinglan's call, he quickly flipped through his contacts again and finally found a number related to Qinglan.
He dialed the number.
Hu Jiao'er, who was just walking out of the study room with Zhou Xiaochuan, was taken aback when she received Xu Wen's call.
Since they were both class officers, they had each other's phone numbers, but they had hardly ever contacted each other via phone. So Hu Jiao'er picked up the phone and exclaimed, "Hello, Xu the Handsome! What a rare caller! What do you need?"
Her tone was typical of a straightforward girl from Northwest China.
"Do you know where Qinglan's rental house is?" Xu Wen didn't bother with pleasantries or small talk.
"Ah, so you really came for Qinglan," Hu Jiao'er said, glancing sideways at Zhou Xiaochuan and lamenting to herself.
"Stop wasting time and tell me quickly." Xu Wen on the other end was already anxious and had lost his gentlemanly demeanor.
Moreover, when he was dating Qinglan, her group of close friends never treated him like a gentleman. Although he had always been polite and courteous to them, they never held back in teasing him. In fact, Xu Wen used to enjoy this attention and felt somewhat proud because it meant that Qinglan's friends accepted him. Later, when Qinglan started dating An Shaojie, their attitude towards him was not as friendly; they rarely joked about him in front of An Shaojie for fear of upsetting him.
Even now, although things between him and Qinglan were no longer as they used to be, her friends still liked to tease him by bringing up Qinglan, which made An Shaojie somewhat displeased with him and frustrated with Qinglan. In short, An Shaojie often felt jealous of him and would take it out on Qinglan.
So at this moment, Xu Wen wasn't going to be polite with Hu Jiao'er either.
"I don't know," after a long pause, Hu Jiao'er finally managed to say that.
Before she could finish her sentence, Xu Wen hung up. He no longer had the patience to waste time with her.
Early May in Beijing wasn't very hot, but Xu Wen was already sweating from anxiety. He took off his blue suit jacket and tossed it onto the back seat, loosening his tie.
After thinking for a moment, he redialed Hu Jiao'er's number.
Among Qinglan's friends, he only had Hu Jiao'er's number saved due to work reasons.
"Who knows where she rented her place?" As soon as the call connected, he didn't even greet her.
At this point, Hu Jiao'er seemed to realize that Xu Wen was different from before; his voice was so urgent that she stopped joking around: "Mengmeng knows; she has been to her place once."
"What’s up with you, Xu Wen? You're looking for her so urgently; did something happen to Lanlan?" Hu Jiao'er asked next.
"Send me Shen Xiaomeng's number." Xu Wen did not answer her question.
"Oh, okay." Hearing Xu Wen's urgent voice, Hu Jiao'er also became serious and anxious.
Before Hu Jiao'er could send her text message, Xu Wen had already called Hao Chuanze.
"Hao Chuanze, quickly call that person in your family and ask her where Qinglan's rented house is?" There were no pleasantries, only a hurried tone.
Hao Chuanze was with Lin Xi and Yao Mengni, helping Yao Mengni find a place to stay.
When he received Xu Wen's call, he was surprised because he had just shared his number at the dinner table that night, and now it was being dialed.
Moreover, it sounded quite urgent.
"What's going on?" Hao Chuanze's voice was somewhat casual. He knew Xu Wen liked Qinglan, but they had just parted ways; it shouldn't be that hard for him to let go, even though he had drunk a bit today.
"It's urgent; please help me ask." Hao Chuanze wasn't particularly close to Xu Wen, being classmates from different classes, so although he felt anxious inside, he tried to maintain his composure and be polite.
"Okay." After Hao Chuanze agreed, Xu Wen hung up the phone.
Looking at the text message from Hu Jiao'er, Xu Wen felt much more at ease.
This girl from the Northwest was indeed very smart; she directly asked Shen Xiaomeng for the address and then forwarded the message Shen Xiaomeng sent her. Xu Wen drove swiftly toward Qinglan's rental house. Soon after, he received a text message from Hao Chuanze, glancing at it; it was the same address that Hu Jiao'er had sent.
