"Wang Xu," he said everything, and my surging emotions suddenly calmed down.
Perhaps I had waited too long for him to speak frankly. By the time I slowly let go of my expectations, I still had not heard a sincere word from Wang Xu.
The pain of waiting was akin to my past longing for Wang Xu to change his mind, much like my mother-in-law waiting for my unrequested consent to divorce.
"Wang Xu, touch my hand."
"What's wrong? Is it a bit cold? Are you uncomfortable?" He showed a hint of nervousness.
I shook my head.
"I have been a good wife in the Wang Family for three years. One day you will forget, and your mother will forget, but my hand remembers."
After getting married and before resigning, I gradually transformed from the little darling of my family into the virtuous daughter-in-law of the Wang Family. Not every action was perfect, but 90% of what I did was for the sake of the Wang Family.
The prosperity of the Wang Family brought me joy, and their happiness was what I hoped for. I rarely considered the changes that were gradually happening to me. My hands became rough from labor, something I once thought trivial and never paid attention to. Now, I no longer wanted to tie my joys and sorrows to Wang Xu; I wanted to live my own life as Zhuang Jun, while the benefits the Wang Family left me were nearly zero.
"I remember, dear. I really remember everything about you. I remember how hard you worked for this family. You've suffered for too long. Whatever you want, I'll agree to it."
Wang Xu held my hand, his face filled with concern, but the warmth from his hand felt unreal.
"Then fine. Let me have that apartment under Deng Xiaomei's name back. Are you willing?"
As soon as I finished speaking, Wang Xu's expression turned exceptionally grim. He lowered his gaze and then looked at me a few times, hesitatingly stammering, "Dear, about this issue…"
His voice grew quieter. I waited in silence but did not hear what he would say next.
"I have no other demands; that apartment must be returned."
Even if the entire value of that apartment was earned solely through Wang Xu's efforts, he was still maintaining our marital relationship. His act of giving it to another woman was utterly wrong.
"In your eyes, is our relationship not as important as a house? If we continue to work hard, I can give you whatever you want."
"Wang Xu, do you think I just want that house?"
"Isn't that so? Don't you really want it? Are you just saying this to test me?" Wang Xu's excitement was tinged with a hint of expectation.
I shook my head, sighing inwardly.
"Wang Xu, you might think that wanting the house is my greed, but the greedy one is you." I felt a pang of sadness. Before facing various conflicts with Wang Xu, I had little opportunity to understand him deeply. During times without major disagreements, we treated each other with respect and courtesy. But now, once the divorce was brought up and our feelings began to crack, why had Wang Xu changed overnight?
Was it my carelessness or my self-deception in not believing he could be this way?
I sighed again. "You think that after your infidelity, I would forgive you and that past mistakes shouldn't be held against you. But why don't you consider how deeply I've been hurt by the house downstairs? It serves as proof of your betrayal. When you were thinking about yourself, did you ever think about how I would face this? During the time we still had a marriage contract, your past with another woman kept hurting me over and over!"
"I know, I know." Wang Xu's face twisted in pain. "I know you're still very upset, but I will prove my determination to love you. We will be happy together, even happier than before. That's all in the past; you promised to forgive me, didn't you? Why have you been avoiding me lately? You promised we would start over."
"Start over? Starting over means you canceling my bank card? Leaving me to fend for myself?"
Thinking back to when I learned from the bank teller that my card had been canceled and being looked at like a thief was humiliating. In that moment, I wished I could ask Wang Xu directly where his professed sincerity had gone.
"You misunderstood; you've got it all wrong! I was scared, dear. I was afraid you'd really never give me another chance and would leave me for good. I had no choice but to think of this way to make you come back to me. I know you're not someone who likes to trouble your parents, so you'd only come back to find me for another chance, right?"
So that's it. If I hadn't heard him say it out loud, I would still be wondering what Wang Xu was trying to do. He clearly understood me well enough to know that I didn't want things to escalate and that I'd think of him first when I ran out of money.
"So you're using your understanding of me to hurt me; is that what you're saying?"
