Indeed, Deng Xiaomei suspected my identity. I casually sent her the photo of Wang Nan that Mu Miaomiao had sent me, and I could almost see her eyes light up; she replied almost instantly.
"Look at you, you don't seem very old, but you're quite handsome. You're my type."
I coldly replied, "Yeah, twenty-five."
Wang Nan's family is wealthy, giving him a head start compared to others. He works exceptionally hard and has left his peers far behind.
"That's great! I'm twenty. Calling you 'brother' feels too distant; I'll call you 'little brother' instead," she said with a cute face.
"If you like it that way, go ahead."
"You’re so nice to me, of course I like it. Actually, I really like your Porsche. Just kidding!"
The conversation with Deng Xiaomei made my scalp tingle. I had seen her before; she was cold in front of Mu Miaomiao, but now she had turned into a lively girl? She was nothing but a green tea bitch, not even worthy of holding Wang Nan's finger.
"If you like it, I'll take you for a ride next time. I have other cars too." I tried to immerse myself in Wang Nan's character. He really did have a Porsche, but Mu Miaomiao complained about its low chassis, so Wang Nan stopped driving it and left it in the garage to gather dust.
"Really? You have other cars too?" she asked with sparkling eyes.
"Yeah."
I had teased Deng Xiaomei enough. If she wasn't too high in rank, she would genuinely believe that I was just as good a man as Wang Nan. Since she could get along well with Wang Xu, she would certainly want to be with someone like Wang Nan even more.
I couldn't say too much for fear of exposing myself; just enough to convey the meaning would suffice. At this moment, I believed Deng Xiaomei's thoughts were revolving around "me," and that was enough.
Around noon, Wang Xu, who hadn't returned for lunch in a long time, surprisingly came back today.
His grandmother was also there. Upon seeing Wang Xu return, she didn't express surprise but instead paused for a moment and complained, "Why are you back? Aren't you at... the company?"
I set the table for Wang Xu in the restaurant, hearing my mother-in-law's hesitation and dissatisfaction in her words. I glanced at Wang Xu; his expression was awkward. Looking back at me, he finally composed himself and replied to my mother-in-law, "The company isn't busy today, so I came back to take a look."
"Let's eat," I said lightly, sitting down first.
I could roughly guess what was going on. After flirting with Deng Xiaomei in the morning, Wang Xu returned for lunch. So where had he been eating before? Was it at his workplace or at the "company" downstairs?
If that's the case, then the relationship between Deng Xiaomei and Wang Xu is as flimsy as the Chinese yuan.
My mother-in-law, who had never seen much of the world and didn't understand social nuances, maintained a stern face throughout the meal, not giving Wang Xu a pleasant expression.
Wang Xu, however, was quite open. He frequently served me food and kept saying caring things. I tried my best to appear happy but couldn't manage it; I could only strive to keep my expression from looking too unpleasant.
"Look at you, you're eating too little. You're too thin," Wang Xu said, thinking he was being considerate, and added a piece of meat to my bowl.
My mother-in-law chimed in with cold remarks from the side: "Yes, a thin child can't even bear one."
Upon hearing this, Wang Xu immediately shot a glance at his mother. I put down my chopsticks, feeling nauseated. Looking at Wang Xu calmly, I asked him, "What if there's a woman who can give you children? What would you do?"
I stared intently at Wang Xu. His expression changed drastically; he froze for a moment before stammering back to me, "Wife, why are you saying these things?"
His voice grew lower and sounded quite guilty.
My mother-in-law seemed to have forgotten that this was the moment to question why I was speaking out of turn and remained unusually quiet.
I looked coldly at Wang Xu, feeling truly disheartened. Even if he gradually became indifferent and I discovered the reason behind it, he still frequently interacted with Deng Xiaomei during this time while pretending to love me wholeheartedly.
How could I swallow this? The dignity that Wang Xu trampled underfoot—did he ever consider that I am his legally wedded wife?
The atmosphere was awkward as I slowly picked up my chopsticks again and chose some cold dishes to eat. I didn't touch the meat that Wang Xu had served me; it just looked unappetizing.
Once Wang Xu regained his composure, he seemed to think that it was his mother's words that upset me, and immediately whispered in complaint, "Mom, why do you say such things? Zhuang Jun and I are still trying. She is my wife and your daughter-in-law; how can you say that about her?"
Surprisingly, my mother-in-law didn't get angry like she usually did. I caught her glancing at me a few times out of the corner of my eye. Feeling guilty, she mumbled a few things I couldn't hear clearly and didn't argue further with Wang Xu about it.
I had long lost my appetite, so I put down my chopsticks and turned to go back to my room. Not long after, Wang Xu came in, sat beside me, wrapped his arms around my shoulders, and spoke soothingly, "What are you doing? Why are you upset with Mom again? She just said it casually; look at you, taking it too seriously."
Wang Xu really didn't think I had the ability to suspect him and Deng Xiaomei; he naturally assumed I was upset because of his mother.
Hadn't my mother-in-law been cold and sarcastic towards me enough? I tried my best to ignore it and maintain harmony at home, but what did I get in return?
"Still not happy? You really are something; look at you, such an adult..."
Wang Xu continued to lecture me like a mantra. I turned around and stared at him, interrupting his words: "Wang Xu, where did you eat lunch today?"
Wang Xu was startled and his voice faltered a bit: "I had lunch at the company."
"I asked your colleagues, and they said you haven't eaten at the company for a long time." This was a lie I made up just to test Wang Xu.
To my surprise, Wang Xu's expression changed immediately as he shouted back at me: "Who said that? If I'm not eating at the company, where else would I eat? You must have heard wrong. I didn't eat in the cafeteria; I usually order two stir-fried dishes from downstairs."
"Do you eat alone every day?"
"Of course! I don't have much to say with them. Eating alone is quieter. Why have you become so suspicious lately? Who told you something? Was it Xiao Ai, Wenwen, or Abi?"
"No one told me anything. If you want to keep something secret, you must not do it."
"Why did I do what? I see you haven't been yourself lately. It's Mu Miaomiao, right? Mom said she came by a few days ago. What, are you feeling good and she just wanted to throw some shade at you, and you actually took it in?"
Wang Xu kept getting more outrageous, so I hurriedly interrupted him: "What nonsense are you talking about? Mu Miaomiao throwing shade at me? Come on, aside from not being married, how is her boyfriend any worse than yours? Does she need to throw shade at me?"
Wang Xu snorted coldly: "I think it's definitely her. You should keep your distance from her. A woman who still isn't married at this age is questionable; who knows how many she's been with."
I was furious. How could Wang Xu turn things around like this? Just because he acted that way didn't mean others were the same.
"I'll tell you, Wang Xu, you know exactly what you're doing. Don't splash your dirty water on Miao Miao. She's not as filthy as you!"
Wang Xu was very angry and retorted: "Me dirty? How am I dirty? I work my ass off every day to support the whole family, and what about you? You just sit at home all day enjoying yourself. Have I ever said a word against you?"
Hearing this made me even angrier: "You were the one who supported me when I quit my job; have you forgotten?"
"I can't stop you from doing something you've already decided on, can I? Whatever you want, I've always gone along with it. Look at your temper now; it's getting worse. Mom was right."
I took a deep breath: "What did Mom say?"
"Nothing."
