Lu Ming made me feel quite awkward with his words. He scrutinized my actions as if it were our first meeting, but it didn’t feel oppressive; it was just an embarrassing situation.
I wanted to say it was nothing, but would Lu Ming believe me?
"My husband has been cheating for over six months. The mistress is pregnant, and my husband even bought her a house. Although he promised me a fresh start, it doesn’t seem that way. I want a divorce now, but he has erased all the evidence. I don’t know what to do."
The dramatic turn of events in my life these days has been unbearable. It has become clear to me that living alone means playing too many roles. I have ruined one, yet there are others I must maintain.
"Are you reluctant?"
I shook my head. "I used to be very reluctant. I wanted to pretend I didn’t know anything, thinking we could live together as a couple and solve problems together. I never expected my husband wouldn’t consider me at all, which makes me really sad."
What saddens me the most is that Wang Xu never thought about me. Even when discussing these matters, I couldn’t let go of the countless emotions swirling inside me. Compromising time and again hasn’t earned me genuine care; what’s left to cling to?
"If you need help, just say so."
"No, thank you." I sighed. "Miao Miao has helped me a lot. This is the result of my choices, and now that I've come this far, I want to handle it myself. Thank you for worrying about me."
"As long as you're okay, let’s go."
Lu Ming didn’t offer any comforting words; after asking about my situation, he simply inquired if I needed help since he knows many people. Perhaps with Lu Ming’s assistance, things would improve significantly.
But I said that since this is what I want, the matter of divorce only concerns Wang Xu and me; it wouldn’t be fair to involve anyone else.
The next morning, upon waking up and recalling my promise to Wang Xu, I quickly tidied myself up, grabbed my bag, and went downstairs. I took a car back to a familiar place that now felt strangely unfamiliar.
The security guard at the entrance greeted me warmly, "Mrs. Wang."
I smiled and nodded at him before heading home. However, when I opened the door and stepped inside, I was surprised to see someone in the living room.
"What are you doing..." I stared in shock at Wang Xu, who stood up with a smile and walked toward me, extending his hand. I instinctively took a step back, but Wang Xu seemed unbothered and pulled my hand, bringing me back in front of him.
"I really missed you, my wife. I heard you were coming home today, so I specially took a day off to spend time with you. I've been too busy lately and neglected your feelings, but it won't happen again, I promise." Wang Xu's tone was earnest, and his sweet gestures were just like before.
Yet, I felt something had changed. As Wang Xu held me tightly in his embrace, I glanced around and couldn't help but ask him, "Where's my mother-in-law? Is she not here?"
Wang Xu didn't respond immediately. In those one or two seconds of silence, I could clearly hear the ticking of the clock on the wall. The stillness of that moment felt subtly strange.
"Mom went out to buy groceries. She heard you were coming back and specifically went to get some good food for you."
Wang Xu and I embraced intimately, resting our heads on each other's shoulders. We couldn't see each other's expressions or discern any emotions; we just talked to ourselves.
Every word in his statement struck me as absurd. If my mother-in-law had ever thought about me like that, perhaps I could still be a naive dumpling for her and her son to bully in various ways.
My mother-in-law would never go out of her way to prepare food for me.
Wang Xu was lying. Why was he lying? Was it to ease the conflict between me and my mother-in-law or had he heard something from her?
The mere thought of this possibility frightened me.
Wang Xu and I had reached a point of mutual suspicion, scrutinizing each other's every move with a magnifying glass, devoid of any emotion.
After the embrace ended, I noticed that Wang Xu's expression remained natural. He took my hand and led me to the sofa, asking about my well-being with genuine concern.
I responded to each of his questions perfunctorily, calculating how to leave this place. Wang Xu seemed prepared; he must have known I would say to go to the security room.
The more he spoke, the more impatient I became. I pulled out Wang Xu's ID from my bag and handed it to him, saying, "You should hold onto your ID for now; don't forget it when I leave."
Wang Xu's face fell as he didn't take the ID from me, so I placed it on the coffee table.
He complained slightly, "Are you leaving again? Don't you plan to stay in this home?"
I almost couldn't suppress a cold laugh. Was it me who didn't plan to stay in this home, or was it the good deeds done by him and his mother? Everyone knew the truth, yet everything was being blamed on me now.
"I've said it before; I've been very busy with work these past few days. I could only come today because I adjusted my schedule. The company landed a big contract, and I can't return."
"I understand you're busy during the day, but why don't you stay at home at night? A hotel? Do you stay in hotels every day?" Wang Xu pressed me aggressively, his face devoid of any smile.