"Of course not! Zhuang Jun, how could you think that!? I just wanted you to come back to me on your own. Before, no matter how much I begged you to return, it didn't matter to you. I didn't know where you were or how to find you or win you back; this was all I could think of. I'm not trying to cut off your options or anything; if you promise to come back to me, I'll give you all my cards and everything else. Is that okay?" He pleaded while holding my hand and kissing it near his lips, his gaze fixed on me.
Desperate and earnest.
"I want that house belonging to Deng Xiaomei. Are you going to give it to me?"
This question left Wang Xu speechless.
Fine, I already know the answer.
"Just leave. This marriage has to end anyway. You’re desperately trying to hide Deng Xiaomei, aren’t you just trying to take less from me when we split? But Wang Xu, if you want to keep it a secret, then keep it tight. Don’t let me catch you off guard; otherwise, some things will come back to bite you legally." I glared at him fiercely and stepped out of the room first.
This is my home; there’s no way Wang Xu could just stay in the room alone. Now that my parents basically know the truth, it’s not a place anyone would welcome him, and he knows he has to leave.
I found my dad in the study, facing away from me as he looked at his flowers. I approached and called out softly. He turned around and comforted me, "Zhuang Jun, don’t feel sorry for us. You did nothing wrong in this matter. Don’t take all the responsibility on yourself. As parents, our intentions are only for our child. Don’t blame yourself too much; think more about yourself, okay?"
"Mm." Hearing my dad say this made my heart ache. I was afraid they would overthink things and didn’t dare to tell them at first. Who knew it would still worry them? They ended up comforting me instead.
After chatting with my dad for a while, I came out of the study. My mom had returned and was washing vegetables in the kitchen. When she glanced at me, she pointed towards my room. I looked over helplessly; could it be that Wang Xu hadn’t left yet?
I gave him time to leave on his own. Since he wasn’t willing to go, I had to make things clearer.
When I returned to my room, he was still standing by the desk, his face darkened as if he were sulking.
What’s there for him to be angry about?!
"Why are you still here?"
"I’m leaving? Then you need to explain what you meant by work. What exactly are you busy with every day?" He arrogantly handed my phone back to me with a cold snort.
I took the phone, my eyelids twitching as I suppressed my anxiety and reassured myself that it was fine. After what happened with Lu Ming, I had deleted everything thoroughly, so Wang Xu couldn’t possibly find anything useful against me.
"What do you mean by that?"
Wang Xu pointed at the phone and coldly said, "A woman named Dong Lu called you, asking you to go to the company to verify your salary card and other information. She said you are not an assistant anymore; you are just taking care of the kids for your Boss!"
"So what?" Is this really Wang Xu's reason for changing his attitude? I couldn't believe that this was more infuriating than Wang Xu hiding his affair with another woman from me!
"What do you mean, so what? Do you still dare to say that you were busy because of a business trip? You didn't go on any business trip at all! How can taking care of a child be considered a business trip? You're not busy at all! Yet every time I ask you to come home, you say you're working overtime or on a business trip! You're just lying to me!" Wang Xu looked at me with anger, pacing around the room.
Faced with Wang Xu's fury, I felt terrible and confused. "Do you really not understand why I feel this way? If you hadn't cheated first, would I feel annoyed every time I see you? Do you think I want to go home and face you, looking at your lying face? I can't do it!"
Suddenly, Wang Xu angrily lifted a chair beside him, causing it to crash against the wall with a deafening sound. He no longer kept his voice down and shouted at me, "I don't see how you're any better! Are you annoyed with me or with someone else that you went to pick up kids for? Big Boss, Big Boss can't find anyone else to take care of the kids and calls you instead? What is your relationship with them? How can you even say anything about me? Where did you go on your business trip, who were you with—was it with Big Boss?"
Wang Xu's attitude of turning the tables on me made me furious!
"You really have the nerve to accuse me! Get out of here!"
"Fine, I'll leave. I'm leaving right now, but don't think I'll agree to a divorce unless I'm dead!"
Wang Xu left my room in anger, and the loud bang of the door echoed behind him. Wang Xu really left and declared that he would never agree to a divorce. I didn't know if he meant it or if it was just a statement made in anger.
