The hardships of carrying a child for ten months have never truly hit me until today, three years after our marriage.
Perhaps my emotions were all written on my face, as Wang Xu reached out and placed his hand on my forehead, softly asking, "What's wrong?"
Seeing the worry on his face, I pulled his hand down and held it with both of mine. His warm hand eased my heart a bit. "Wang Xu, do you really not like children?"
Wang Xu seemed a bit more displeased than before. "Why do you keep dwelling on this? If we have kids, we have them; if not, we don't. Think about it—can this be figured out? Why worry unnecessarily?"
His casual tone didn't make me feel any better. A few days ago, my mother-in-law visited again. Noticing that my expression had softened somewhat, she refrained from coldly bringing up the topic of children, which struck me as odd.
I thought perhaps my mother-in-law had given up on me as her daughter-in-law. After all, before our marriage, she had held my hand and made one request: that the Wang family should have children in pairs.
I had readily agreed at the time, but who would have thought that despite both Wang Xu and I being perfectly healthy and never using contraception, we still had no children?
My mother-in-law's expression had grown increasingly disappointed over the past year, but in recent days, it seemed to turn indifferent and unconcerned, leaving me feeling empty inside.
Could it be that Wang Xu spoke to her about this? While I felt relieved on my end, Wang Xu must have faced quite a bit of criticism from her.
He is such a dutiful son who has never gone against his mother's wishes. If he were to create a rift with her for my sake, I couldn't feel happy about that.
"Wang Xu, how about we go to that place your mother mentioned this weekend to look for a miracle doctor? I've heard many people in that village have been cured by his talisman water."
Wang Xu's expression darkened even further than before. "I think you’ve been at home too long with nothing to do; you need to find something to occupy your mind!"
He flicked my forehead with his finger, and I instinctively frowned and closed my eyes. When I opened them again, Wang Xu was looking at me with a beaming smile.
"What’s up?" I asked, following Wang Xu's lead.
To my surprise, a triumphant glint suddenly appeared on his face as he rubbed his hands together mischievously and raised an eyebrow in response. "Think about it; the key to having a baby is what?"
I was momentarily thrown off by his strange behavior and instinctively asked, "What?"
"Doing it."
Wang Xu said this matter-of-factly, his hand already slipping down from the neckline of my nightgown. However, my nightgown was too conservative, and he could only reach just below my collarbone before being unable to go further. This seemed to dampen his excitement a bit.
Feeling sorry for him, I thought about undressing myself, but Wang Xu immediately stopped me. He withdrew his hand and placed it back on my nightgown without any intention of helping me take it off, instead gazing at me meaningfully.
"I believe we will definitely have children. And if we have a son, he won't go hungry; we can raise him to be chubby and healthy."
Before I could fully comprehend what he meant, Wang Xu had already placed his hand on the lower part of my chest, wrapping it around my soft curves through the fabric of my nightgown. His fingers spread wide to encompass me completely, and a look of fascination crossed his face.
The atmosphere was incredibly suggestive.
"My wife is a treasure all over. Before feeding our son, let’s take care of the old man first!"
Wang Xu loved to refer to himself as the old man. As soon as he finished speaking, he leaned down towards me. Naturally, I cooperated well. After a passionate encounter, I fell into a deep sleep, completely unaware of what Wang Xu did afterward.
