Qinglan looked up at the fireworks bursting in the sky like brilliant stars, unable to contain her excitement as she cheered. Unconsciously, her steps moved forward, bringing her closer to the window, and before she knew it, she was standing side by side with Xu Wen at the window.
Xu Wen was focused on setting off the fireworks.
She alternated between gazing at the large flowers in the sky and glancing at Xu Wen, who was intently lighting the fireworks. His handsome profile appeared even more refined in the flashes of light from the fireworks.
He smiled at her from the side and asked, "Are you happy?"
Are you happy? In front of such beautiful brilliance, she truly forgot all her worries and sorrows, genuinely immersed in joy.
It turned out that as long as there were beautiful sights before her eyes, happiness would follow. It turned out that happiness was not determined by the presence of troubles and sadness but by the existence of beautiful things!
"Are you happy?" Xu Wen asked, holding a firework in one hand, his smile bright like the fireworks blooming in the sky as he looked at Qinglan with sparkling eyes.
"Yes!" She nodded vigorously.
"Come on, you light one too." Xu Wen supported Qinglan's back, encouraging her to take a step forward.
Qinglan still felt a bit timid, but under Xu Wen's encouragement, she finally lit one. When the firework exploded with a loud bang in the sky and scattered into colorful blossoms, Qinglan clapped her hands and cheered.
Xu Wen looked into the bag he was carrying. There were still many fireworks inside. "How about we go outside and set some off like those people over there?" he suggested, pointing to a group of people lighting fireworks in an open area nearby.
"Okay." Qinglan nodded enthusiastically.
The two immediately grabbed the plastic bag and headed out.
The scene outside was indeed incomparable to that inside. Standing indoors in the sunlight, they couldn't see the thick white snow on the ground; only the cold wind blew against their faces.
Outside, the snow was thick, blanketing everything in white. Even without moonlight, it appeared exceptionally bright compared to a moonlit night. The cold wind on their faces felt refreshing rather than bone-chilling like it did indoors. Because of the snow, everything around seemed vast and expansive, as if they were lost in an endless sea of clouds, forgetting whether they were in the celestial palace or among earthly riches and splendor.
The area was filled with people; there was a lively buzz that didn't feel noisy. It looked bustling yet felt like being in an isolated realm. The surroundings were illuminated by fireworks; they bloomed like spring flowers against the cold air and a sudden gust of wind from the river reminded everyone that it was winter and spring was still some distance away.
Xu Wen looked around, and just then a cold breeze blew by, causing a clump of snow to fall from a small branch onto his back. He reached back to brush it off.
"Are you cold?" Xu Wen glanced at her. When they had left the house earlier, he had been in such a hurry that he forgot to remind her to wrap a scarf around her neck and put on a hat. However, he had grabbed his own scarf from the entrance where he had left it when he came in.
Qinglan shook her head and said, "Not cold, actually it's more comfortable than inside the house."
Regardless of how she answered, whether she was cold or not, Xu Wen had already taken the scarf from around his own neck and placed it around hers. Just as Qinglan was about to adjust it herself, Xu Wen had already set down the fireworks in his hands and helped her with it. Not only did he wrap it around her neck snugly, but he also opened the scarf completely to cover her head and face entirely, then wrapped it around her neck again, just like northern women would do in winter.
Qinglan laughed, "This is too scary, isn't it?"
Xu Wen looked at her and said, "Pregnant women need to stay warm." He stopped once he saw that there was nothing wrong with what he had done.
The two of them moved away from the crowd and found a slightly secluded spot to start setting off fireworks. As they focused on lighting the fireworks while enjoying the beautiful display, they completely failed to notice that their chosen secluded area was gradually filling up with people. Perhaps the fireworks outside were too captivating, especially since many people were gathering together to enjoy the lively atmosphere. Those who had been setting off fireworks from their own balconies came out as well. It seemed that seeing Qinglan and Xu Wen lighting fireworks drew others over.
People naturally enjoy lively gatherings and sharing beautiful moments and happiness with others! Therefore, everyone likes to showcase their wonderful experiences in crowded places and join the crowd when they are happy.
Many people gathered together, setting off fireworks while chatting. A few young couples brought their children along; the kids bounced around on the grass while watching the fireworks, filled with joy.
A little girl and a little boy chased each other across the grass. The girl stumbled over some grass in the dark and fell towards Qinglan. Her mother gasped and rushed forward to grab her arm just as Xu Wen dropped the fireworks in his hands and quickly moved in front of Qinglan to protect her.
"That was close," someone exclaimed, their eyes fixed on Qinglan's prominent belly.
The girl's mother scolded her daughter while continuously apologizing to Qinglan.
Qinglan smiled and said, "I'm fine, please don't scold her anymore." She reached out to comfort the little girl who was hiding in her mother's embrace after being startled.
"You're about to give birth soon, right?" the mother asked Qinglan with a smile.
"Yes, I'll be giving birth right after the New Year," Qinglan replied with a smile while still playing with the little girl.
Xu Wen quietly gazed at Qinglan, almost forgetting to set off the fireworks.
"You two are so young and already having a child, that's wonderful. It's better to have children early," the mother continued.
Xu Wen was taken aback.
"Oh, this is my child, not his," Qinglan replied with a smile while gently touching her belly, then turned to Xu Wen and smiled again.
"Oh, I thought you two were..." The mother felt a bit awkward.
Qinglan laughed again, teased the little girl for a moment, then turned to the stunned Xu Wen and said, "Why aren't you setting them off?"
"Oh, oh..." Xu Wen seemed to awaken from a dream.
After a while, the mother took the little girl and left.
By the time they returned from setting off the fireworks, it was already quite late. Xu Wen escorted Qinglan upstairs. At the door, Qinglan stood there and said to Xu Wen, "You can go back now; I'm fine. I can take care of myself." Her face still bore a smile and lingering joy.
After Xu Wen left, by the time Qinglan finished washing up and got into bed, it was almost dawn.
In contrast to the lively and bustling atmosphere of last night, the first day of the New Year felt quiet everywhere. Perhaps it was because everyone had enjoyed themselves too much and stayed out too late. On the morning of the New Year, around eight o'clock in Beijing City, it was still peaceful; only the occasional honk of a car and a few soft conversations could be heard on the streets.
