At seven in the evening, a sound came from the front door. With a "bang," the chandelier above me suddenly lit up. Wang Xu entered, and upon seeing me, seemed somewhat surprised. "What are you doing sitting here in the dark without turning on a light?"
I could hardly remember how long I had been sitting in the darkness, just waiting and waiting for Wang Xu to glance my way and pull me up.
But what did I get in return?
“Wang Xu, I want to discuss something with you.”
After washing his hands, Wang Xu walked out of the kitchen. Before sitting down next to me, he noticed something by my legs and picked it up. “A down comforter? Did you buy this online again? It looks pretty warm.”
I looked at Wang Xu’s profile and said softly, “Wang Xu, let’s bring Mom over to live with us.”
Wang Xu’s movements halted abruptly. He turned his head, his eyes flickering with surprise. “Zhuang, Zhuang Jun, why are you suddenly thinking of this? What do we need to bring Mom over for? Isn’t she doing fine where she is?”
I shook my head and pressed on. “No, it’s not fine. I want to bring Mom over to live with us. This comforter is for her. Let’s go help her move today. Is she still at home?”
Wang Xu panicked, clearly not expecting me to say this. He was completely at a loss and started rambling nonsense: “Mom must be at home; where else would she be? But let’s not go pick her up. Didn’t you say you wanted to enjoy a few more years of just the two of us?”
It was rare to see Wang Xu so flustered. I realized then how thoroughly he had deceived me before; he must have rehearsed his lies countless times in his mind. How could he so casually suggest bringing Mom downstairs to live with us while being so unguarded around me?
Before learning the truth, I had hoped that Wang Xu would cherish our past as a couple and wouldn’t go too far. But he had already stabbed me when I was completely unprepared.
I, Zhuang Jun, have lived until now, and everything is in ruins.
"You have always been a filial son, saying that I should treat Mom well. Before, I was narrow-minded, but I don't think that way anymore. I want to bring Mom over and take good care of her. I want to be a good daughter-in-law."
"You want to be a good daughter-in-law, but there's no rush. We should at least discuss it with Mom, right? How about tomorrow? When Mom comes over, we can..."
"Wang Xu!" I shouted, having held back for too long. I was on the brink of despair. Mu Miaomiao told me to stay calm, but how much longer could I endure?
I raised my hand, pointing at him, gritting my teeth in anger yet still feeling attached to him.
So much has happened in these days. I could easily view it like a movie or read it like a book. I could slap Wang Xu across the face, find a way to make Deng Xiaomei lose her child, and divorce him gracefully without leaving him a single asset.
In every play, justice always prevails in the end.
But what about me? I'm just an ordinary person; how dare I gamble my life away? I have no children but have parents and friends, longing for a complete family. What is wrong with my willingness to compromise?
One moment I'm praised for being loving with my husband, and the next I'm fighting against the mistress and causing a divorce. The city is buzzing with gossip while I Zhuang Jun never thought of abandoning this person.
"Today, today we bring Mom over from Deng Xiaomei."
Wang Xu looked confused, opening his mouth several times, his face pale and unable to say a word.
My heart sank further. Wang Xu, why aren't you saying anything?
"Not going to explain? Fine, if you're not going to explain, then let me speak. Wang Xu, I'm so tired. Let's lay everything out on the table."
As soon as the words fell, Wang Xu suddenly reached out and grabbed my arms, glaring at me fiercely. "Zhuang Jun, don't talk nonsense!"
