After class, the two girls returned to Dormitory 414 with Su Jin'er and Linyuan.
The next part of the story left them feeling terrified.
Five years ago, the current Old Laboratory building had not yet been constructed; it was still the Old Laboratory Building. That year, a girl named Xiaoqing hanged herself in the Old Laboratory. Since it was a suicide, the school did not pay much attention to it. After a period of investigation, the police found no leads and closed the case, attributing her death to academic pressure. The girl named Xiaoqing lived in Dormitory 414.
After that, strange occurrences began happening in the school. For example, doors in certain dormitories would open on their own, faucets in the bathrooms would turn on by themselves, and frighteningly, people often heard crying sounds coming from the restroom. However, no fatalities occurred until one night when a piercing scream echoed through the sky, marking the beginning of true horror.
"What exactly happened?" Linyuan asked urgently.
One of the girls unconsciously glanced out the window, while another girl seemed to try to lighten the mood by saying, "We forgot to introduce ourselves."
Su Jin'er looked at her pale face and said, "I'm Su Jin'er, and this is Linyuan. What about you?"
"I'm Ouyang Chunxiao, and she’s Wu Nannan."
Wu Nannan turned to Su Jin'er and smiled, though her complexion appeared even paler than Ouyang Chunxiao's.
"Come on, tell us more of the story!" Linyuan said excitedly. Although she was scared of ghosts and monsters, her curiosity was stronger than her fear.
"The Senior Sister said that for a period after that, they lived in fear."
It turned out that after Xiaoqing's death, students began referring to the strange events at school as Xiaoqing's ghost returning. Rumors spread that she must have come back for revenge. However, since nothing particularly terrifying happened, students didn't take it too seriously. Yet, true fear was just beginning.
That night when a chilling female voice pierced the sky, terror enveloped the entire campus. The source of that haunting voice came from Dormitory 414.
"Did she die?" Linyuan asked.
"No," came the reply. "The girl who screamed did not die; another girl did. That girl had gotten up to use the bathroom and turned on the light only to find her hanging from the ceiling fan. Her eyes were wide open as if they were about to pop out of their sockets; her tongue was sticking out, and drops of blood fell onto the floor, pooling into a puddle."
Linyuan's eyes widened in surprise, while Wu Nannan beside her looked terrified at the ceiling fan, which was slowly swaying as if a corpse were actually hanging from it.
"The fan—why is it moving?" Wu Nannan said in fear.
Hearing her words, they all looked up at the fan, which was indeed swaying slowly.
"Could it be that Xiaoqing's ghost has come back? What should we do?" Wu Nannan continued, her voice sharp with fear.
Su Jin'er glanced at the fan and then at the window. "Maybe the window wasn't closed properly."
After saying that, she stood up and walked to the windowsill. She checked the window and smiled, "It really wasn't closed properly!"
Once she secured the window, the fan stopped moving, and everyone's tense hearts calmed down, though Wu Nannan's face remained pale and bloodless.
"Is that girl really dead?"
"Yes, the scream of another girl woke everyone up. Many were scared when they saw the girl's body."
"What did the police say?" Su Jin'er asked.
Ouyang Chunxiao shook her head. "The Senior Sister didn't say anything. We were all too scared to think about asking that; only you, Jin'er, would think of it."
"I don't believe in demons, so I think it was human-caused. Since it's human-caused, there are only two possibilities: either it was murder or suicide. That's why we need to know what the police said!"
Linyuan looked at Su Jin'er with a half-smile and said, "Why are you becoming more and more like a detective? And such a beautiful one at that."
Su Jin'er shot her a glare and said, "I wish I were a detective. However, I'm really curious about what happened with this case afterward." She redirected the conversation back to the topic.
"Later, several more people died, but we don't know how the case was closed."
"What about the others? How did they die?" Su Jin'er asked.
"They couldn't have all hanged themselves, right?" Linyuan added.
Wu Nannan bit her lip and shook her head, saying, "No, one fell from upstairs, another drowned, and one hanged themselves."
"So that means including the first one who died, Xiaoqing, there were three hangings, one fall, and one drowning, right?"
"Yes, a total of five people died that year, and the time between each death was only about a week. Five people died in just over a month."
"Five people dying in just over a month is really terrifying," Linyuan said while nodding.
"Forget it; after all, this happened five years ago. There's no point in studying it now. Let's focus on our studies!"
Su Jin'er stood up and looked out the window.
