During that time, every time Xu Wen arrived at Qinglan's place, his mother's phone would ring, urging him to come back. Each time, he would argue with her over the phone. Although he consciously tried to avoid her, sometimes the arguments became quite intense and loud. The quality of mobile phones back then wasn't great, and there was significant sound leakage. After losing his graduate admission opportunity, Xu Wen worked at his original internship while taking care of Qinglan and her child.
Qinglan never dared to apologize for the losses Xu Wen suffered because of her. A simple apology felt too light yet too heavy for her to utter; all she could do was remain silent with an apologetic gaze.
Seeing her like this, Xu Wen comforted her, saying, "I never wanted to pursue graduate studies anyway; it was my parents who pressured me into it. Now it's actually good; I’m following my own wishes. I'm quite happy about it."
At that time, Qinglan had just given birth and had no diploma or degree certificate, no job—nothing at all—and she didn’t dare return home; she relied entirely on Xu Wen for support.
When their child was just a month old, Qinglan wanted to hire a nanny to take care of the baby while she looked for work. However, Xu Wen disagreed. Later on, six months passed. After Xu Wen graduated and officially started working at his original internship unit when their child was nearly six months old, Qinglan finally brought up hiring a nanny again so she could work.
Xu Wen thought for a moment and agreed to her request, using his connections to allow her to continue working at the original internship unit.
The matter of Qinglan being pregnant before marriage, including Xu Wen taking leave for her absence from the internship, eventually became known among the staff. Accompanying her back was Xu Wen; he insisted on seeing her home and said he wanted to face her family together with her.
Qing Shusheng could not forget that year when Qinglan stood at the gate holding the child alongside Xu Wen. No matter how unbelievable everything seemed at that moment, he felt he was on the verge of collapse.
Liu Xiuzhen was even more affected; she thought the child belonged to Xu Wen and blamed him for ruining Qinglan. Xu Wen remained silent, standing before them with his head bowed as if the child truly belonged to him.