I sighed deeply. "By the time I finish work, there are no subways or buses left. Taxis are also quite unsafe, so I just stay nearby. It's nice to be able to sleep in a bit longer in the morning."
"That's not acceptable," Wang Xu said firmly. "You must come back and stay here. We just got married, and now we're living apart. Wife, can't you feel sorry for me?"
He frowned with an urgent look in his eyes as he placed his hand on my thigh, slowly moving it upward. Just as his hand reached near my thigh's root, I pressed down on it. Looking into his eyes, I saw a hint of desire.
Suddenly, he leaned closer and began kissing my earlobe while softly coaxing me, "Wife, I really miss you. Wife, touch me."
He eagerly pulled my hand down toward his lower body while his lips lingered near my ear. After three years together, he knew everything about me—my sensitive spots, my vulnerabilities—and how to control my emotions.
I was eager to pull my hand back, but his strength was overwhelming as he pressed his entire body against me. I was forced to lie back on the sofa while he held my chin tightly and kissed me.
It felt more like a release than an intimate moment. I whimpered and tried to push him away, but the look in his bloodshot eyes resembled that of a starving beast, determined not to let its meal escape.
We struggled for a long time, and he had nearly stripped off my top. Seizing a moment of opportunity, I pushed him away, feeling utterly disheveled.
"Enough, Wang Xu. I don't want to do this right now; don't force me."
He glared at me with his crimson eyes, breathing heavily in displeasure at my resistance before finally saying, "What's wrong with couples doing this? Forcing? You think I'm forcing you?"
I snorted coldly, slowly putting my shirt back on and buttoning it up. "This counts as marital rape."
Wang Xu clearly refused to accept that and turned his gaze away. I stood up to leave, but he followed me, grabbing my arm to stop me. "Where do you think you're going? I won't touch you."
I forcefully pried his hand off mine. "I said I have work to do. I'm just here to give you something and then I'm leaving. We can talk about anything else later when I'm free. I'm going now."
Anxiously, I left the house. Wang Xu didn't try to keep me from going, but that only made me more nervous. It felt like his presence lingered around me, but it wasn't the comforting familiarity I once cherished.
Wang Xu was definitely testing me.
I hurried away, feeling as if my former home had turned into a den of despair—how pitiful.
A few days later, I rummaged through my bag and found Wang Xu's bank card. It reminded me that when he asked me to change my ID earlier, he hadn't mentioned the card. I hadn't thought about returning it to him. Looking at the few hundred dollars left in my wallet, I decided to withdraw some more cash for backup.
Having already withdrawn ten thousand in cash, there wasn't much left after buying various things. My salary from Lu Ming's side hadn't been paid yet since I hadn't completed a full month of work, and I felt embarrassed to ask for it directly. So, taking Wang Xu's card with me, I went downstairs to find a nearby bank to withdraw some cash.
I was waiting in line at the ATM, with a couple of people ahead of me. After a few minutes, it was my turn. I skillfully inserted my card and was about to enter my password when the process was interrupted.
The ATM displayed "Invalid Bank Card" and then swallowed my card! Startled, I called over a bank employee. After providing the card number and related information, the staff member checked and told me directly.
"Sorry, miss, this card has been reported lost."
"What? Reported lost?"
"Yes, this card has been reported lost."
Seeing my pale face, the bank teller glanced at me twice before lowering their head. I stood in the lobby feeling exceptionally distressed; this was Wang Xu's bank card, and the only person who could have reported it lost was him!
He clearly knew that I had the card but chose to report it lost instead. He was undoubtedly cutting off my escape route!
After the unpleasant incident yesterday, today the defendant learned this news, and my confusion and helplessness surged again.
Wang Xu did this on purpose.
I can only be certain of that now; what he knows or doesn't know is a blank to me.
If he is also preparing while I am planning my revenge, his chances of success might far exceed mine.
I need to act faster than him, but right now I have no more than a thousand yuan on me. I have too many places where I will need money later, and after feeling confident, I've hit a dead end.
I'm almost going crazy.
Feeling terrible, I walked out of the bank just as Lu Ming's call came in. I weakly answered, listening to him talk about his business trip and asking me to take care of Lu Shuang for three days. It was something I was supposed to do anyway, so I agreed without hesitation. However, Lu Ming then asked,
"Are you in trouble?"
After he asked, I didn't respond immediately.
At a time when I was most short on money, a benefactor asked if I was in trouble. He had told me before that I could reach out if I needed anything.
Now that I actually needed help, I couldn't bring myself to speak up.
"No, you go ahead and focus on your work. Call me when you get back."
"Okay."
Having turned down Lu Ming's offer, I still didn't know what to do. All I could do was suppress my emotions and go pick up Lu Shuang.
