Wang Xu's voice carried a panic that couldn't be masked even over the phone. "Honey, I really am changing. Trust me, it's just a matter of time. Please give me a little more time, just a bit more time, okay?"
Before I could respond, Wang Xu pressed on urgently. "Honey, you really have to believe me. How can you forget all the good I've done for you? I love you, I truly love you. Just give me one more chance; I know I've made mistakes."
Wang Xu's voice was so familiar, like sweet whispers from my past.
I lay helplessly on my desk, warm breaths hitting my face as I quietly sobbed.
"Wang Xu, just kill me."
I had imagined starting over more than once. Even if there were scars left behind, even with flaws, I would be willing to mend things again. As my dad said, couples go through life patching things up; there's nothing that can't be overcome.
No matter how difficult or pitiful it was, it wouldn't change my willingness.
But little did I know that my mother-in-law never regarded me as family. I couldn't bear her grandchild and had become the one who harmed him. I had no idea I was trapped in such a tragic mire from the very beginning.
Wang Xu pushed me down; he truly wanted to ruin me.
Since my mother-in-law could come to my workplace to publicly humiliate me, it was clear that Wang Xu had told her something at home. The content didn't even matter anymore; there was no future for us if we forced ourselves to stay together. My mother-in-law had already cast her curse.
How could Wang Xu possibly go against his mother's wishes? He was a filial son and had never encountered anything like me before. I couldn't change his devotion to his mother, nor did I want to.
"What's wrong, honey? Did you hear something?" Wang Xu asked nervously. "Is it about Mu Miaomiao again? Is she talking nonsense in front of you?! You can't believe her! She's trying to harm you!"
Wang Xu was still repeatedly emphasizing Miao Miao's conspiracy theory at that moment. I had no interest in listening any longer; the issue had always been between him and me. If Miao Miao really did something, it was merely adding fuel to the fire. No matter how confused I was, I could clearly distinguish the root cause. Why did Wang Xu only blame Miao Miao?
"Stop talking, Wang Xu, just stop." I didn't want to hear any more. I hung up the phone and leaned on the table for a while before getting up to leave. The entire office was empty, leaving only me behind.
I forced myself to focus as I left the company and returned to the hotel to write my resignation letter. The next day at the office, Lu Ming was absent. I handed my resignation letter to Sister Lu, who raised an eyebrow and looked at me with interest. "Looks like you still don't know?"
I shook my head, not knowing... what?
Sister Lu took the resignation letter from my hand and toyed with it, her gaze deepening. "Xiao Zhang at the front desk was fired yesterday."
I was taken aback. "Xiao Zhang?"
Sister Lu nodded and sighed. "Lu Zong told Xiao Zhang yesterday that this time it was her negligence for letting random people in, which affected the company's image and progress. He gave her half a year's salary and let her go."
At this point, Sister Lu returned my resignation letter to me in full. "Lu Zong is right; letting random people into the company is indeed not good. After all, we are a new company; a small temple cannot accommodate a great Buddha. It's better to have less trouble."
It would be false to say I couldn't detect the sarcasm in Sister Lu's words, but my mind was focused on the fact that someone had lost their job because of my unintentional mistake. Under Sister Lu's astonished gaze, I asked her for Lu Ming's phone number.
Sister Lu was surprised. "You don't know Lu Zong's number?"
