"Let me ask you, have you been to my house? What did you say to my parents?" I questioned Wang Xu, not expecting him to have the audacity to come to my home. If my dad had heard the whole truth, would Wang Xu still be standing in front of me?
Wang Xu probably noticed my displeasure and lowered his voice to explain, "I did come over a couple of days ago. I know you didn't want me there, but I couldn't sit still. I thought about how my parents are getting older; how could I let them worry more?"
Wang Xu's words sounded sincere. If it were in the past, I might have believed him. But he was just a person who put on a facade. If he treated my parents even a fraction as well as I treated my mother-in-law, it would be acceptable. But he didn't; he only cared about his own mother.
"Just tell me what you said."
Wang Xu's face turned pale. Seeing that he couldn't avoid it, he confessed honestly, "I said that you had a little quarrel with our mom; it's not a big deal. I came to pick you up."
What? A quarrel? I was instantly furious.
"Wang Xu, how could you downplay such a significant matter as just a quarrel? Do you really think this can just be brushed aside? No way, I'm definitely getting a divorce."
Even saying the word "divorce" made my heart ache like being pricked by needles. Every step I took felt like it was pulling me further away from Wang Xu. He didn't understand how heavy the word "divorce" was for me; it weighed just as much for him.
Yet he acted like the one who had been wronged, playing the victim as if it were genuine.
"Wife, I'm begging you, please don't mention divorce. I didn't mean to make our parents worry; that's why I said that. I know it's not just a quarrel; it's my fault, and I'm already trying to make amends."
Wang Xu earnestly took my hand and sat down on the edge of the bed, looking anxious and regretful.
"Make amends? Wang Xu, do you really think there's still hope?"
"Yes! How could there not be!" Wang Xu perked up a bit. "I've already arranged for that woman to get an abortion. Just give me a little more time, my wife. Trust me, it will be over soon."
Wang Xu kept insisting that I trust him, but did he even realize what had caused the mutual distrust between us? It was his infidelity that came first, betraying me and even doubting me. If he had thought of me at all when he was doing something wrong, we wouldn't be in such a ridiculous situation.
Deng Xiaomei's pregnancy was a result of his actions. She could stay downstairs with a growing belly because he allowed it, and the dirt thrown on me was something he deliberately orchestrated.
What else could be done to remedy this?
Even if his first choice after learning about Deng Xiaomei's pregnancy was to terminate it, I wouldn't cling to just one issue. Marriage is about navigating through ups and downs together, but Wang Xu knowingly continued to make mistakes, even letting his mother move into Deng Xiaomei's home to take care of her.
What right did he have to salvage this marriage? Where did he find the face?
"No need, let the child stay. It will ensure your family has descendants," I said as I shook off Wang Xu's hand that was holding mine and moved to the other side of the bed. Without hesitation, Wang Xu followed me, still playing the victim.
"What descendants? That child won't even enter my family's door. I only want the child you give me; I don't want anything else. That time, it was my mother who forced me to keep it. I was wrong. Please give me this chance again, okay?"
Wang Xu whispered in my ear, but I remained unmoved. Not long after, my dad knocked on the door and said he wanted to talk to me. I got up and walked around Wang Xu toward the door, catching a glimpse of his hopeful eyes.
The last remnants of affection in my heart were tugged by Wang Xu's expression; he looked up at me with eager eyes like a child waiting for candy.
If only Wang Xu had thought about discussing things with me right from the start when everything went wrong, would things be different now...
Forget it.
