"Anyway, you should meet your mother-in-law soon," Miao Miao sighed and continued, "When they keep in touch with Deng Xiaomei, we might be able to dig up new evidence. It wouldn't be a bad thing for your mother-in-law to experience the exhausting pain of knowing the truth."
Miao Miao was right; this seemed to be my only way out. However, it involved setting a trap for my own mother-in-law and husband. It was hard to bear, but the role reversal was too sudden for me to fully accept.
In the photo, Deng Xiaomei smiled brightly. Every time I looked at it, it felt like a dagger stabbing my heart, leaving a huge wound that bled my blood and tears.
"What about her?"
I rubbed my finger over the photo, tracing the warmth left behind and my heart full of anger.
Miao Miao glanced at the photo, her tone lighter than I expected.
"With this evidence, it's not difficult. Deng Xiaomei can die in various ways. Right now, you're not the lamb waiting to be slaughtered; she is."
"What should I do?"
"Look, Deng Xiaomei has already made two mistakes. Huang Zhang and Song Qi are both married. You're not the only one waiting to deal with her. Think about it: three women against one shameless person—how easy could that be?"
Miao Miao placed her hand on mine, holding it tightly as she repeatedly reminded me, "Just a few days. First meet your mother-in-law, then send the photos to Huang Zhang and Song Qi's wives. At that point, we can deal with this vixen together."
I finally raised my eyes and looked at Miao Miao in confusion, suddenly noticing the fatigue flashing in her eyes. She had been running around for my sake for so long; it must have been exhausting for her.
Whether or not she was doing this as Wang Xu said—to harm me—what I wanted most right now wasn't to argue about Miao Miao's intentions but to divorce Wang Xu and make Deng Xiaomei taste the bitter fruit of her actions.
"Thank you, Miao Miao."
I sincerely thanked her at this moment. If it weren't for her help, I might still be at a loss, unable to escape or stop crying.
Miao Miao forced a smile. "As long as you're okay. I'm leaving now. I'll gather all the information on that shameless woman's two lovers and email it to you. You need to think about how to talk to your mother-in-law first; don't let her turn the tables on you."
She patiently reminded me of many things. That afternoon, she seemed to be fulfilling a promise, covering every aspect she could think of. When I had a weakness, Miao Miao became my armor.
By four-thirty, I realized I was running out of time and told her I needed to pick up Lu Shuang from elementary school; I had to leave now to avoid being late.
Upon hearing that I was picking up Lu Shuang, Miao Miao was surprised. "How did you start helping Lu Ming pick up the child?"
"It was just a coincidence." I briefly explained the situation to Miao Miao and hurriedly started packing up my things, intending to leave. As I was saying goodbye, Miao Miao called out to me.
"Zhuang Jun, Lu Ming is indeed a good person, and Lu Shuang is well-behaved; she won't cause you any trouble. You are helping Lu Ming out, and he won't treat you poorly. Although he seems hard to approach, one shouldn't be deceived by appearances, right?"
"Yeah, I'll think about it." I could only consider Miao Miao's suggestion further.
I arrived at the elementary school just as classes were letting out. I got out of the taxi and jogged to the entrance, avoiding other parents picking up their children and any idle chatter. After picking up Lu Shuang, Lu Ming asked me to take her directly to a neighborhood.
I thought it was Lu Ming's home address, but Lu Shuang shook her head.
"Is it not?"
It wasn't until we arrived that I realized it was a Private Kitchen, where Lu Ming was already waiting and waved at us.
Perhaps having seriously considered my words, Lu Ming seemed more focused on Lu Shuang's health.
"Let's give it a try; this place has pretty good food," Lu Ming said to me.
"Okay."
The dishes served were all home-cooked meals. After eating, they were indeed refreshing and tasty, with rich layers of flavor. After the meal, they even served three bowls of soup. I picked out the quail eggs from inside and placed them in Lu Shuang's bowl.
When I unintentionally looked up, I found Lu Ming watching me. I awkwardly explained.
"Lu Shuang is growing, so it's good for her to eat this."
Lu Ming didn't say anything in response, and I sighed in relief, fearing that he might think I was being overly sentimental.
After finishing the meal, Lu Ming said he wanted to take Lu Shuang for a walk in the park downstairs and invited me to join them. I didn't refuse.
Halfway through the walk, Lu Shuang seemed a bit tired. Lu Ming picked her up and let her rest her head on his shoulder while whispering a few words in her ear.
"Did something happen?"
Lu Ming suddenly asked me, startling me. I thought I had been discreet enough; I smiled when necessary, and everything—whether sleeping or eating—went on as usual without a hitch.
The embarrassment of being seen through left me at a loss for words, unsure of how to respond or where to begin.
"Well, I'm getting a divorce, but I'm facing some difficulties. It seems like it's not going to be easy."
"I know a lawyer who specializes in this area. I'll arrange a meeting for you tomorrow."
I waved my hand in surprise, "No, that's too much trouble. It's my husband who cheated, and now I have no evidence. He doesn't agree to the divorce, which is why I'm stuck. It's not about anything else."
Lu Ming glanced at me sideways. I usually don't air my dirty laundry, but when I learned that Lu Ming had also been divorced, I felt a sense of shared understanding.
Like a flood breaking its banks, I couldn't hold back any longer and continued speaking.
"Miao Miao has helped me a lot during this time. She's worried that I won't have anyone to rely on afterward and wants to help me find a job. I initially wanted to refuse, but she said she would only feel at ease if she went to work with you. So all along, it's been her helping me. I'm also sorry for the trouble I've caused you before."
Lu Ming nodded slightly. Regarding Miao Miao, he shared my opinion: "She hasn't been around Wang Nan for long, but it's clear she's someone who lives life earnestly. She's emotional and impulsive, but she should be someone you can rely on."
He didn't bring up my apology again, but it was evident that he held Miao Miao in high regard. If he wasn't deliberately deceiving me, how could someone as perceptive as Lu Ming fail to see what kind of person Miao Miao is?
