The first time Bai Cuifang expressed her doubts to An Shaojie, she said, "The green plum resembles you." 0

However, An Shaojie never felt that the green plum resembled him; it resembled her more. 0

When he was with her, he had tried hard to find his shadow in her, but sadly, all he saw was her shadow. 0

With her smoky dark blue eyebrows, neither too big nor too small long eyes, a delicate nose, and a petite face, she looked like a quiet, beautiful, gentle cat. Yet deep down, there was an unhidden stubbornness and obsession that gave her a mischievous and willful wildness. 0

Her shadow had never blurred in his heart, let alone disappeared. 0

This was what he found most sorrowful, not the fact that she was marrying someone else. 0

If her shadow no longer existed in his heart, why would he feel sorrow over whom she married? 0

The green plum seemed dissatisfied with his response. She pouted and shifted her gaze elsewhere, not looking at him. 0

Fortunately, she did not look at him. 0

His desperate eyes and pale face were not something she should see because in the long days of the past, it was he who lost her. Therefore, all of this should be borne by him alone. He had no right to receive even a shred of pity from her, not even a sympathetic or questioning glance or a look of concern. 0

"However, I feel exactly the opposite," the green plum said as she lowered her head. 0

"Oh?" An Shaojie was momentarily taken aback. Since it had been a while before she suddenly spoke up, he had almost forgotten what he had just said and had not connected her words to his previous statement. 0

He squinted as he thought. 0

"I disliked you very much the first time I met you," she continued. 0

"Oh?" Her words jolted him awake; he finally remembered what she had said earlier about fate. 0

"Why? Am I someone who looks very unpleasant at first glance?" He looked at her, eager to hear her opinion. 0

"That's not true." She smiled and turned her face slightly, suddenly saying, "Actually, you're quite handsome." 0

"Handsome?" He touched his face and gave a wry smile. "No one has ever said I'm handsome." 0

What he really wanted to say was, "You never said I was handsome." 0

If she had told him that back then, even if she had never said she loved him or even liked him, just one compliment about being handsome would have given him a lot of confidence and courage. 0

But she never did; she never said anything that he could look back on with even a hint of pride. 0

"Oh, not handsome." She quickly corrected herself, tilting her head and giggling. "You're cool, very cool in a cold way." 0

He couldn't help but laugh at her playful words. 0

"That's right; I'm just a cold-blooded creature." She had actually said that to him before. The way she said it flashed through the years and appeared clearly in front of him. He shook his head and chuckled quietly, just like he did back then when she first said it. 0

After a while, she suddenly remembered something. She dug into her backpack and tossed a card at him, saying, "Oh, this is yours, right? You dropped it on the floor in the hospital room that day. Luckily I picked it up and kept it for you; otherwise, you'd be in trouble again." She gestured with her chin at the card lying on him. 0

An Shaojie picked up the card and looked at her with a somewhat dazed expression. She, however, seemed indifferent or even disdainful, as if to say, "Tch, how can you be an adult and still not handle such a small matter?" 0

She still had her hands propped on the chair, shrugging her shoulders and looking elsewhere. 0

It was a meal card with Qinglan's name written on it. She must have recognized those two characters, so she should know who the card belonged to, yet she didn't ask anything. 0

But her indifferent demeanor and tone were very much like an adult's; in fact, she seemed more sensible than many adults. 0

Was this really a child who had just turned eight? Her face showed disdain for him and pride in herself. 0

Bright sunlight shone on An Shaojie's face as he squinted his eyes. Time seemed to return to a distant past and place—on the hillside behind the house, in the wheat field, on that branch of the Plum Tree in the fields... 0

The sunlight there was even brighter and warmer than here. She always acted and spoke like an adult, always pointing things out to educate him. Her way of handling matters was always more appropriate than his; what she said always made more sense and sounded more pleasant. Adults always praised her. 0

He always found himself at a loss for what to do next or how to say the right thing. Yes, that's right; his mouth opened and closed as if he wanted to say something, but in the end, he never managed to utter a word. She stood with her hands behind her back, chest out, head held high, laughing disdainfully as if to say, "What's wrong? Are you dumbfounded?" 0

Indeed, since childhood, he had been dumbstruck in front of her, unsure of what to do or say. Eventually, he simply stopped speaking when he was around her. As for doing things? No matter what, he could never surpass her. From then on, he decided to do things his own way without caring about her. 0

He looked at Qingmei just as he had looked at her back then; she was so confident and proud. 0

He lowered his head and smiled, carefully placing his meal card into the inner pocket of his suit jacket. He patted it lightly, feeling the hardness inside, confirming that it was indeed there. He smiled again. 0

"Make sure to keep it safe from now on; don’t lose it again. If my mom finds it, it probably won’t be good. If she doesn’t find it, it still won’t be good. In short, losing it is not a good thing. If you can’t keep it safe, then you should return it to her." 0

As she spoke, she jumped down from the long wooden bench, brushed off her clothes, and adjusted the backpack on her back. 0

"Bye-bye! Class is starting; I have to go," she turned back with a smile and waved at An Shaojie. 0

An Shaojie wanted to raise his hand to wave goodbye, but his heart felt sour, and he couldn't lift his hand; it just rested on his shoulder, unable to move. 0

She paused for a moment, seeming a bit uncertain herself. Suddenly, she turned and ran towards him, standing in front of him while he remained seated. His once tall figure now seemed small compared to hers as he looked up at her. 0

After standing there for a while, she suddenly reached out and hugged his head, resting it against her chest. "You’re the one who likes my mom, right? My mom is going to marry someone else; are you very sad?" 0

Her words stirred up memories from the past; his heart suddenly ached intensely. By the time she lifted his head again, tears were already streaming down his face. She wiped away his tears and said, "Don't cry. Are you unwilling to see my mom marry someone else?" He nodded through his sobs. 0
