Chen Yang sighed in relief, "Oh, his phone is off. It must be that he hasn't paid the bill." His phone often got shut off due to financial constraints, so he was used to it and didn't think much of it.
"That can't be right; he rarely has his phone off, almost never," Lin Xi said. Although she still felt uncertain, she relaxed a little upon hearing Chen Yang's words.
"There's always a first time for everything! He had never been in a relationship before!" Chen Yang started to joke again.
"Come on." Lin Xi could imagine Chen Yang's demeanor even if she couldn't see him; he was either grinning or being overly cheeky.
Later, Lin Xi continued chatting with Chen Yang on the phone for a while, and her heart gradually eased a bit. However, there were still too many unsettling factors swirling within her, making it hard for her to let go. So she repeatedly urged Chen Yang to inform her if he got in touch with Lu Chenyu.
Chen Yang teased her, "Why don't you just contact him yourself? Did you two have another argument?"
When Chen Yang asked this question, it made Lin Xi realize that it had indeed been a while since she last contacted Lu Chenyu. Otherwise, how would Chen Yang not know that she had broken up with him? With Chen Yang's personality, if he had been in touch with Lu Chenyu, he would have surely picked up on something.
"Have you not contacted him in a long time?" Lin Xi suddenly asked.
"Huh? Let me think." After pondering for a moment, Chen Yang replied, "It seems like I haven't reached out to him in quite a while. I've been busy since before the break; I went to Beijing for a trip and then started my internship right after returning. So it's been a long time since I last contacted him."
Lin Xi recalled this detail; indeed, when summer vacation started, Chen Yang had gone to Beijing. One reason was to see Simple. After graduating, Simple had secured a job in Beijing and was so excited that she rushed to start working without going home. So as soon as vacation began, Chen Yang hurried to Beijing to visit her. The other reason was that he wanted to explore internship opportunities in Beijing himself. He stayed there for over half a month before returning home. Since he couldn't find an internship in Beijing, he eventually followed his school's unified internship assignment and went to Shenzhen. The unit in Shenzhen urgently needed people, so after going there briefly, he quickly headed to Shenzhen. He hardly spent any days in the Provincial Capital during the entire summer vacation and was indeed very busy as he said.
After understanding this, Lin Xi asked Chen Yang somewhat self-comfortingly, "Is he also interning somewhere?" If he was interning, they wouldn't be able to meet. It was a reasonable explanation and self-soothing thought.
"You really don't know if he's interning? You didn't actually have another argument with him, did you?" After going around in circles, Chen Yang brought the topic back up again.
Lin Xi remained silent for a while before saying directly, "I'm hanging up now." Without waiting for Chen Yang to respond, she ended the call. On the other end, Chen Yang stared at his phone for quite some time, wondering if he was dreaming. One moment they were chatting animatedly, and the next, there was complete silence, an eerie stillness. Chen Yang even shook his phone and looked at the sky, which was still bright with sunset hues; it wasn't night yet, so it couldn't be a dream.
What is wrong with this girl? Are all girls like this nowadays? They come and go without a trace, and once they fall in love, they turn into emotional wrecks.
Chen Yang sighed helplessly and shook his head. After Lin Xi abruptly hung up on him, he tried calling Lu Chenyu again, but the line was still disconnected. "That's strange," he muttered to himself. Although he had explained himself to Lin Xi earlier, he knew that explanation was weak and unconvincing. Lu Chenyu was not someone who would leave his phone off; this situation was unusual.
Chen Yang continued to call several of his former high school classmates to inquire about Lu Chenyu's recent whereabouts, but all he received were responses of ignorance; no one had been in touch for a long time.
This isn't normal. Given Lu Chenyu's personality, he would be bored out of his mind if he hadn't chatted or hung out with friends for three days. But thinking about it, if he wanted to chat or hang out, the first person he would reach out to should be Chen Yang himself. Even if he was busy, he could still make time for a chat. If he wasn't reaching out to Chen Yang, would he really contact anyone else?
Yet Chen Yang refused to give up. Over the next few days, he called Lu Chenyu almost every day, but each time it was still disconnected. He continued to ask other high school classmates about Lu Chenyu.
It wasn't until a week later that he learned from one classmate that Lu Chenyu had gone abroad!
Chen Yang could hardly believe it because that classmate wasn't sure either; the information had come through several channels—from elementary school friends to middle school friends and finally to high school acquaintances before reaching him. Chen Yang knew this information wasn't very credible, but deep down, he felt it might be true while simultaneously wishing it weren't. So after receiving this news, he didn't immediately tell Lin Xi. Moreover, since he himself didn't want to accept this reality, he stopped inquiring about Lu Chenyu as actively as before. His efforts came to an abrupt halt, just like when Lin Xi had suddenly hung up on him during their conversation—one moment filled with laughter and chatter turned into sudden silence regarding any news about Lu Chenyu.
Meanwhile, Lin Xi had been waiting for news from Chen Yang. Ever since she called Lu Chenyu and asked Chen Yang about him, she hadn't tried calling Lu Chenyu again or inquired with anyone else about him.
It wasn't because she was busy or had forgotten; how could she forget about Lu Chenyu? It wasn't that she didn't want to know; rather, she was afraid. She feared hearing that cold voice again or receiving any unexpected news. She only wanted to believe the last thing she heard about him from Chen Yang—that his phone was off due to unpaid bills.
In reality, she had chosen to be selectively deaf!
Once September passed, the autumn chill in Beijing intensified with the approach of the Fragrant Hills Red Leaf Festival. Starting October 1st was the National Day holiday. Simple had already received a call from Chen Yang saying he planned to come to Beijing to see her during the holiday. Originally, Simple intended to return home during the National Day break but abandoned that idea upon learning Chen Yang would visit her in Beijing. After all, seeing the red leaves at Fragrant Hills during National Day was quite enticing. Having lived in Beijing for three years, she had seen the red leaves before; however, that previous time had been with Lu Chenyu and Yao Mengni along with a large group of people. At that time, her relationship with Chen Yang was still budding—they hadn't even held hands yet. This time would be different; it would just be her and him hand in hand climbing Fragrant Hills—how tempting that thought was for Simple!
