After leaving the law firm, I didn't go home or to the hospital. I took a taxi to the nearest bank and waited in line. The waiting area was sparsely populated, and it took about half an hour before my number was called.
"Hello, I would like to print this year's transaction statement."
"Is it your account?"
"It's my husband's."
"Do you have his ID? Do you know the password?"
"Yes, I have it and I know it."
I handed over Wang Xu's ID and bank card from my bag. Getting the results was just a matter of time. I sat in my seat, idly watching the clock across from me, as the seconds ticked by without pause.
Through a glass partition, documents were passed back and forth, clean and new. After signing, I returned them. Thirteen minutes later, the staff member smiled politely and said, "Here you go, this is the information you requested along with your ID and bank card. Please keep them safe."
I put Wang Xu's ID and bank card back into my purse and stood up. The announcement called the next person in line to handle their business. Holding a black piece of paper in my hand, I walked step by step towards the exit. Standing at the bank door, I finally had the courage to look at the contents inside.
Aside from his salary card, all of Wang Xu's savings were in this card. The password was our wedding anniversary; he said he saved money for our home.
When I was processing his admission for observation, Wang Xu handed me his bank card. It suddenly occurred to me that this might come in handy, so I took his ID as well. I thought about divorce; it would surely be useful someday, and now it had proven to be so.
At that moment, Miao Miao called me, asking to set up a time to meet. Since I had nothing else to do right now, I decided to meet her.
I know what Miao Miao is calling me about; avoiding it isn't a solution. Wang Xu should be able to be discharged from the hospital. I called him, and he sounded quite happy. However, when I told him I wouldn't pick him up, his attitude changed.
"What’s going on? Isn’t today the weekend? Are you working overtime?"
"No, I'm meeting Miao Miao."
"What? You're still meeting her? Zhuang Jun, do you not believe me? Do you really trust another woman more than your husband?" Wang Xu spoke hurriedly, and I gave him enough time to express himself.
It wasn't until I got into the taxi that he paused and asked, "Are you still listening, dear?"
"Yes, I'm listening."
"That's good enough. Come pick me up; it's inconvenient for a patient like me to leave alone. Bring some things for me, and we can go out for dinner tonight."
Wang Xu was quite open about it, but I couldn't match even a fraction of his confidence. Perhaps he believes that persistence leads to new beginnings, while I think separation is the answer.
"No thanks, I have plans with Miao Miao. When you're discharged, just pick up some external medicine. The doctor said there shouldn't be any issues after the observation period. Just go home directly; I’ll hang up now."
As I was ending the call, Wang Xu's voice came through the receiver again, but I pressed the end button and looked out the window, waiting to meet Miao Miao.
A few minutes later, I arrived at the place we agreed upon and entered the reserved booth. This time it was just Miao Miao and me.
Some things should be clarified now, but I still couldn't help but wait for Miao Miao to speak first before saying anything myself.
"I have already decided to get a divorce."
I placed the document on the table and pushed it toward Miao Miao.
"It may require legal procedures, going to court. I have consulted a lawyer, and as long as there is evidence, it should be fine."
Miao Miao's gaze fell on the materials I handed over, then she raised her eyes to look at me, her expression inscrutable.
