This situation was already baffling, and on top of that, I hadn't slept well for the past couple of days, my head pounding. The quiet hospital entrance in the late hours was surrounded by a crowd, and I felt uneasy.
"What did you say? Are you just going to ignore your family member? Are you even human?" It seemed to be the old woman, the driver's mother, glaring at me with a face full of suspicion, as if she had seen a ghost. A group of people stood together, looking at me with accusatory eyes.
I felt like I was seeing ghosts myself; even a stranger who showed up halfway through was blaming me. It was truly a case of being dumbfounded.
"This is my family matter; you don't need to worry about it. Since he hit someone, we'll handle it as we should. If you want to call the police, go ahead."
I was also worried about this reaching my father's ears. Right now, Wang Xu was still my husband and he was my father's son-in-law. It would be embarrassing if he got into trouble with the police so soon after leaving home. My father valued his reputation and couldn't afford this kind of shame.
Unlike before, my attitude had shifted. A few people huddled together in a panic, chattering incessantly. I wanted to leave but was called back.
"Hey, don’t think we really won’t call the police. How can you be so heartless? Step aside; we’re going to talk to your husband."
The old woman, though short, had an imposing presence. After saying that, she tried to bypass me toward the Emergency Room. I anxiously grabbed her: "What are you doing? The patient needs rest. Can you please calm down? If you can't reach an agreement, whatever you want to do can wait until tomorrow."
Upon hearing this, the old woman's expression suddenly changed. While I was still holding onto her clothes, she fell to the ground with a thud. The force was so great that I stumbled sideways too. She lay on the ground and began wailing loudly: "Murder! Murder! Someone is trying to kill me! Oh heavens, help me!"
I was completely stunned and couldn't comprehend what was happening. After a moment, more than ten people surrounded me, shouting accusations and hurling insults.
The hospital security rushed over upon hearing the commotion, pushing through the crowd to ask what was going on.
With tear-filled eyes, the old woman cried out: "Murder! Murder! Someone save me!"
The security guard looked at me, then at the person next to me, who kept insisting that it was just as he said, claiming I had pushed an elderly woman to the ground and even hit her, saying how pitiful she was.
Yet no one showed any intention of helping her up.
I quickly realized that I had been framed by this group of people. Besides feeling angry and absurd, I felt more distressed. When I lowered my gaze to meet the elderly woman's eyes, she quickly averted her gaze from mine.
I sighed and reached out to help her; of course, she was unwilling and kept repeating the same lines. I finally found a moment to interrupt her.
"Ten thousand. You can either take it or call the police. If the police come for a routine check and find nothing, you won't get a single cent. Stop shouting and make your choice."
"…"
"Not choosing, huh?" I pulled out my phone from my bag and pretended to call the police. After a few seconds, I said, "Is this the police station? I want to report something."
"Wait, wait!" The elderly woman, who had been lying on the ground, suddenly got up and grabbed my hand, pleading, "Ten thousand is fine, cash, I want it now."
I nodded and put my phone away. The elderly woman stopped shouting and seemed to relax a bit. The security guard looked at us in confusion; he probably was scared enough himself and muttered a couple of things before leaving.
Perhaps due to my yielding, a triumphant smile spread across the faces of those around us. Everyone exchanged smug glances as if they had done something great.
This farce continued until four o'clock in the morning before it finally ended. When I returned to the hospital room and looked at Wang Xu's sleeping face, it felt like the first time I had resolved such an absurd situation on my own without Wang Xu.
I thought this might be a beginning; perhaps I would gradually get used to not relying on Wang Xu. Being independent wouldn't happen overnight, but slowly, I would adapt.