The sky had turned grayish-white at some point, indicating that a change in weather was coming.
"Time has passed so quickly; it's almost noon. We need to go eat soon. Let's head out!" Ouyang Chunxiao waved goodbye to them.
"Okay, sure! Come visit us when you have time!" Linyuan smiled and waved back.
Wu Nannan's face remained pale. She seemed to have something to say but held back. As soon as they stepped outside, she said, "Why do I feel like their dormitory is so strange? There's always this cold wind blowing in, constantly creeping into my clothes."
"How could that be? I don't think there's anything strange about it! And don't forget, what happened five years ago wasn't specifically targeting Room 414; only two of the deceased were from 414."
Their conversation gradually faded away, but standing at the door, Su Jin'er happened to overhear.
"Jin'er, what are you doing standing there?" Linyuan's words had just left her mouth when Du Xiaonan rushed in from outside.
"Hey! What are you doing by the door?" Du Xiaonan asked her.
"Oh! Nothing, I was just thinking of closing the door, but you came in just in time."
Su Jin'er sat on the bed, contemplating what Ouyang Chunxiao had said earlier. On the surface, it seemed like there was nothing questionable about it, but she had a nagging feeling that something was being suspiciously concealed.
After thinking for a long time, she still couldn't figure it out. She shook her head, wondering if she had watched too many detective shows. Why was she being so suspicious? It had already been five years since that incident; what good would it do to dwell on it? With that thought, she stood up and glanced at the clock—it was already half past eleven.
"Xiaoyuan, let's go eat; we have class this afternoon!"
After waiting for a while without hearing Linyuan's response, she turned around to look at Linyuan on the upper bunk and realized she had fallen asleep.
"How can she sleep so soundly?" Su Jin'er shook her head with a wry smile.
"Are you all going to eat?" Du Xiaonan suddenly burst out of the bathroom. She had gone straight in as soon as she returned and was only now coming out.
"Yeah! Do you want to join us?"
"Of course! By the way, Jin'er, can I make a request?" Du Xiaonan suddenly said in a low voice.
"What is it?"
"Could you and Linyuan take me along from now on? Li Yiqian always goes off alone and is up to something mysterious. I don't want to be left out, so I want to stick with you guys."
"Of course! I thought you had friends in other dorms?"
"Not at all! You have no idea? I heard a story today that scared me half to death, so I don't want to wander around the campus alone!"
"A story? What story?"
As soon as she heard the word "story," Linyuan immediately jumped up from her bed.
"Weren't you asleep?"
"Yeah! But you know, I love listening to stories! So I woke up."
Su Jin'er looked at her helplessly and pouted.
"Let's go! We can talk while we walk," Su Jin'er said as she put on her jacket.
"Wait for me, I'll be right there." After saying that, Du Xiaonan rushed into the bathroom again.
Fortunately, the school's restrooms and bathrooms are separate; otherwise, it would be a squeeze.
The cafeteria was still crowded, especially since all the students had just finished their classes, making it packed with people.
After getting their meals, they searched for a table that could fit three people.
"Hey! There's an empty spot over there; let's go there." Du Xiaonan pointed to a corner.
The restaurant was packed, yet that corner was eerily empty, with not a single person in sight.
"How strange, why is there no one here?" They placed their trays on the table, curiously watching each passerby. However, everyone seemed to avoid that spot, and upon seeing the three of them sitting there, some even displayed expressions of fear.
"Yeah! Why do they look at us so strangely? They seem really scared," Linyuan mumbled as she popped a piece of braised pork into her mouth. "Wow! So greasy!" Linyuan immediately spat out the piece of meat she had just eaten.
"Good thing I didn't order that dish," Su Jin'er said as she put some vegetables in her mouth.
"Hey! Isn't that Xu Lingling and Chu Feifan? Are they together?" Du Xiaonan remarked while looking into the crowd.
"Exactly! It looks like they're coming this way," Su Jin'er said as she lifted her head to glance before returning to her meal.
"Hi! How are you?" Xu Lingling greeted with a smile, then looked around and asked, "Aren't you afraid at all? Or do you not even know what kind of place this is?"
"What do you mean?" Linyuan raised her head, looking at her displeased.
"Ha! It seems you really don't know. Well then, let me tell you," Xu Lingling said with an air of superiority.
At that moment, Chu Feifan sat down next to Su Jin'er and said, "I want to hear why this place is off-limits too!"
