"Take a good rest. No matter what decision you make, I will be with you," Xu Wen said, pulling out his phone to check the time; it was already twelve o'clock. He turned to glance at the other bed in the hospital room, which was empty. "If I go back now, I'll definitely disturb others. I'll just make do on this bed tonight. You don't mind, do you?" Seeing her stubbornly pouting, he couldn't help but smile.
Perhaps he was tired; before Qinglan could respond, Xu Wen had already taken off his shoes and lay down on the bed with his clothes on. He adjusted the pillow, which was a bit too high, and placed his hands behind his head while crossing his legs. He stared at the ceiling, looking relaxed and casual, embodying a homey attitude.
This was the first time Qinglan had seen him in such an unrefined and ungraceful manner. For a moment, she forgot about her worries and couldn't help but smile.
The next day, Qinglan was discharged from the hospital but took a leave of absence when she returned to school and did not go to work. After resting for a few days, Xu Wen once again sought Qinglan's opinion—not exactly seeking her opinion but rather persuading her or directly taking her to the hospital as per his agreement with the doctor.
That day, when Qinglan said no, Xu Wen thought it was just a moment of emotional impulse. He believed she was upset with An Shaojie and had said that out of spite. After a few days, he thought she would have calmed down and come to terms with it.
She was originally a girl who rarely got angry and was quite understanding!
With only a year left until graduation, what would happen if she didn't terminate the pregnancy? As her belly grew larger, how would she face her classmates and teachers? Not to mention that she still needed to complete her internship this semester to earn credits for her graduation thesis; otherwise, she wouldn't even receive her diploma.
Moreover, if people at the internship site found out about it, word would spread quickly. The social pressure would weigh heavily on the school, and given the school's existing regulations and discipline regarding such matters, they would not tolerate it. If it became a widespread issue within the school, it would lead to serious consequences.
Xu Wen clearly remembered that a few years ago, there had been a similar situation at school where a girl got pregnant before graduation; both she and the boy involved were expelled. Even more severe cases occurred years ago when a couple renting an apartment outside were reported by classmates and subsequently expelled. In recent years, due to changing social attitudes, the school had become more lenient regarding couples renting apartments together; however, they remained strict about pregnancies before graduation.
Xu Wen thought that if they quietly terminated the pregnancy now, it would only take one day. Only he and Qinglan would know about it—quietly done—allowing Qinglan to continue living her life as a student preparing for graduation without any disruptions.
To his surprise, Qinglan still responded with those two words: "I'm not going."
Xu Wen stood at her dormitory door, staring blankly at her back as she faced away from him, looking stubborn. He found himself at a loss for words.
"You are so foolish!" Xu Wen stood between the two door frames, a beam of morning light shining down from above his head, landing on the ground not far in front of him, then bending and reflecting onto Qinglan's back, like a ray of light illuminating her.
Qinglan sat down by the bed, lowering her head but still stubbornly keeping her lips sealed.
"What will you do if you don't terminate the pregnancy? Have you thought this through? Soon everyone will know; what then? This is a life, not just a birthday gift left over from a romance." He paused, wanting to say something more, but after opening his lips a few times, he didn't know how to continue, standing there almost stamping his feet in frustration.
"Precisely because it is a life and not a gift, I cannot just discard it like I would throw away a present." After holding back for a long time, she finally managed to say this with determination, giving the impression of someone gritting their teeth, instantly transforming the originally gentle and composed girl into one who was resolute and stubborn.
"But you are still a student. How will you support it? And if the school finds out about this, what will happen? You know the School Rules and Regulations; you've heard about past Senior Sisters who were expelled. What do you think?" Xu Wen nearly hit his own head in frustration. He never expected that the usually gentle Qinglan could be as stubborn as a bull.
"I won't let the school find out," she said fiercely, tilting her head.
"Not let the school find out? As the child grows, everyone will see it. How can you hide it from the school?" Xu Wen's voice rose in urgency and helplessness.
"What do you mean by not letting the school know?" Suddenly, a cheerful voice came from the staircase.
Xu Wen was startled and glanced at Qinglan before quickly turning to walk out of the dormitory. He saw the young assistant who had accompanied him to take Qinglan to the hospital last time swaying up the stairs, just reaching the entrance of Qinglan's dormitory building.
Qinglan was also surprised by the voice; she stood up from the bed and looked toward the door.
"Oh, it's you," Xu Wen greeted the Research Assistant with a polite smile.
The Research Assistant walked up to Xu Wen, patted him on the shoulder, and with a teasing smile asked, "What is it that you don't want the school to know? What trouble are you planning?" While saying this, his eyes glanced towards Qinglan.
"Oh, it's nothing. It's just that she's sick and wants to take this opportunity to go back home. She doesn't want to continue the internship because she's feeling too weak," Xu Wen replied.
The Research Assistant laughed heartily, "You can't handle something like this? Students these days lack exercise. With computers and the internet, they like to stay in front of screens for hours. They don't realize how unfit they are until they start working! What will you do when you have a job? You need to take care of your health." He patted Xu Wen's shoulder again, speaking with a mix of seriousness and meaning.
Xu Wen smiled and said, "Yes, we need to strengthen our exercise. Qinglan has been weak since she was little. Look at you; you're in great shape." Xu Wen playfully punched him on the chest.
"Li Assistant, is there something you need?" After the joking ended, Xu Wen stood straight in front of him, still placing himself in the position of an intern and respectfully asked. In fact, Assistant Li was not much older than Xu Wen; he had only graduated from school and been working for a year or two. "Oh, let me check if you've returned safely. If everything is fine, please head to the office as soon as possible."
