Wang Xu looked at me with a pitiful expression, as if holding back words. My mom noticed my demeanor and quickly stepped in between us, trying to mediate: "Alright, alright, Son-in-law hasn't been here for a while and wants to stay for a few days. He just got some time off, so let your dad take a break and go out for a few days."
My mom was defending Wang Xu, partly because they were unaware of the situation. She had always had a good impression of him. I didn't want to tell her everything right now, so I decided to postpone the conversation until after the wedding.
My dad also scolded me a bit, telling me to change my temper and saying it was Wang Xu's fault for spoiling me. Wang Xu repeatedly said, "It's all my fault. I've been busy with work lately and haven't taken care of Zhuang Jun's feelings. Dad, Mom, please don't blame Zhuang Jun; it's all my fault."
Wang Xu sounded sincere. My mom sighed, shot me an unhappy glance, and tugged at my sleeve, signaling me to soften my stance.
I held back the truth because I didn't want to hurt my parents right now. Meanwhile, Wang Xu took advantage of the situation and played the good guy.
Fine, I knew that if I stayed at home any longer, my parents would soon start saying that I was in the wrong. Once they were convinced that it was my fault, how much would they be able to accept the truth when I finally revealed it?
"Alright then, Wang Xu, let's go home."
When Wang Xu heard me say we were going home, his eyes lit up with excitement as he eagerly asked, "Really? You really want to go home with me?"
I nodded and replied sullenly, "Yeah, we'll talk more at home."
Wang Xu was naturally thrilled; he scratched his head happily and turned to head for the door. Suddenly remembering something, he hurriedly said goodbye to my parents with a cheerful smile, looking particularly pleased.
As I packed my things in my room, my dad came in and quietly advised me: "Make sure to communicate well with Wang Xu when you get back. Don't get angry over small things; couples need to communicate properly."
I had no choice but to nod in agreement. When we reached the door, Wang Xu took the bag from my hand and helped me carry it while holding my hand. He waved goodbye to my parents: "Dad, Mom, we're leaving now. Zhuang Jun and I will come back to see you in a couple of days. Take care of yourselves!"
My parents stood at the entrance waving at us, and my mother still seemed a bit worried: "Zhuang Jun, remember to call home if anything happens."
Wang Xu and I walked out of the house, one smiling and the other with a dark expression. After just a few steps, I immediately shook off his hand. Wang Xu looked at me with a hint of confusion.
Not wanting to engage with him, I quickly walked toward the exit of the residential building. Many residents in this community recognized me, and if things got noisy, it would only reach my parents' ears and make them worry.
When the taxi I flagged down stopped, I reached out for my bag from Wang Xu, saying, "Give me my bag; you can go back by yourself."
Wang Xu took a step back, reluctant and pleading: "No way! Didn't we agree to go home? Come on, dear, let's go home."
"Home?" I laughed in anger. "Which home are you talking about? The one on the fifth floor or the one on the fourth?"
He knew he was in the wrong and didn’t want to dwell on that topic. Instead, he tried to avoid it by grabbing my arm to stop me from leaving: "Let's talk about it when we get back, okay? It's late, and it's not safe for you to go anywhere alone. I've been worried about you these past few days."
While Wang Xu and I were arguing, the driver's impatient voice came from the taxi: "Are you getting in or not? If you're going to make a scene, do it somewhere else; don't waste my time."
Feeling embarrassed, I let go of Wang Xu's hand and apologized: "I'm sorry, sir."
I really didn't want to affect the driver's business and thought about getting another taxi. But then Wang Xu got angry and shouted at the driver with a flushed face: "What did you say? Do you know how to speak?"
The driver was also irritable. Hearing Wang Xu's outburst, he cursed a few times in response. Wang Xu retaliated angrily, and before I knew it, they were arguing fiercely. The driver got out of his seat and rushed toward Wang Xu, starting to swing his fists at him.
I felt distressed as I watched them fight without understanding how it escalated so quickly. Seeing them tangled up together made me anxious. I rushed over to pull Wang Xu away, but my strength was too little; they only separated after exhausting themselves from fighting.
Seeing Wang Xu's bruised and swollen face, I was furious. What on earth is going on?
