Xu Wen was driving while chatting lightly and laughing with Qingmei. No matter how tricky or difficult Qingmei's questions were, he showed no signs of impatience, thinking carefully about his responses, which kept Qingmei laughing all the way.
Qingmei seemed to have forgotten that there was another person sitting in the back of the car, and that this person was her mother.
Because of their laughter, Qinglan felt that time passed much faster than usual. Although she didn't speak, listening to them was not boring at all, and before long, they arrived home.
As soon as they reached Liu Family Village, Xu Wen parked the car in front of the yard. When Qinglan got out of the car, she saw a crowd gathered in front of the stilt house belonging to Bai Cuifen, right across the Stone Arch Bridge. It was bustling with people coming and going.
Could something have happened to Lady Bai Cuifen? A sudden worry gripped Qinglan as she recalled An Bingwen's death and the scene of her mother fainting in the wheat field due to low blood sugar.
For their family, it was only when something happened at their home or when An Shaomin returned that there would be such liveliness; usually, it was just her alone in a quiet house.
This wasn't during the summer or winter break, so Shaw Min wouldn't be back. Moreover, even if Shaw Min had returned, there wouldn't be so many people gathered in front of their house.
After studying for a year in Jian Ming's school's senior year repeat class, Shaw Min took the college entrance examination in 2005 and successfully enrolled in a local normal university. After graduating from teacher training in 2009, she became a middle school English teacher at the same school as Jian Ming and held her wedding with him at the end of that year. Now pregnant and not during a holiday period, it shouldn't be her returning.
Thus, Qinglan's first thought was whether something had happened to Bai Cuifen.
Although Bai Cuifen had become more distant from their family over the years and Qing Shusheng no longer cared for her as before, it was because Bai Cuifen felt ashamed and had distanced herself from them. However, Qinglan still thought about her and believed her father still cared for her in his heart; it was just that the way he showed his concern had changed.
So seeing so many people gathered in front of their house made Qinglan's heart race.
She glanced at Xu Wen and stepped forward towards her home.
"Maybe An Shaojie has returned..." a low voice suddenly came from behind her.
Qinglan's body stiffened at the sound from behind; her raised foot froze in place, leaving her motionless as if caught in the wind.
She did not ask Xu Wen, "How do you know An Shaojie has returned?" Was that question even necessary? With Xu Wen's personality, he would not speak up about something he wasn't sure of.
Perhaps it was because concern led to confusion that she made such a hasty and careless judgment. A quick glance at the entrance of her yard would have revealed that nothing had happened to Bai Cuifen. Qing Shusheng was leisurely smoking in his own yard. Although he appeared somewhat troubled, he clearly showed indifference to the commotion in front of Bai Cuifen's house, intentionally turning his face away and not even glancing in their direction.
Qinglan understood her father. Even if he seemed to no longer care about Bai Cuifen on the surface, if something truly happened to her, he would not sit idly by. He certainly wouldn't be so relaxed, smoking his pipe with an air of indifference.
Thus, Xu Wen's words and Qing Shusheng's attitude convinced Qinglan of this fact: An Shaojie had returned!
An Shaojie had returned.
Qinglan stood rigidly in place; she simply hadn't processed it yet.
Xu Wen was also frozen in place, holding onto Qingmei, staring motionlessly at Qinglan's straightened back.
An Shaojie had returned!?
After a long time, Qinglan finally moved slightly, only straightening her back a bit more.
Oh, so An Shaojie has returned.
But he has returned; what does it matter to me! Qinglan's lips curled slightly, revealing a barely perceptible smile that seemed both cold and mocking, yet also indifferent.
Then she turned around, displaying a calm smile. The speed at which her expression changed left Qingmei momentarily stunned, let alone Xu Wen, who was even more taken aback. The Qingmei beside him looked up in astonishment at Xu Wen's shocked expression before glancing back at Qinglan's gentle smile.
"Let's go; we are finally home," Qinglan said as she stepped forward to take Qingmei's other hand, joining Xu Wen in leading her toward the courtyard gate.
As he reached the gate, Qing Shusheng had already run out, chanting about the precious Qingmei, with his arms wide open to embrace her.
Once inside the house, Liu Xiuzhen also held Qingmei in her arms, showering her with kisses and affection for quite a while.
Xu Wen sat for a moment, warmed himself with some tea, and then got up to leave.
Liu Xiuzhen hurried out of the room and said to him, "Come over for dinner tonight."
Qingmei had just returned home after being away for a few days, so Liu Xiuzhen naturally wanted to prepare some good dishes to welcome Little Ones. Thus, she made sure to inform Xu Wen in advance.
Xu Wen nodded in agreement and then walked out.
On his way back to the dormitory, Xu Wen drove very slowly because he had something on his mind.
The company dormitory was located within the factory area, not far from Liu Family Village, nestled in an open field.
When Xu Wen first arrived at Liu Family Village, there were no dormitories in the company, nor even a factory area. At that time, Xu Wen lived at Qinglan's house. Later on, as the company got on track and gradually expanded, the current Fruit and Vegetable Processing Plant Area was built. They also hired some workers; although most of them were villagers from nearby villages, many villages were sparse in the mountains, with several kilometers between them. Since most of the paths were mountainous, many workers needed nearly an hour to reach the factory area from their homes. Because the work shifts were continuous day and night in three shifts, when the company expanded, they built a two-story dormitory for employees above the factory area on the first floor.
Later on, just last year, in early 2009, the company continued to expand. They not only hired villagers from nearby but also attracted applicants from the town. Eventually, they recruited some professional technicians and management personnel from the city and constructed a two-story dormitory specifically for these staff members within the factory area. After this dormitory was completed, Xu Wen moved in.
Initially, it was Qinglan who insisted that Xu Wen move into the dormitory and urged him persistently. However, Xu Wen ignored her completely and did not express any opinion on the matter. This led to Qing Shusheng and Liu Xiuzhen having strong objections against Qinglan's insistence that Xu Wen move into the dormitory. They had already regarded Xu Wen as family; why couldn't they all stay together? Why did it have to be that he was driven away?
